Limestone County tornado victims receive help from recovery committee
LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- There are several families in east Limestone County who had their homes damaged or destroyed by last Friday's storms?that didn't have any insurance. They will be getting help from the federal government. The county's Long Term Recovery Committee is working to find out what their needs are and what can be done.?
Patty Goar and her family lost three mobile homes along Nick Davis Road. Friends, the American Red Cross and others have donated clothes, food and toys for her eight-year-old son.
Her family is one of nine active Limestone County cases the Athens-Limestone County United Way is working with. The Long Term Recovery Committee is made up of non-profit organizations, government officials and local businesses who work to combine resources.
"If there's a case where they're needing maybe some repairs, it might be that one or two groups will be purchasing materials, and another couple of groups will be providing the volunteer labor," said Kaye Young McFarlen, United Way Director.
McFarlen said planning is in the early stages. The United Way will have volunteers out this weekend moving debris to the side of the road. But for tornado victims who cannot afford a contractor to haul that debris away there they are going to have to move it themselves.
"Nobody is going to help. The county is not going to help,"?said Goar.?"It's hard. I mean once you look at it, it's your home. I mean, it's hard. It's very emotional."
McFarlen said the committee is looking for help from local businesses to remove construction debris.
"Working with organizations and business that have dumpsters; volunteers can help families clean up the debris and put into the dumpsters. We're working hard on it, but we just don't have a clear, definitive answer yet," he said.
The United Way needs volunteers for manual labor, people have equipment like chainsaws, and will take disaster relief fund donations that go directly to local families. For information on how to help, call (256) 233-2323.
