Print Your Own Labware, Catalysts Included

3d printers civilian forfeiture seized as drug lab paraphernalia in 3... 2... 1...

It is an interesting economic problem as it costs way more than glass, but is "optimized". Not sure when it would economically pay off.

Recently I was making fun of chemistry glass taper standards on/., because just like in CS / IT there are so many conflicting standards that won't interoperate. Its almost as bad as screw threads. Printing a "optimized" 127 ml beaker with built in electrodes instead of taking a generic pyrex 125 ml off the shelf and sticking some off the shelf electrodes into it, seems a complete waste of expensive and slow 3-d printing resources, but writing a "magic" python script (or whatever) that could squirt out a 3-d file to adapt any ground glass taper to any other ground glass taper would be pretty handy.

Aren't the clamps for ground glass called "keck clips" or something like that? I'm talking about the little plastic clamps that hold ground glass joints together so they don't fall apart while working. I believe that product came out in the mid 80s a bit too late for my lab time in the early 90s. A fellow o-chem student had a nice small lab fire due to the lab not having those new-fangled keck clips available (no injury or property damage, thankfully). I think there is a realistic safety advantage by being able to print up the exact safety gear you need, whenever you need it. That might be another valid chem lab market. Not having the proper clamps and such is no excuse if you can just print another.

I also think it would be fun to 3-d print microscale apparatus, because at least its small and cheap and fast. Didn't read the article, maybe thats the scale they're talking about.

Peter Thiel?s Breakout Labs Awards $350K Each To 6 Ambitious Biotech Startups

Screen Shot 2012-04-17 at 4.54.11 AMWhile most of us are still reeling in shock after last week's one billion Instagram buy, Peter Thiel -- through both Founders Fund and the Thiel Foundation -- is almost single-handedly leading the charge into a future where humans don't age or suffer from cancer, among other things. Call it crazy or whatever you'd like, but there's no doubt that people who are trying to drastically change the world for the better often do. If a hologram can give a concert, it's not that far-fetched to imagine a future where humans don't die. As part of its commitment to improving the quality of human life in general, Thiel's latest project, Breakout Labs, is awarding $5 million to companies who push the envelope with regards to "revolutionary" scientific innovation.

High Blood Pressure Home Remedies | Health and Fitness

Are you looking for the most effective high blood pressure home remedies? You?re in luck today because this article contains the best food alternatives that you can make use of. Consider these four food options listed below to help you fight the damaging effects of hypertension.

4 Natural Remedies for High Blood Pressure

1. Fruits and Vegetables

These two basic foods are probably the most accessible ones. They can often be found in the comfort of your own homes, so there?s no need to hassle yourself with getting them. Foods that contain high levels of potassium and fiber are proven to lower blood pressure rates, that?s why they are highly recommended by physicians. Below are some good examples:

? Foods rich in potassium: avocados, baked potatoes, bananas, beets, brussel sprouts, cantaloupes, dates, dried apricots, dried prunes, dry roasted peanuts, figs, fresh pears, kiwis, lima beans, melons, nectarine, orange juice, oranges, prune juice, raisins, spinach, tomatoes, unsalted peanuts, and winter squash.

? Foods rich in fiber: almonds, apples, artichokes, black beans, breads, broccolis, brown rice, carrots, corn brans, lentils, oat bran muffins, oatmeals, peas, pecans, pistachio nuts, popcorn, raspberries, strawberries, sunflower seed kernels, sweet corns, turnip greens, and whole grains.

The fruits and veggies listed above are all great remedies that can fight away hypertension. You don?t have to consume each and every one of them though, but do so whenever you can because they?re really good for your health. Don?t forget to take precaution as well in case you?re allergic to some of them. If you?re unsure what exactly to consume, then seek your doctor?s advice.

2. Food Seasonings

Did you know that food seasonings and spices can do more than just add flavors to your meals? Often times we don?t realize that the typical food enhancers we consume are very beneficial. Common spices like garlic, ginger and onions actually have health advantages that can lower your blood pressure. You can either eat them raw or add them as flavoring to your meals. Other spices that are good for hypertensive people are black pepper, cayenne pepper, chives, curry powder, and oregano.

3. Dairy Products

Calcium-rich foods are also highly recommended in order to fight the consequences of high blood pressure. Milk and other dairy goods are generally beneficial to your health, but the most notable products you should consume are skim milk and low-fat yogurt. These two products show great potential in reducing the effects of hypertension, so be sure to include them in your high blood pressure home remedies.

4. Herbal Tea

Finally, another remedy that you can greatly benefit from is drinking herbal tea every day. Oolong, hibiscus, and green tea are the three major types that are known to control the effects of hypertension on the body. Studies show that even a single cup of herbal tea can reduce the risk of high blood pressure by over 50%, that?s why more and more people are adopting this remedy today because it?s effective. If you want to experience these health benefits yourself, make sure you consume at least one cup of tea daily.

So those are the four basic food solutions for hypertension. Now that you?re aware of the foods that are good for you, see to it that you add them in your dietary plans. With regular consumption of these amazing high blood pressure home remedies, you should be able to control the consequences of hypertension in no time.

Kindergartner handcuffed by cops after tantrum

By Miguel Llanos, msnbc.com

The?family of a 6-year-old Georgia girl?is upset at police and school officials after the girl was handcuffed and taken to a police station for allegedly throwing furniture, tearing items off the walls and knocking over a shelf, which injured the principal.

"A 6-year-old in kindergarten?" Earnest Johnson, the father of Salecia Johson, asked with disbelief. "They have no?business calling the police and?handcuffing?my child," he told WMAZ-TV.

Police defended their actions during the incident which occurred last Friday at Creekside Elementary School in Milledgeville, Ga.

"Our policy?states that any detainee transported to our station in a patrol vehicle is to be handcuffed in the back. There is no age discrimination on that rule,"?Milledgeville Police Chief Dray Swicord told WMAZ-TV.

The family on Tuesday demanded that the city change its policy, the Associated Press reported, and claimed the girl was shaken up by being put in a holding cell.

The police officer called to the scene later wrote that he "noticed damage to school property and possible assault of other students and staff. I made six attempts to contact her mother via telephone."

"I attempted to calm Johnson down," he?wrote in his incident report. "Johnson then pulled away and began actively resisting and fighting with me."

The principal, Dianne Popp,?said "a small shelf struck her in the leg while Johnson was throwing items at her," according to the police report, and that the girl "tried several times to get out of the office. Johnson was observed biting the door knob of the office and jumping on the paper shredder and attempted to break a glass frame above the shredder."

Johnson was charged with assault and damage to property, WMAZ-TV reported, but she will not have to go to court because of her age.

Johnson's mother, Constance Ruff, says her daughter was suspended until the start of the next school year.??

"She has mood swings some days, which all of us have mood swings some days," she told WMAZ-TV. "I guess that was just one of her bad days."

Asked by msnbc.com if the suspension means the?girl will be held back a year, a school official had "no comment"?and said the principal would have to respond to that but was not immediately available due to school testing.

Johnson's aunt, Candace Ruff, said the girl "might have misbehaved,?but I don't think she actually misbehaved to the point?that she should have been handcuffed and taken downtown to the police department."

"Call the police? Is that the first step? Or is there any other kind of intervention that can be taken to help that child," she asked.

Ruff?added that the girl was by herself in a holding cell and complained about the handcuffs when she and her sister went to get her.

"She said they were really tight. She said they really hurt her wrists," Ruff told the Associated Press. "She was so shaken up when we went there to pick her up."

This isn't the first time we've seen schoolchildren handcuffed by police. In Colorado last month, a 6th grader was handcuffed and taken to a juvenile holding facility for disobeying an assistant principal and being "argumentative and extremely rude," according to the police report.

Russia protests are overblown by West. Putin is here to stay.

Mesmerized by Moscow protests, Western observers predict President-elect Vladimir Putin?s demise. But the politically active middle class is small and limited. US policy must be based on a realistic analysis of Putin?s support, not unfounded assessments that he's on his last legs.

A fairy tale is enchanting the West ? the end of the Putin era. Scarcely a day goes by without some Western observer or pundit announcing the demise of Russian President-elect Vladimir Putin. The mass protests in Moscow and other large cities since the parliamentary elections in early December are portrayed as signaling ?the beginning of the end of Putin era.? Some observers predict that Putin will be unable to serve his full six-year term.

However, these assessments are based more on wishful thinking ? and groupthink ? than on hard facts. The protests represent the emergence in Russia of a bold and politically active middle class that is fed up with the growing corruption and constraints on basic political rights under Mr. Putin and his successor, current President Dmitri Medvedev.

Yet one should not exaggerate the political influence of this middle class. While highly active and vocal, it is relatively small and limited to Moscow and a few other large Russian cities. Outside these cities, support for Putin is much stronger and more widespread. Voters in these areas are far from satisfied with conditions. But they fear political change could bring a return to the chaos and instability of the Yeltsin years. For them, Putin represents stability and a barricade against things getting worse.

This factor is overlooked by many Western pundits and analysts. Mesmerized by the protests in Moscow, many analysts predicted that Putin would not receive 50 percent of the votes in the first round and would be forced into a second round run-off. However, Putin won 64 percent of the vote in the first round ? significantly less than the support he received in the presidential elections in his first two terms, but a respectable victory nonetheless.

This is not to suggest that Putin is a born-again democrat or that Washington should overlook the seedy aspects of his rule. But if US policy is to be successful, it must be based on a realistic analysis of Putin?s support and the political balance of forces in Russia. It cannot be based on unfounded assessments that Putin is on his last legs and likely be forced into early retirement, as some Western observers have suggested.

To be sure, Putin faces a very different Russia than one he ruled 12 years ago. During his first tenure as president, he benefited from high oil prices that provided an economic cushion and allowed Russia to recover economically much more quickly than many observers expected. The improvement in the economy was the main reason for Putin?s high approval ratings during his first two terms as president.

Materialistic Evolutionists Are Missing Out On Mighty Self-Improvement

Materialistic evolutionists are missing out on some of the most effective self-improvement methods in existence.? Why?? Because they have chosen to categorically eliminate the entire area of spirituality from their life and from their consideration.

Materialistic evolutionists are people who have chosen to believe that the Universe, the stars and planets, and all the life forms on Earth, came into being by an unaided process of evolution ? that nothing exists but physical reality.

By choosing this belief system, they cut themselves off from the amazing wealth of spiritual knowledge and experience that the human race has accumulated.

For example, materialistic evolutionists can?t experience the hope of prayer, because they believe that there is no one to pray to.?? They can?t experience the inner peace that comes from God?s ?still, small voice,? because in their faith-system, there is no God to speak.

Materialistic evolutionists are unable to receive the powerful, personal transformation that comes through surrender to the Higher Power, that Alcoholics Anonymous has used to help millions of people get free from various habits and addictions.

They can?t experience the ecstasy of spiritual experience that has been enjoyed by untold millions of people around the globe.? And they can?t experience the wonderful cleansing and freedom from guilt that comes from God?s forgiveness.

I?ve often wondered why anyone would voluntary want to forgo the spiritual methodologies that have lifted humanity to the highest heights.? I think many people confuse spiritual reality with religious manipulation and throw them both out together.? Sad.

Spiritual reality operates independently of organized religion.? The truth is:? both religion and materialistic evolution shut down genuine spirituality.

Is your belief system shutting you off from the life-transforming power of God?? If so, are you okay with missing out on life?s most glorious reality?

Netflix?s Reed Hastings Chastises Comcast Over Net Neutrality And Its Shady Xfinity App

netflix-reed-hastingsIn the latest battle in the war for living room domination, Netflix's CEO Reed Hastings took to his public Facebook account and called out Comcast's latest attack on Net Neutrality. As he explains, Comcast's just-launched Xbox 360 Xfinity app does not count against the provider's ISP data caps. However, if the same exact program is viewed through Hulu, HBO GO and, yes, Netflix, it deducts the data used against the subscribers' monthly allotment. Yeah, as Hastings points out, the policy is not very neutral.
