Galaxy S III teased on Samsung Denmark Facebook page

Samsung teaser

By now we've heard plenty of rumored details, though nothing confirmed, about what Samsung's going to be showing off on May 3 in London. And today the plot thickens somewhat with the unveiling of a new teaser image on an official Facebook page. The manufacturer's uploaded the image you see above to its Danish Facebook gallery, showing the date and time (in Denmark) of the Galaxy S III new Galaxy launch event. Over on the right is the unmistakable outline of a curved smartphone, similar to the Galaxy Nexus. The profile of the device is different to what we've seen in recent leaked images, suggesting those units may indeed have been Galaxy S III hardware in generic dummy cases, as has been reported.

No clues as to what, if anything, that plus sigh is all about. But if you have any wild theories, be sure to shout out in the comments.

It's coming, folks. And we've no doubt the next couple of weeks will be packed with more rumors and speculation (and maybe a fresh leak or two), as we await Samsung's next big thing. Keep watching AC for all the latest.

Kogeto Dot

Many cameras and smartphones are capable of capturing stunning panoramic photos, with their wide field of views and expansive scenes, but few, if any, can claim to capture panoramic videos. The Kogeto Dot ($79 direct) is a truly unique gadget that turns your iPhone 4 or 4S into a 360-degree panoramic camcorder. The Dot is elegantly designed, and the videos are fun, interactive, and immersive for anyone viewing, even if the quality of the video leaves something to be desired.

Design and Use
The Kogeto Dot is a simple, lightweight accessory that easily snaps on and off your iPhone. However, you will have to remove any case you have protecting your iPhone, leaving it vulnerable to bumps and drops. The main component is the lens, which measures roughly an inch in height and 1.25 inches in diameter. It positions itself over the camera on the back of the iPhone, and employs an extremely thin plastic mount to stay securely in place. The whole effect is quite elegant, though the protrusion makes it a bit odd to keep in your pocket.

Once in place, you'll need to download Kogeto's Looker app, which is available for free in the Apple App Store. Start the app, calibrate the lens position (simply drag a marker to the right position) and you're ready to shoot 360-degree video, which Kogeto calls dotspots.

When Kogeto says "shoot 360-degree panoramic video from the palm of your hand," they really mean it. To get the best video, you have to hold your iPhone somewhat awkwardly, with the screen facing down in the palm of your hand. You can also grip the phone on the sides with your fingers, but in my tests, it was difficult to keep my fingertips out of the shot. The Dot provides pretty much no protection, making its screen-down use a bit precarious.

Check out a quick tour of the PCMag Labs using the Kogeto Dot. Click and drag within the video to see all 360 degrees.

Performance and Conclusions
The Looker app limits you to 8 minutes of video, but this never proved too short for my uses, and fits the novel purpose of the Dot. The quality, on the other hand, is pretty poor, with warped, pixelated video. The distortion is to be expected with such an odd lens, but the pixelation really detracted from the video.

Even so, watching the results is the best part. The videos don't show all 360-degrees at once; instead, you swipe back and forth to choose what you're seeing at any given moment. In other words, you have complete control of what you're looking at, in real-time, within the video as it plays. The effect is quite immersive, making for a great way to give virtual tours, or capture crowds and performers at a concert, to give just a few examples. Once you've recorded some dotspots, you can share them directly to Twitter, Facebook, and Kogeto's own website, making it fun and easy to share your videos with friends. Looker also has some basic video trimming and flipping options, for polishing your video a bit before sharing.

There really aren't a lot of options out there for 360-degree, interactive videos. Complicated cameras with multiple lens arrays can achieve a similar effect, but none are as simple and easy to use as the Dot. In terms of apps and iPhone accessories with similar functionality, outside of a few Kickstarter projects, the Dot stands alone. At $79, the Kogeto Dot is not cheap. But if you can deal with the grainy video quality, the end result is a truly unique, fun, and interactive way to capture any moment with your iPhone 4 or 4S.

Tomatometer Watch: The Avengers

Will Marvel's superhero tag-team assemble a Certified Fresh?

While the film doesn't open 'til May 4 in the US, international Avengers fans get to see their heroes a week earlier -- and there are plenty of reviews coming in. If early buzz is any indication, this one's likely to go down as one of the best critically-reviewed comic book films ever.

Empire magazine's James White calls it "A joyous blend of heroism and humour that raises the stakes even as it maintains a firm grip on what makes the individual heroes tick," while for Leigh Paatsch, writing at Australia's Daily Telegraph, it's a "truly epic action picture [that] positively pulses with panache, wit and excitement throughout."

The Guardian's Henry Barnes is also impressed, noting -- for the non-fanboy element -- that the movie "carries the mark of a piece of expensively assembled fan fiction, albeit stitched together with a lightness and wit that will just about carry the casual viewer through two-and-a-half-hours of comic geek nirvana."

Todd McCarthy concurs over at The Hollywood Reporter: "Whedon pulls off a stunning feat in bringing balance to this superhuman circus, engineered to charm the geek core and non-fans alike." Meanwhile, Variety's Justin Chang writes: "Like a superior, state-of-the-art model built from reconstituted parts, Joss Whedon's buoyant, witty and robustly entertaining superhero smash-up is escapism of a sophisticated order."

Not everyone will succumb to Marvel's juggernaut, however, as Amy Nicholson illustrates at Box Office Magazine. "The Avengers needs more ambition," she writes. "Prehistoric metal monsters smashing up skyscrapers? We've seen that before. For Avengers 2 (because there will inevitably be an Avengers 2) ask not what Michael Bay would do to New York -- ask what Hieronymus Bosch would do to anywhere he damn well pleased." A Bosch-fueled epic? Genius. That we'd definitely pay to see.

The Avengers is out in theaters on May 4.

Ferguson warns Young against diving in title race

updated 1:55 p.m. ET April 20, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has told winger Ashley Young to stop diving in an attempt to win penalties in the final stretch of the Premier League title race.

Second-place Manchester City is at struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday so United almost certainly needs victory over visiting Everton the same day to maintain its five-point lead at the top of the standings.

The matches are the last for the leading pair before they go head-to-head on April 30 and the margins are so fine that the eventual outcome of the title could hinge on as little as one goal.

But Ferguson has still warned Young and acknowledged that he crumpled too easily under a challenge against Aston Villa last week.

"I'm not sure Ashley tried to get the penalty kick but he certainly went down quickly," Ferguson said. "I've had a word with Ashley and he understands where we're coming from. Hopefully it makes a difference."

Ferguson quickly pointed to where Young should look for advice on how to model his game.

"We have a player here who stays on his feet and he's been doing that for 20 years," Ferguson said. "How many penalty kicks has Ryan Giggs won for Manchester United? He's won five in 20 years. That's some record. Do you know why? Because his balance is so good and he never goes down. That's the amazing thing about him."

Young's former Villa teammate, Nathan Delfounesco, publicly accused Young of lacking respect for diving and the danger for the United winger is that referees may become over cautious in turning down genuine appeals for kicks if he maintains his reputation.

"You get bad decisions and you get good decisions. It evens itself out, believe me," Ferguson said. "It's the same for everybody."

Young and Giggs are both in the squad for Sunday's game against Everton, which has not won in 19 trips to Old Trafford since the inaugural Premier League season in 1992-93.

Michael Owen has been training again with the first team after five months out injured but Ferguson said this weekend's match is too soon for the former England striker.

"If there's a player who can score an important goal at any stage of the match, it's him," Ferguson said. "When he gets an injury it's never an easy one: it's months rather than weeks. It's unfortunate because he's a fantastic striker."

Everton left back Leighton Baines is out with a hamstring injury but midfielder Steven Pienaar can play after he was ineligible for last weekend's FA Cup semifinal loss to Liverpool.

City is desperate for victory to keep up the pressure on United, which will win a 20th English title if it wins its next two matches. A victory for City would relegate Wolves but would prove difficult for City's former Wolves defender, Joleon Lescott.

Lescott said Wolves manager Terry Connor was a hugely important figure for him.

"I owe a lot to everyone connected with Wolves, none more so than Terry Connor," Lescott said. "When Terry first arrived, I was just coming out of the youth team and was just going into the reserves. He was the development coach at the time and I still believe he has been the single biggest influence on my career.

"Once the whistle goes on Sunday, of course, it's all down to being professional."

Also Sunday, Liverpool hosts West Bromwich Albion.

There are seven games Saturday: Arsenal vs. Chelsea; Aston Villa vs. Sunderland; Blackburn vs. Norwich; Bolton vs. Swansea; Fulham vs. Wigan; Newcastle vs. Stoke; and Queens Park Rangers vs. Tottenham.

Chelsea wants to avenge a 5-3 loss to Arsenal earlier this season to boost its chances of finishing fourth but will have to do so without Didier Drogba.

The veteran Ivory Coast striker scored in Wednesday's 1-0 Champions League win over Barcelona but hurt his knee in that match and has been ruled out of Saturday's game.

"He was marked most of time by two men and I think got a lot of physical battering as well on the night," Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo said. "We have to assess him tomorrow and Sunday and how he recovers."

Any slip up by Chelsea, which could have one eye on next week's return match against Barcelona, could give Tottenham the chance to reassert itself in the chase for a Champions League berth.

Spurs are two points ahead of fifth-place Chelsea but will be at QPR without central defender Younes Kaboul and midfielder Niko Kranjcar.

As Bahrain F1 Protests Continue, Tech Sponsors Go Along For The Ride

birdAs the newer crop of Internet and mobile technology companies gradually become the big industries of tomorrow, they are slowly entering the world of corporate sponsorship, previously the province of older giants like IBM and Cisco. It's an area not for the faint-hearted. We've already seen IBM come under fire for backing the US Masters, run by a golf club that refused membership to IBM's CEO based simply on her body parts, when people with other kinds of parts normally get let in. Interesting choice there guys. Now we have a new issue altogether. The Formula One circus is staging a Grand Prix in Bahrain right now, a nation not normally associated with the most fabulous human rights record, exactly. Admittedly there are few such things as untarnished countries, but right now - as we you read this in fact - citizens in Bahrain are actively demonstrating for greater democratic reforms, along the lines of the Arab Spring movement, in the very city the F1 action is taking place. Meanwhile, the cuddly image of a Rovio Angry Birds character is currently doing laps on the Bahrain circuit and a major tech VC is sponsoring one of the teams.
