Patriots owner wants NFL team in London

12:32 p.m. CDT, June 29, 2012

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has taken his team to England for regular-season games, and he'd gladly do it every season.

Kraft isn't just talking about the once-a-year featured game in London. He said Wednesday the NFL is ready for a franchise based across the pond.

"I personally think we should have a franchise in London and that is something I am going to push for," Kraft said, according to Sky Sports, at a speaking engagement in England. "I think I said that the last time we were over here in 2009 and before this next decade is out, I hope we have a team here. I think that would be right for the NFL and this fan base has proven they deserve it."

The NFL schedules one regular-season game each year in England and there are plans to expand to two games per season. Kraft believes the time is right to expand even further, but assured New Englanders it won't be the Patriots.

"I think we're starting to tap out in the United States," Kraft said. "If you look at the last Super Bowl we were in this past season, we had over 180 million people watching -- that's almost two thirds of America. So for us to grow the game, we have to expand globally. Having seen the kind of support we have received here in London, it is the intention of the NFL owners to get two games here, starting next year."

Colorado blaze: Most destructive in history ( video)

Leaving hundreds of homes in its wake, Colorado's fire has caused more damage than any other in the state. Aerial images clearly show the damage. Several western fires are still burning.

A raging Colorado?wildfire?that forced tens of thousands to flee destroyed an estimated 346 homes this week, making it the most destructive fire in the state's history, officials said Thursday.

As Anna Werner reports, they may be getting some assistance from Mother Nature.

From above, the destruction becomes painfully clear: Rows and rows of houses were reduced to smoldering ashes even as some homes just feet away survived largely intact.

On one street, all but three houses had burned to their foundations, said Ryan Schneider, whose home is still standing in a neighborhood where 51 others were destroyed.

"I was real happy at first. My wife was happy," he said. "The emotion of seeing the other homes, though, was instant sadness."

The aerial photos showing the scope of one of the worst fires to hit the American West in decades did little to help ease the concerns of many residents who still did not know the fate of homes.

Amid the devastation in the foothills of Colorado Springs, there were hopeful signs. Flames advancing on the U.S. Air Force Academy were stopped and cooler conditions could help slow the fire.

As of mid-day Thursday, the fire was 10 percent contained. The cost of fighting the blaze had already reached $3.2 million.

Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach said the 346 estimate could change. A fire in northern Colorado, which is still burning, destroyed 257 homes and until Thursday was the most destructive in state history.

For now, Bach said, the news of the destruction would make it very difficult for the city about 60 miles south of Denver.

"This is going to be a tough evening, but we're going to get through it," Bach said. "This community is going to surround them with love and encouragement ... We will move forward as a community."

More than 30,000 people frantically packed up belongings Tuesday night as the flames swept through their neighborhoods. While there's no indication yet the blaze claimed any lives, fire officials said they would search each home looking for possible remains.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said two people have been arrested in connection with a burglary at an evacuated home. Belinda Yates and Shane Garrett were being held on charges including second-degree burglary and possession of methamphetamine.

Community officials were planning to begin the process of notifying residents Thursday that their homes were destroyed. For many residents, the official notification was a formality.

Residents recognize their street on aerial pictures and carefully scrutinize the images to determine the damage. Photos and video from The Associated Press and the Denver Post showed widespread damage.

Colorado Springs, the state's second-largest city, is home to the U.S. Olympic Training Center, NORAD and the Air Force Space Command, which operates military satellites. They were not threatened.

Conditions were still too dicey to allow authorities to begin trying to figure out what sparked the blaze that has raged for much of the week and already burned more than 29 square miles.

President Barack Obama was to tour fire-stricken areas Friday as hundreds of locals and some tourists who were staying at Red Cross shelters hoped life would return to normal. Other stayed with friends and family.

My Dinners with Nora | Welcome To

By AMY DICKINSON

Many people more talented than I are eulogizing Nora Ephron. She surrounded herself with talented people (both her parents were celebrated screenwriters and her sisters, husband, ex-husband and closest friends are writers), and she was universally adored by her legion of friends and fans.

I circumnavigated Nora Ephron?s orbit on the outer ring of a constellation of friends and admirers whose lives she touched. I can?t claim a friendship, but she was the sort of person who made you wish for an intimate?connection. I knew her just well enough to know that she wouldn?t deny a friendship if I claimed one, but I didn?t dare claim one.

I first met Nora about seven years ago when my boss at the Chicago Tribune contacted me to say Nora was visiting Chicago and that I should make an attempt to entertain her at a dinner out.

I froze, paralyzed at the prospect of dining out with a famous foodie in a famously foody city. Such was my terror that I agonized for days and basically took to my bed. What would it be? The culinary masterstroke of Alinea ? or the more low-key authentic Mexican at Frontera Grill? Street food? Salad? Frozen yogurt? And would Nora Ephron, like her famous character from ?When Harry Met Sally,? deconstruct her meal and order everything to be served ?on the side??

Photos via Cheers to the Good Life

I was in over my head. Overwhelmed. So I threw a Hail Mary and simply walked her across the street from her hotel to the Drake Hotel?s dusty?rathskeller for a bowl of Bookbinder soup.

I can?t?say this was a good idea. In fact, it was a terrible idea. Our dining experience lacked every single element a food lover would seek ? including an attractive atmosphere, decent service, and yes ? good food. By making her eat soup, I had even denied her the opportunity to have anything on the side.

I?m sure Nora wasn?t thrilled, but she didn?t seem to mind, either.

Food may be everything, but it?s not the only thing.

During our dinner she was fun, she was charming, and she thrilled me by signing my old copy of ?Heartburn.? How appropriate, I thought, having been responsible on this particular night for Nora Ephron suffering a case of non-fictional heartburn.

A major effort that night was devoted to suppressing my impulse to quote Nora Ephron movies, which is something I like to do ? because, (as she pointed out in ?You?ve Got Mail,?) while ?The Godfather? is the I-Ching for men, lines from ?When Harry Met Sally,? ?You?ve got Mail? and ?Sleepless in Seattle? definitely have a way of bubbling up, certainly for women of a certain age. At our dinner I was trying very hard not to behave like the superfan I was, but I did manage to tell her that her parents Henry?and Phoebe wrote my all-time favorite movie, ?Desk Set.?

The day after our dinner Nora Ephron?s agent called me. Before leaving Chicago Nora had called her speaker?s agent to suggest he represent me. I?m not sure how this came about, except I remember her saying to me at dinner, ?Do you ever give speeches? You?d be good at that.?

And it was done.

That?s when I first encountered what was to be the primary dynamic in my relationship with Nora: She would do very nice things for me and I would be very grateful.

Some months later she came back to Chicago to speak at the massive Harold Washington Library downtown to celebrate her massively bestselling essay collection ?I Feel Bad About My Neck.?

I caught a cab and went downtown. The crowd was such that the first several hundred people got to sit in the auditorium and watch Nora Ephron speak in person.

I sat with 200 other overflow attendees in folding chairs in an underground bunker in the building, watching Nora Ephron speak on a movie screen with a slight audio delay.

She was the way she always was that night ? funny, nice, honest, and perfectly charming. I enjoyed her, even from the basement.

By the time I made my way upstairs to the auditorium after her talk, several hundred women were already in line waiting for her to sign their books. I stood at the end of the line. It turns out that many, many, many women do feel bad about their necks, and as our line inched forward, I listened to their complaints as they overshared and laughed and got to know one another.

I just wanted to say hello and thank her personally for the agent-matching. I thought of her generosity every time I gave a speech, which, it turns out, is fairly often. Nora?s instinct about me was good ? I am good at it.

I was the very last person in line, and as the books were being packed up I quickly swept up, reintroduced myself and told her I wanted to thank her in person for her kindness.

And then she asked me to dinner.

It went like this: ?Oh Amy, come to dinner with me!?

We went to a cool little Italian place, on a corner in the fringes of downtown, hard by the el tracks. It reeked with Chicago authenticity and was the exact opposite of the food experience I had given to her. I knew instantly how lucky I was and I told myself to drink it in and enjoy every moment.

Before we went inside, while we were sitting in the car, I did the second smartest thing I?ve ever done.

I asked for Nora?s advice. I was contemplating writing a memoir and I wanted to know how much I could reveal without hurting my relationship with family members. She told me about her own story ? about being the child of screenwriters, including a mother who famously said, ?Everything is copy.? She described the thievery of having your story and identity borrowed by parents to use as material. She said to me, ?You have your own story. Tell that one. Your daughter has her own story, and that story belongs to her. Don?t tell anyone else?s story, except when it intersects with yours.? She told me to ask permission of the people I wanted to write about.

Credit: Warner Brothers/Photofest via Academy of Achievement

We talked about the tension of describing the painful breakup of a marriage (the way she did in ?Heartburn?) when you have children whose feelings you don?t want to hurt.

She told me to tell my daughter the truth privately and to protect her feelings in print.

After that I did the smartest thing I?ve ever done.

I listened to Nora and decided to follow her advice.

While waiting at the bar for our table to be set she got a call from her publisher saying that her essay collection had just passed the 750,000 sales mark. In hardcover. Later I would understand more deeply what a stunning accomplishment that is, but on that night I simply watched her be delighted. It was fun.

Nora?s husband Nick Pileggi joined us, along with two old friends of theirs from Chicago. I was looped into the group of seasoned friendships, and they acted like I belonged. I was so entranced I wanted to ?All About Eve? her on the spot ? to worm my way into her life.

Credit: Pacha/Corbis via Academy of Achievement

The next day I told my daughter about my dinner with Nora and told her about the advice I?d received. I asked my child?s permission to let me write my story, and a told her a couple of important things about her own history that I had never told her ? things that I might choose to write about later.

This, also, was Nora?s suggestion. She said to tell my daughter the truth about her life, because the truth is the truth ? aside from what you write about.

Credit: 20th Century Fox/Photofest via Academy of Achievement

Our contact was sporadic over the years. I published?my memoir (?The Mighty Queens of Freeville?)?and got married; she brought another book out and directed an Oscar-winning film. We were in touch back and forth to congratulate one another, but I was too shy to puncture her niceness, and I regret that. I wish I inserted myself a little more. I wish I dared to call her on my infrequent trips to New York. I wish I had known her better.

Regardless of my intentions, the primary dynamic between us was of an older, wildly successful woman being kind to a younger writer, and then graciously accepting the ing?nue?s gratitude in return.

Credit: Michel Arnaud via Oprah

Nora was nice, and I treasured knowing her. She set a great example ? not only by her professional success ? but also by the way she lived. Her life seemed beautiful to me. Her desk was clean.

As I write this I am on a brief trip from my hometown to New York City. As usual, whenever I?m headed to New York I think a lot about Nora. I have an old poster from her parents? movie ?Desk Set? that I was going to send to her. I delayed sending it along because I loved the poster so much. But on the bus ride to the city I reminded myself to get it together and finally pack up that poster when I got home.

On my bus trip I sat near a younger writer who sought me out to say she was my biggest fan. She sweetly praised my work and from our conversation it was clear she had really been paying attention ? maybe too much attention (she assured me she wasn?t a stalker). This younger writer quoted things I had written back to me.

She was headed to the city to have a meeting about a book she was working on. I was coming in to see my agent. She had her city clothes in a backpack and was going to find a public bathroom to change her clothes in before her meeting.

I invited her to come to my hotel room to freshen up and change her clothes. I looked over her book material and we talked about her complicated situation. I offered to introduce her to my agent.

As she was leaving we exchanged contact information and vowed to have coffee one of these days. She asked for my street address: ?I want to write you a proper note to say thank you!? she said.

Three hours later I heard that Nora had died. I started missing her immediately. I would never be able to know her better. I?d never be able to impress her with my gratitude.

What a fool I am. But I get it now. Like all my lessons, I learned this one the hard way. The way I paid Nora Ephron back was to be kind to another writer, the way Nora was kind to me.

2012 Harris Poll EquiTrend? Automotive Scorecard: Mercedes-Benz and Honda Lead;

Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com Debuts as Online Auto Shopping Brand of the Year
Napa AutoCare, Bose Car Audio, Pennzoil Motor Oil, Michelin, Garmin, and Yamaha Motorcycles rank highest in their categories

NEW YORK, June 25, 2012-After three years of turmoil and consumer skepticism, the automotive industry is beginning to rebound. With new car sales finally on the rise, two manufacturers - Mercedes-Benz and Honda - reign supreme in successfully harnessing their equity and leading their industries as Brands of the Year. In fact, Mercedes-Benz is enjoying this achievement for the second year in a row, according to the 2012 Harris Poll EquiTrend? (EQ) study, a yearly brand-health assessment from Harris Interactive, one of the world's leading custom and multi-client market research firms.

Mercedes-Benz Retains Title as Lead Luxury Auto Brand

In a segment where luxury is synonymous with superb quality and craftsmanship, the Mercedes-Benz brand resonates more strongly with consumers than any other luxury automotive brand included in the Harris Poll EquiTrend study. Mercedes-Benz's strong performance in EQ has earned it the Luxury Automotive Brand of the Year accolade for the second year running.

"Mercedes-Benz and Lexus have been battling over this top ranking for the last eight years," says Mike Chadsey, Senior Consultant for Harris Interactive's Customer Relationship Consulting team. "Mercedes has ranked at the top for two years in a row and four of the last eight years, while Lexus has made it to the top spot three times. BMW is also usually within the top three, with especially strong scores over the last three years. Quality and Purchase Consideration both play important roles in these annual rankings," says Chadsey.

Beyond these perennial leaders, Cadillac, Acura, Infiniti, and Audi also rank above the category's average equity score.

Honda: America's Favorite Full Line Automaker

The ranking was close and the results are in - Honda overtakes both Toyota and Ford to become the 2012 Full Line Automotive Brand of the Year. It replaces last year's top-ranked automaker, Ford.

Having overcome some quality concerns and recalls in 2011, Toyota has come back strong. It climbs into second place, which is up two notches from its fourth-place position in 2011, and that much closer to the top spot it held only two years ago in 2010. Toyota's increase in brand equity is the largest of the brands measured in the category.

Although its equity score has actually increased, Ford has slipped to third place in the 2012 rankings- a further testament to the highly competitive nature of the automotive market. Chevrolet, Nissan, Subaru, Hyundai, and Volkswagen also rank above average in the full line automotive category.

In addition to measuring the brand equity of the luxury and full line automotive manufacturers, EQ also measures the auto industry's ancillary products and services, including tires, motor oil, and service centers, among others. Here's a look at the top brands in each category and how each of the categories stacks up overall:

Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com Debuts as Online Auto Shopping Brand of the Year

Online auto sales sites constitute a new Harris Poll EquiTrend category for 2012, and Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com earns the Online Auto Shopping Brand of the Year accolade, followed by Edmunds.com in second place. KBB.com is the more familiar brand, due largely to its long heritage and strong association as the industry benchmark for used car values. Additionally, KBB.com enjoys high Quality scores, compared to other brands surveyed.

Napa AutoCare Takes Brand of the Year Title in EQ Debut

First-time EQ brand, Napa AutoCare outranks 19 competitors to earn the Automotive Service Center Brand of the Year accolade in the 2012 Harris Poll EquiTrend study. Discount Tire, also a new brand to the EQ study, places second, surpassing last year's top-ranked brand, Goodyear Tire and Service Network, which fell to third. National Tire and Battery, Valvoline Instant Oil Change, Firestone Automotive Service Centers, Walmart Tire & Lube Express, and Mobil 1 Lube Express all round out the top eight brands above the category average.

Bose Tops New Car Audio Category

Another of Harris Poll EquiTrend's new categories is Car Audio, where Bose debuts as the Brand of the Year. This is an especially important finding for luxury automotive manufacturers, which select branded audio systems that fit their own brand promises and appeal to consumers.

"Bose enjoys very strong Familiarity, Quality, and Purchase Intention scores among the general population, as well as top-ranked Leadership and Brand Momentum scores. Clearly, Americans see Bose as a leader within its category, as well as a brand that has a bright future," says Chadsey.

Well-known by consumers, Harman/Kardon, Boston Acoustics, Infinity, and Alpine all ranked above the category average.

Pennzoil Motor Oil Makes It Three Years in a Row

In a category filled with many well-known brands, Pennzoil takes the Motor Oil Brand of the Year honor for the third consecutive year. Despite a large drop in overall Familiarity, Pennzoil retains its strong Quality and Purchase Intention scores to keep its top ranking. Mobil 1, Valvoline, Rotella, Quaker State, and Castrol motor oils also placed above the category average.

Michelin Enjoys Six Years as America's Tire Brand

Michelin continues to dominate the automotive tire market, achieving the highest-ranked position in the Harris Poll EquiTrend study for six consecutive years. As usual, Goodyear and BF Goodrich round out the top three brands in the 2012 study. Bridgestone, Pirelli, and Cooper also rank better than the category average.

Garmin Navigates to Top Position

Garmin is ranked as the GPS Navigation Brand of the Year for 2012. Garmin leads in key aspects of brand equity, including Familiarity, Quality, and Purchase Intention.

Yamaha Cuts off Harley-Davidson

Gains made in Quality and Purchase Consideration by Yamaha pushed the brand ahead of Harley-Davidson to secure the Motorcycle Brand of the Yearaccolade in the 2012 Harris Poll EquiTrend study.

Higher scores in Familiarity, Quality, and Purchase Intention helped move Yamaha ahead of Harley-Davidson.

About Harris Poll EquiTrend?

Harris Poll EquiTrend? is a leading Brand Equity tracking study conducted by Harris Interactive that measures and compares brand health for more than 1,500 brands. The study was conducted online from January 31 through February 20, 2012 and analyzes the responses of over 38,500 consumers on key measures of brand health - including how well the public knows a brand, how positively they think of the brand and their consideration to do business with or donate to a brand. Each brand is rated 1,000 times among respondents who are familiar with the brand. Harris Interactive has conducted its EquiTrend study regularly since 1989, and can offer yearly trended data from 2005.
