HuffPost Radio: BOTH SIDES: Accen-tu-ate the Negative: Mitt Hides Taxes? Yes. Barack Hates U.S. & Business? Nah.

Ron Reagan and Mary Matalin debate when mud sticks. In finding an alleged Muslim mole at State, Michele Bachmann showed herself to be, in Joan Walsh's pungent phrase, "a McCarthy with lipstick." But this week also saw salvos that again question Obama's roots and loyalties. Wasn't this litigated in 2008 when he won by over eight million votes? Is criticism of Romney's tax and SEC filings the equivalent of criticism of Obama's patriotism?

On Attacking Romney for Tax Returns. It's Week Two on Romney's hidden finances now that The National Review, The Wall Street Journal and numerous GOP luminaries (Perry, Paul, Scarborough, Kristol, Will, Dowd... ) have urged Romney to disclose more than one year of his tax returns.

Reagan argues that stonewalling for the 110 days until the election will be a "drip, drip, drip" that will be very damaging since the presumptive nominee, a cost-benefit efficiency expert, sure looks like he has something to hide. Mary vigorously disagrees, concluding that more isn't required, that it would only boost Obama's negative research and that folks "care more about their taxes than Romney's." Why then are Ann Romney and she about the only people sticking up for Mitt? "Never send a man to do a woman's job," she cheerfully responds. As for those "armchair warriors" urging more disclosure based on George Romney's example, "they're playing under the old rules and, respectfully, are wrong. Guess what -they're not the nominee."

Ron adds that this is not merely a process/procedural issue but one that reflects character. Romney looks like a guy "who is entitled and plays by his own set of rules." Mary wonders why "rich Democratic candidates aren't similarly questioned, like John Kerry"? Ron reminds us that it was his wife not running for president who had the big portfolio, not him -- and he released tax returns for every year in the Senate.

LISTEN HERE:

On Attacking Obama for... whatever. The Romney outrage machine struck back at Obama by first questioning his much-publicized comments in Roanoke that businesses need individual initiative and public roads/bridges/education to succeed. Mary agrees with Romney that this comment in historic context shows Obama's to be a "spread the wealth around" collectivist. But speaking of this specific context, Ron asserts that Romney is simply "lying" in an ad that omits part of the quote that makes it obvious Obama's "you didn't build that" refers to roads, not companies. Indeed, Romney himself later made the exact same point, one that reflects E. J. Dionne's new book, The Divided American Heart, namely that that the American story is one of balancing individualism and community.

Lying? Mary retorts that Obama is one too since he called Romney a "felon." Ron replies that it wasn't Obama but aide Stephanie Cutter who said that because, factually, if Romney signed false SEC documents about his role at Bain Capital '99-'01, "it would be a felony."

Then we listen to Limbaugh, Sununu and Romney saying, respectively, that "Obama hates America," that he smoked weed and spent time in Indonesia and that he had "foreign" views. Ron hotly asks Mary if it would OK then for Obama's campaign to say that "Romney hates America"? He adds that this mudslinging may appeal to "those mouthbreathers in the GOP base who already believe he's a Kenyan socialist but will repel that 6 percent of swing voters who will decide the election."

Mary doesn't think that any of the men went too far in their attacks. Isn't it smarter for the Republicans to focus almost exclusively on the economy given weak numbers or continue to assail Obama so personally? "Both," she answers, maintaining that Limbaugh is right that Obama "is dismantling America brick-by-brick."

On Who Will Get the Silver for Veep. The panelists weigh in on who will be asked to join the GOP ticket. In an era of strong VPs like Cheney and Biden, they agree that the criteria are who could be president if necessary, would "do no harm" to Romney, who gets along with him personally and, in Mary's words, "has real Washington experience since we're in a mess."

What about the Beltway conclusion that it's down to Tim Pawlenty and Rob Portman? Our Republican expert notes that Pawlenty has "an everyman appeal and was a red governor in a blue state [Minnesota]" while Portman is really smart and respected. Will his years at OMB under Bush be a liability given the poor economic performance that led to the Great Recession, the Host asks? Mary thinks that credential would be an asset. And she tosses out the name of Paul Ryan as an o-wow pick. Ron thinks it's an "oh-no" choice because of his Medicare voucher proposal -- then there's talk of Gov. McDonnell of Viriginia since, like Portman's Ohio, it's a swing state. (No Rubio or Ayotte mentions.)

Last, Mr. Reagan is asked if it's true that former president Gerald Ford offered himself as a sort of VP "co-president" to his father in 1980? The son confirms that he and Mike Deaver listened to the ex-prez make his case to the future-prez, both hoping (and believing) that Dutch would say no. (Host: using history as a guide, son and father were vindicated.)

*Quick Takes: Lin/Weiner. Katie's Liberation. Punishing PA and JoPa. With Linsanity over and enroute to Houston and Anthony Weiner considering an NYC comeback, the panel is asked about other toast to toast-of-town to toast stories. Mary talks about this being a country of second chances, citing the Clintons in particular. Ron goes with Nixon and Bo Jackson.

Then neither regard Katie Holmes's choreographed escape from her husband's celebrity and religion as particularly noteworthy -- and they also agree that Joe Paterno's statue at Beaver Stadium should be taken down [it was the next day]. And there's consensus that the next football season not be cancelled because that would punish innocent students. To maintain both sides, the Host focuses not on innocent Penn State students but innocent abused kids. "You punish the school which was part of the coverup in order to deter other institutions."

Colorful science sheds light on solar heating

Friday, July 20, 2012

A crucial, and often underappreciated, facet of science lies in deciding how to turn the raw numbers of data into useful, understandable information ? often through graphs and images. Such visualization techniques are needed for everything from making a map of planetary orbits based on nightly measurements of where they are in the sky to colorizing normally invisible light such as X-rays to produce "images" of the sun.

More information, of course, requires more complex visualizations and occasionally such images are not just informative, but beautiful too.

Such is the case with a new technique created by Nicholeen Viall, a solar scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. She creates images of the sun reminiscent of Van Gogh, with broad strokes of bright color splashed across a yellow background. But it's science, not art. The color of each pixel contains a wealth of information about the 12-hour history of cooling and heating at that particular spot on the sun. That heat history holds clues to the mechanisms that drive the temperature and movements of the sun's atmosphere, or corona.

"We don't understand why the corona is so hot," says Viall who wrote about this technique and her conclusions about the corona in a paper that appeared in The Astrophysical Journal. "The corona is 1,000 times hotter than the sun's surface, when we would expect it to get cooler as the atmosphere gets further away from the hot sun, the same way the air gets cooler further away from a fire."

Scientists generally agree that energy in the roiling magnetic fields of the sun must transfer energy and heat up into the atmosphere, but the exact details of that process are still debated. Viall created her technique to see if she could distinguish between theories that describe coronal heating as uniform over time, versus those that say it comes from numerous nanoflares on the sun's surface.

To look at the corona from a fresh perspective, Viall created a new kind of picture, making use of the high resolution provided by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). SDO's Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) provides images of the sun in 10 different wavelengths, each approximately corresponding to a single temperature of material. Therefore, when one looks at the wavelength of 171 Angstroms, for example, one sees all the material in the sun's atmosphere that is a million degrees Kelvin. By looking at an area of the sun in different wavelengths, one can get a sense of how different swaths of material change temperature. If an area seems bright in a wavelength at shows a hotter temperature an hour before it becomes bright in a wavelength that shows a cooler temperature, one can gather information about how that region has changed over time.

To study such temperature changes, many scientists focus on analyzing a specific subset of solar material, such as giant arcs of charged particles that leap up off the sun's surface called coronal loops. Scientists gather information about the loops by comparing nearly simultaneous images of the sun in different wavelengths. Analysis of the loops in each image requires time-consuming, manual analysis to subtract the background observations away from the loops themselves, a process which is also inherently subject to human judgment and bias. In addition, each individual image represents light from only a narrow range of wavelengths, representing material at a narrow range of temperatures.

Viall wanted to look at as much of the solar material in a given area of the corona as she could, incorporating information about a variety of temperatures simultaneously. She also wanted to avoid the subjective process of subtracting out the background. Instead, she decided to look at all light coming from a given spot on the sun at the same time. That meant coming up with a visualization technique to convey all that information at once -- and thus her Van Gogh-like images were born.

For an interesting spot on the sun, Viall examines six channels over an entire 12-hour stretch. She compares each channel to the other channels in turn, assigning it a red, orange, or yellow color if the area has cooled, and assigning it a blue or green color if the area has heated up. She assigns the exact shade of the color based on how much time it took for the temperature change to occur.

"In essence, I'm measuring the time lag of how long it takes a given area to heat up or cool down," says Viall. "But it's totally automated, with no need for humans to make a decision about what to incorporate or ignore. And all of the solar material is represented statistically, not just one wavelength of light."

Viall's images show a wealth of reds, oranges, and yellow, meaning that over a 12-hour period the material appear to be cooling. Obviously there must have been heating in the process as well, since the corona isn't on a one-way temperature slide down to zero degrees. Any kind of steady heating throughout the corona would have shown up in Viall's images, so she concludes that the heating must be quick and impulsive ? so fast that it doesn't show up in her images. This lends credence to those theories that say numerous nanobursts of energy help heat the corona.

Bringing "Neverland" Home | Caveon Test Security - Cheating ...

Posted on July 20, 2012 by Caveon

Written By: Christie Zervos, Director of Operations, Caveon Test Security

When I was a kid, I wanted to be Peter Pan. Yes, every kid says they want to be Peter Pan. But this is different: I really wanted to be Peter Pan. I watched the Disney movie probably once a week. I dressed up as Peter Pan for Halloween not twice, but three times. I even tried to fly off my 2nd story balcony (this I tried only once). But more than anything, I think, I wanted to save all those innocent children from the evil Captain Hook and the rest of those pesky, mangy pirates.

Decades later, looking back as an adult, I like to think that I have come to realize the romantic dreams of my childhood. No, I don?t talk to fairies or wear green tunics?and I still have yet to figured out how to fly?but I can call myself a real-life 21st century pirate-fighter. Modern pirates, of course, don?t tend to band together on large ships, sporting peg legs and parrots; they do their plundering within the privacy of their own homes, with the comfortable anonymity of cyberspace.

Of course, the piracy I?m referring to is online piracy; I am one of many web patrollers employed at Caveon Test Security, working to remove test fraud from the Internet.

While online pirates don?t always feel as menacing to us as the treacherous Captain Hooks of our children?s stories, the truth is the harm these pirates do is much more devastating as a whole. The problem of redistribution of confidential information through the Internet hits businesses the hardest, compromising institutional integrity and devaluing intellectual property, but it also looms over the entire nation, costing the U.S. economy $100 billion and thousands of jobs every year.

Since working for Caveon Test Security, I?ve been able to play a role in fighting online piracy and especially in detecting and preventing cases of cheating. As a Web Patrol expert, my job consists of isolating critical online information for our clientele and locating all instances of cheating or redistribution of confidential material. This process spans all spaces of the Internet, including confidential material sold on consumer-to-consumer platforms such as Craigslist or eBay, torrent websites such as The Pirate Bay and LimeWire and basic search engines such as Google or Yahoo. In the process, I have been surprised to find copious amounts of stolen information across all areas of the Internet and it has been so rewarding to play a role in restoring the integrity and profitability of our client?s testing programs.

Caveon also employs web patrollers with various backgrounds and language skills in order to detect piracy from all corners of the world. Our team patrols the web in English, Hindu, Tagalog, French, Korean and Mandarin Chinese.

While it is at times difficult, my work at Caveon has been some of the most fulfilling, knowing that, in a very direct way, I am helping companies succeed by removing very confidential information from the Internet that could undermine their very survival as an institution. In a way that I had never imagined as a six-year-old, I would do the work that I?ve always wanted to do: Fight pirates.

How a Painter Can Help

Hiring a professional painter can take the stress out of your next home improvement project. Instead of going through the hassle of doing the job yourself or wasting time and money, think about having someone with years of experience tackle the work for you.

Sometimes, ceilings even need painting. If the resident before you was a smoker, it is likely that the paint is somewhat yellowed. You may even still notice a smoky smell. Using paint specifically designed to address these issues, a professional can help.

A professional can definitely improve the look of your home, and one of the best ways they can do this is by supplying unique artwork. Many people have generic, popular art hanging in their homes as decoration. But, by having a local artist?s work on display in your home, you can add a distinct touch to any room.

There are a number of ways in which a professional painter can help your home or business. If you need something painted, consider utilizing the services of someone who is experienced in the field.

Report: Canada Looks to Archive Tweets, Other Social Media

There?s no Dewey Decimal system for the Internet, as Canadian archivists are discovering.

The Vancouver Sun reports that in an attempt to bring retrieval of all things Canadian to modern times, the Library and Archives Canada agency is looking for a way to archive tweets, blogs, and other online documents.

But it?s a difficult task.
?
"Any kind of historical record would be entirely incomplete without having some record of YouTube or the blogosphere or Twitter," Greg Elmer, director of the Centre for the Study of Social Media at Ryerson University in Toronto, told the Sun. "We simply don't have access to the means by which information is stored, indexed and formatted on YouTube or Twitter. It makes it an unreliable way of archiving information.?

Library and Archives Canada, the nation?s national library, houses nearly 3.2 million megabytes of information in electronic formats, as well as 21 million photographs, 270,000 hours of video and sound recordings, and much more.

In 2010, the U.S. Library of Congress announced it would archive every tweet since 2006 and onward, striking a deal with Twitter to receive all public tweets ever recorded. But U.S. officials admit it?s been a difficult project.

The hurdle of manually archiving the non-stop stream of online information is a modern problem, and most archival institutions have not yet caught up to modern technology, Elmer said.

Sweetly Raw: Refreshing Noodles

As I said in my last post, I have a simple savory recipe to share - rather, a few recipes. Let's face it. In the summer we want to eat cooling, watery foods.?Zucchini pasta is a tasty, light, yet filling meal to enjoy this time of year.?Kelp noodles are another fun base for a refreshing pasta dish and I have a few ideas for that as well.
Recently I kicked up regular sun dried tomato sauce and enjoyed it over zucchini noodles along with a sprinkle of hemp seeds. The kalamata olives are one of the components that really make the sauce... they add some body and a touch of creaminess. Can't beat fresh basil with noodles either! Mmmm!
Chunky Sundried Tomato Sauce

1/2 cup packed sun dried tomatoes, soaked 3-6 hours
1 cup diced fresh tomato
1/2 cup diced red bell pepper
6 kalamata olives, pitted
1 small clove garlic
2 tablespoons chopped green onion
2 tablespoons packed fresh basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Squirt of lemon juice
1 tablespoon olive oil
Sea salt, to taste
Large handful chopped parsley

Process all ingredients except the parsley and salt, in a food processor until still a little chunky but mostly broken down.
Stir in the fresh parsley. Season with sea salt, to taste.
Toss with spiralized zucchini noodles.

Or maybe you want something creamy? This dish is heartier but so delicious and cooling. Perfect served with a salad. You can dress the noodles with just the sauce, or toss in some fresh herbs too. Sun dried tomato bits and small bits of red pepper are nice too and add a splash of color.

Alfredo Noodles

1 teaspoon himalayan salt

Blend all ingredients until smooth and creamy.

Toss with zucchini or kelp noodles.

How about something with a bit more zing?! Ginger, garlic, fresh cilantro, and miso flavored creamy sauce is paired with veggies and kelp or zucchini noodles.?

Creamy Ginger Kelp Noodles

1 package kelp noodles

Veggies of your choice, sliced such as:

Zucchini

Baby bok choy

bell peppers

Carrot

Celery

Cilantro

Chopped cashews, raw peanuts, or sunflower seeds

Creamy Miso Ginger Sauce

Here's another yummy sauce I made recently (I didn't get a pic), also for kelp noodles. It's creamy and coconutty which I love. Serve it over zucchini or kelp noodles with veggies.

1/4 cup raw sesame oil*

8 tablespoons orange juice

3 tablespoons almond butter

3 tablespoons white miso

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice

3 drops stevia

2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar

2-3" piece of ginger, peeled

1 small clove garlic

Cayenne, to taste

Blend all ingredients until smooth and creamy in a blender.

*not to be confused with toasted sesame oil which has a very strong taste. The extra virgin kind has a very neutral taste.

Stay tuned for a fun announcement this week!?

Try some raw vegan?Mac N Cheese. Recipe here!

What's your favourite noodle recipe??

On that note I'm hitting the lake for a swim! Hope you're having a fun weekend too!!!

Best Online Business Ideas to Start an Internet Business |

The tried and true ideas are some of the best online business ideas to start an internet business with. Even if you are new to trying to earn money on the internet with you have probably heard about selling things on Craigslist or eBay. But you may not be familiar with affiliate marketing or making money with blogging. Those that master either of these two avenues for making money can make a great living and can even become rich doing so.

As with any business venture you will need to determine what you have the ambition, desire, and passion to do everyday. You?ll also want to set goals that are realistic. You will need to consider the nuts and bolts of businesses such as eBay or Craigslist if you want to sell using them. You probably have some ?stuff? around your house right now that will sell but what will you do after those are gone?

With research you can determine what the hot items are and buy those cheaply yourself to then resell. But do you have the storage? What about shipping and handling? There are some great training materials available online to assist you in getting started.

Affiliate marketing is for those who would rather just promote products of other companies without the hassle of dealing directly with customers. This again will take some research to determine the best products to promote.

There are a lot of things to consider when coming up with products to promote. What niche are you most interested in? Will you get your own website to direct customers to first or will you strictly supply a link to the company who?s offering the product?

There are pros and cons of both but long term you?ll benefit the most by having your own website. This way you?ve captured the information (names and email address) of those showing interest in the product. You can then contact them in the future with other promotions.

In considering the products to promote it will be important that you find quality items that do what they say they will do. For example there are a lot of affiliate eBooks for sale that really only give basic information that someone could find easily on their own. And many do not offer true solutions to problems.

On the other hand there are thousands of great products that give you a chance to earn 50% to 80% commissions. Part of your research will be determining what products have the best chance to sell and finding out what your commissions will be.
