US stocks nearly unchanged as fiscal threat looms

(AP Photo/Henny Ray Abrams)

U.S. stocks closed nearly unchanged Monday, after a day of uneven trading plagued by investors' fears about the approaching "fiscal cliff."

The Dow Jones industrial average finished down 0.31 point at 12,815.08, according to data available at 5:30 p.m. EST. It had spent the day alternating between small gains and losses, never rising more than 46 points or falling more than 32.

The closing level of the Dow was revised several times after trading closed. The New York Stock Exchange had experienced a trading glitch during the day, forcing it to alter its normal procedure for determining the closing prices of some stocks.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged up 0.15 point to 1,380. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.61 to 2,904.26.

Trading was very light. The federal government and the U.S. bond market were closed for Veterans Day, and no economic reports were released.

The fiscal cliff refers to government spending cuts and tax increases that are scheduled to kick in at the beginning of the new year, unless a divided Congress and the White House can work out a compromise before then.

Some traders thought the tentative trading action was nearly inevitable because there has been no positive or negative news about the economy or the possibility of a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff.

"Nothing good is going on," said Scott Freeze, president of Street One Financial in Huntingdon Valley, Pa. "Everything forward-looking remains dreary."

Last week, after voters returned a long-deadlocked and divided government to Washington, the Dow dropped 434 points in two days and had one of its worst weeks of the year.

Even if lawmakers work out a compromise, as they usually do, the political fight until then is sure keep investors on edge, pitching the stock market back and forth until it's resolved. Economists say the cliff could cost the economy $800 billion and 3 million jobs and would plunge the U.S. back into recession.

President Barack Obama, a Democrat, and House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican, have spoken of compromise but appear to be taking firm stances on some issues. Obama will meet with labor representatives as well as other progressive groups Tuesday. He'll hold separate meetings with the business community Wednesday.

The effect on the markets has been widespread. Fiscal cliff worries were blamed for keeping a lid on European markets and Asian markets, which closed mostly lower.

In Greece, lawmakers passed a new austerity budget, and the country's international lenders drafted a report saying it had made progress in righting its finances. Greece is hoping the other euro countries will give it another $40 billion in bailout loans. The budget and the report are crucial steps toward that goal.

Still, the new bailout isn't a sure thing: Some of the potential lenders must seek approval from their parliaments. Greece's main stock market index closed down 3.6 percent.

Freeze was among the underwhelmed. "At this point, all the Greek news is just noise," he said. "None of these bailouts really solve the underlying problem. Now if all of a sudden Spain became incredibly solvent and its unemployment rate went to 5 percent, then you'd see" a reason to buy.

Across Europe, there were other reminders that the debt crisis is far from solved. The Banking Association of Spain, a country where hundreds of thousands of borrowers have fallen behind on their mortgages, said it would curb evictions of some struggling homeowners. In Portugal, demonstrators planned protests against a scheduled visit from German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Germany helped bail out Portugal last year and insisted that the government there cut spending as a condition of getting the money, a sore point for some in Portugal.

Among U.S. stocks making big moves:

? Leucadia National announced it would buy the investment banking firm Jefferies Group. Jefferies' chief will run the combined company. Leucadia, a holding company with investments in eclectic industries including beef processing and medical products, dropped 66 cents, or 3 percent, to $21.14. Jefferies soared $2, or 14 percent, to $16.27.

? Sherwin-Williams, the paint company, jumped 5.8 percent after announcing it will buy Consorcio Comex, a privately held rival based in Mexico City. Its stock rose $8.22 to $149.06.

? Best Buy leapt after announcing it had named a new finance chief, a former executive of the upscale kitchen store Williams-Sonoma. Analysts hope the new numbers cruncher can help turn around a chain that has struggled to keep up with online competitors. Best Buy's stock rose 55 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $15.85.

(AP) ? In a new twist to the Gen. David Petraeus sex scandal, the Pentagon said Tuesday that the top American commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, is under investigation for alleged "inappropriate communications" with a woman who is said to have received threatening emails from Paula Broadwell, the woman with whom Petraeus had an extramarital affair.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in a written statement issued to reporters aboard his aircraft, en route from Honolulu to Perth, Australia, that the FBI referred the matter to the Pentagon on Sunday.

Panetta said that he ordered a Pentagon investigation of Allen on Monday.

A senior defense official traveling with Panetta said Allen's communications were with Jill Kelley, who has been described as an unpaid social liaison at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., which is headquarters to the U.S. Central Command. She is not a U.S. government employee.

Kelley is said to have received threatening emails from Broadwell, who is Petraeus' biographer and who had an extramarital affair with Petraeus that reportedly began after he became CIA director in September 2011.

Petraeus resigned as CIA director on Friday.

Allen, a four-star Marine general, succeeded Petraeus as the top American commander in Afghanistan in July 2011.

The senior official, who discussed the matter only on condition of anonymity because it is under investigation, said Panetta believed it was prudent to launch a Pentagon investigation, although the official would not explain the nature of Allen's problematic communications.

The official said 20,000 to 30,000 pages of emails and other documents from Allen's communications with Kelley between 2010 and 2012 are under review. He would not say whether they involved sexual matters or whether they are thought to include unauthorized disclosures of classified information. He said he did not know whether Petraeus is mentioned in the emails.

"Gen. Allen disputes that he has engaged in any wrongdoing in this matter," the official said. He said Allen currently is in Washington.

Panetta said that while the matter is being investigated by the Defense Department Inspector General, Allen will remain in his post as commander of the International Security Assistance Force, based in Kabul. He praised Allen as having been instrumental in making progress in the war.

But the Allen investigation adds a new complication to an Afghan war effort that is at a particularly difficult juncture. Allen had just provided Panetta with options for how many U.S. troops to keep in Afghanistan after the U.S.-led coalition's combat mission ends in 2014. And he was due to give Panetta a recommendation soon on the pace of U.S. troop withdrawals in 2013.

The war has been largely stalemated, with little prospect of serious peace negotiations with the Taliban and questions about the Afghan government's ability to handle its own security after 2014.

At a photo session with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard shortly after he arrived in Perth, Panetta was asked by a reporter whether Allen could remain an effective commander in Kabul while under investigation. Panetta did not respond.

The FBI's decision to refer the Allen matter to the Pentagon rather than keep it itself, combined with Panetta's decision to allow Allen to continue as Afghanistan commander without a suspension, suggested strongly that officials viewed whatever happened as a possible infraction of military rules rather than a violation of federal criminal law.

Allen was Deputy Commander of Central Command, based in Tampa, prior to taking over in Afghanistan. He also is a veteran of the Iraq war.

In the meantime, Panetta said, Allen's nomination to be the next commander of U.S. European Command and the commander of NATO forces in Europe has been put on hold "until the relevant facts are determined." He had been expected to take that new post in early 2013, if confirmed by the Senate, as had been widely expected.

Allen was to testify at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday. Panetta said he asked committee leaders to delay that hearing.

The senior defense official said Panetta has not talked to Allen about the investigation, nor has he discussed the matter with President Barack Obama, although he consulted with unspecified White House officials before making the decision to seek a postponement of Allen's confirmation hearing.

Panetta did talk about the Allen matter with Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who happens to also be in Perth for a meeting of American and Australian diplomatic and defense officials. Those talks were starting Tuesday with an official dinner.

With a cloud over Allen's head, it was unclear Tuesday whether he would return to Kabul, even though Panetta said Allen would remain in command. The second-ranking American general in Afghanistan is Army Lt. Gen. James Terry.

NATO officials had no comment about the delay in Allen's appointment.

"We have seen Secretary Panetta's statement," NATO spokeswoman Carmen Romero said in Brussels. "It is a U.S. investigation."

Panetta also said he wants the Senate Armed Services Committee to act promptly on Obama's nomination of Gen. Joseph Dunford to succeed Allen as commander in Afghanistan. That nomination was made several weeks ago. Dunford's hearing is also scheduled for Thursday.

How to skip outgoing voicemail and automated phone systems

7 hrs.

The next time you make a phone call and are greeted with a machine (voicemail or automated phone system) instead of a person, save some time and get straight to your message or the extension you need to dial with these simple phone tips.

For voicemail: When you start to hear the outgoing message, press # and it should take you straight to the beep. (Tested and works on my phone.) Alternately, you can try * (should work for Verizon) or 7 for AT&T. When you find which one works for you, add the symbol to your contact's name in the phone book for future reference. [via Reddit]

For automated phone systems (IVRs): There are a number of strategies to quickly get you past the annoying prompts ("press 1 for your account balance, press 2 for directions, press 3..."). The first one is a pretty old technique we've covereda couple of times before and it works on all phones: In the address book for your contact, add a comma after the phone number you want to dial and then the extension or menu options (insert a comma between each menu option). Your phone will dial the number, pause, and then automatically enter the numbers after. (On some keypads, you get the comma by tapping the "pause" button or by holding down the +*= button.)

If that doesn't work, try the semicolon instead of the comma. This will make the phone "wait" for your keypress before dialing the extension. On the iPhone, if you save a contact with the wait semicolon and extension, when you dial the contact, you'll see a new "Dial [extension]" button.?

These tricks are handy if you dial numbers with extensions a lot, hate entering convoluted conference calling numbers, and just want to skip battling or waiting for phone systems.

Groupon revenue growth slows in 3Q, stock down

(AP) ? Groupon Inc., the No. 1 online deals service, failed to show investors on Thursday that its business is growing as quickly as they would like, as it was hurt by what it called "continued challenges" from the economic weakness in Europe.

The company booked a small loss in the third quarter as higher revenue wasn't enough to make up for stock compensation and other expenses. Though revenue grew by nearly a third, it was below Wall Street's expectations. The Chicago-based company's stock fell sharply in after-hours trading following the announcement, indicating that it'll likely open at its lowest level ever when regular trading starts on Friday.

Groupon's net loss was $3 million, or a breakeven per share, in the July-September period. A year ago it lost $54.2 million, or 18 cents per share. Groupon said adjusted earnings were 3 cents per share in the latest quarter, matching Wall Street's expectations.

Revenue grew to $569 million, below Wall Street's expectations of $591 million as surveyed by FactSet. In August, Groupon forecast revenue of $580 million to $620 million.

Groupon's growth rate has steadily declined: In the fourth quarter of 2011, in its first earnings report as a public company, Groupon said its revenue nearly tripled. That fell to 89 percent in the first quarter of this year, 45 percent in the second quarter and 32 percent in the third.

Slowing revenue growth is a problem that's plagued many of the young Internet companies that have gone public in the past year or so at valuations that can seem astronomically high in hindsight.

CEO Andrew Mason said weakness in Europe offset Groupon's "solid performance in North America" in the third quarter.

Gross billings, a closely watched figure that shows the total amount that customers spent on Groupon's deals, were at $1.22 billion, up 5 percent from a year earlier. Revenue is a subset of that because Groupon has to pay out the merchants offering the deals.

Groupon pioneered the online daily deals market, which offers subscribers deep discounts on everything from spa sessions to restaurant meals to toe fungus treatments. The model sparked a flood of copycats such as LivingSocial and Amazon Local. Together, deals flood online mailboxes multiple times a day.

To expand its business, Groupon has been trying to establish itself as a local e-commerce company, transforming the market the way Amazon.com Inc. transformed online retail. It launched a payments service in September that lets businesses accept credit card payments using their iPhone or iPod Touch. The company has also expanded to selling physical goods such as electronic gadgets, housewares and clothes.

Groupon had 39.5 million active customers as of the end of September, up 37 percent from a year earlier.

For the current quarter, Groupon is forecasting revenue of $625 million to $675 million. The midpoint of this, $650 million, is higher than the $634.9 million that analysts had expected.

Groupon's stock fell 62 cents, or nearly 16 percent, to $3.30 in after-hours trading Thursday. Groupon's stock made its public debut last November at a price of $20, but it has fallen sharply since amid concerns about the long-term viability of its business model and its ability to grow. The stock ended Thursday's regular-trading session at $3.92 and hit an all-time low of $3.68 a week ago, on Nov. 1.

Three financial tech start-ups to watch | Techgoondu

The financial industry may be in doldrums, but that has not stopped technology start-ups from coming up with innovative services targeted at banks and consumers.

At the inaugural FinovateAsia held at the Singapore Expo last Tuesday, 35 companies were given seven minutes each to showcase their wares that run the gamut from personal financial management to trading simulation.?Here are three young firms with products that stood out from the pack:

TradeHero
This is a Singapore-developed stock market simulation app that lets you hone your trading skills by following the trading actions of a community of virtual traders.

According to Gary Gan, business development director of MyManisku, the company behind TradeHero, the app?draws real-time data from 14 stock exchanges, 45,000 global securities, and 1,300 currency pairs.

Users are credited with a $100,000 starting portfolio and can make trades to create their own virtual portfolio. The app?s Leaderboard identifies the most successful traders known as ?Heroes? by their returns, and they are ranked by Exchange, Sector, Monthly or Quarterly returns, as well as overall returns.

For a small monthly fee, users can choose to ?follow? and receive?trade?feeds from their chosen Heroes via push notifications on their mobile devices. These push notifications detail each Buy and Sell action of the?Hero, allowing Followers to receive expert trading tips and personal insight into successful investment strategies. Subscription revenues are shared equally with Heroes, allowing expert traders to monetize their expertise.

?We envision an always-on global?TradeHero?community with?key market insights?being formulated and delivered, monetized and executed?globally on our mobile platform ??we see the entire world transformed into a?virtual trading floor,? Gan says.

MyManisku, which was founded in 2010, secured a grant from the Media Development Authority and the Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation in September 2011, followed by first-round seed funding from the National Research Foundation and TNF Ventures in August 2012.

TradeHero will be available from the Apple App Store in mid-November.

PerfectSen
Malaysia-based Perfectsen was founded late 2010 by a group of IT professionals with extensive background in software development for financial institutions. The company?s personal financial management (PFM) software lets banks incorporate financial management features in their online banking sites to build customer loyalty.

At FinovateAsia, the company unveiled The Hook, which lets banks place personalised ads to cross-sell and up-sell financial products that a customer may be interested in by mining his or her spending patterns, demographic profile and other attributes.

The ads can be easily installed with a single line of code on, say, a customer?s personal online banking portal. Think of it as a combination of Google AdSense, Adwords and Analytics for financial institutions.

Retaining a customer is said to be five times cheaper than acquiring a new one, so The Hook should go a long way to help banks reduce churn. The company is funded by the Malaysia?s Cradle Fund and counts MayBank as customers.

According to Perfectsen,?The Hook is hosted within the bank?s IT environment and compatible with most enterprise grade database and OS systems. Deployment takes between eight to 16 weeks, depending on the bank?s internal approvals, data availability and IT integration.

CurrencyFair
If you?ve ever exchanged currency and transferred funds to an overseas bank account, you would be aware of the hefty fees that banks charge for each transaction. CurrencyFair aims to reduce that middleman cost by letting you negotiate your own exchange rates with other users on the same service.

While CurrencyFair slashes the bank?s margin for forex transfers ? you still pay the bank for incoming and/or outgoing transfers ? ?you can save up to 90 per cent of the total cost of international fund transfers.

The service is easy to use. You start by depositing the funds you want to exchange into CurrencyFair?s bank account, so everyone on the platform is backed up with real cash. When you are ready to trade, enter the amount of currency you want to buy and/or sell through via two trading mechanisms: QuickTrade and MarketPlace.

In a QuickTrade, the platform offers you the best available rates put up by other users for the currency you want. Once the transaction goes through, you can send the currency to a bank account worldwide. If you want a better rate, put up your preferred rates on MarketPlace and wait for someone to match those rates.

The company has raised two million euros in equity funding and boasts of 10,000 registered users who have exchanged an average of over one million euros per day. Based?in Dublin, CurrencyFair is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland under the Europe-wide Payment Services Regulations 2009.
