Roots of rebellion: The noose that still dangles from the family ...

Our travels have taken us into the past again ? this time pretty far, 240 years or so, when my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather was captured, convicted for his role in a pre-Revolutionary War uprising and sentenced to die.

Five years before the American Revolution officially began ? under orders of North Carolina Royal Gov. William Tryon, being carried out by Col. Edmund Fanning ? grandpa James was placed atop a barrel (by most accounts) in Hillsborough, North Carolina. The noose of a rope secured to a tree limb was looped around his neck, and he was permitted a few last words.

Among the things James Pugh said, and the quote that still lingers ? it being a precursor of what Nathan Hale would later, and far more famously, utter from the gallows ? was this:

?The blood that we have shed will be as good seeds sown in good ground ? which soon shall reap a hundredfold!?

On the gallows, grandpa James ? and who could blame him for being verbose, given the circumstances ? reviewed the causes of the conflict he?d been captured during. He explained that the band of rebellious backwoods farmers he?d been swept up with, known as the Regulators, were seeking only a redress of grievances. And he reiterated the call for?an end to unfair taxation and local government corruption, especially in the sheriff?s office.

He had been granted 30 minutes to talk, which might be considered generous were it not for the sentence that was to be carried out when he finished, prescribed by the court thusly:

?That the prisoner should be carried to the place from whence he came, that he should be drawn from thence to the place of execution and hanged by the neck; that he should be cut down while yet alive; that his bowels should be taken out and burned before his face; that his head should be cut off, and that his body should be divided into four quarters, which were to be placed at the king?s disposal, and may the lord have mercy on your soul.?

Speaking from atop the barrel, and apparently still well within his 30-minute time limit, grandpa James worked in one last?verbal jab at Col.?Fanning ? a Yale-educated dandy (my words) ? calling him??unfit to hold any office.? Fanning, whose home had been ravaged by rioting Regulators the previous year, ordered a?soldier to kick over the barrel, snapping?grandpa James? neck in mid-sentence.

Whether the additional terms of his sentence were carried out ? the bowel burning and quartering and such ? seems lost to history. But grandpa James, who was convicted not of murder but of violating a government order aimed at quelling uprisings, was later buried, in whole or in parts, along the peaceful green banks of the Eno River, along with five other Regulators captured and hung?after what?s known as the Battle of Alamance.

Fortunately ? for me anyway ? great (times eight) grandpa James had already sown his personal seeds by then, or at least the one from which I, many generations later, would sprout.

I did not learn of grandpa James until I was in my 40?s, which is maybe a good thing because it would not have made for a nice bedtime story.

Once I did, I began researching, sporadically, the history of the Regulators, who over the centuries have been viewed as everything from outlaws to heroes to hillbillies to the true instigators of what would become the Revolutionary War. There are some who have described the bloodshed at the Battle of Alamance ? grandpa James being responsible for much of that spillage ? as that war?s first battle.

That, I?ve concluded, despite it being engraved on at least one historical marker, is a bit of a stretch. Historical markers, like the Internet,? are not to be trusted.

My family connection with a pre-Revolutionary revolutionary, a rabble rouser?before it became cool,?has prompted some personal speculation.

I don?t put much stock in genes being the force that primarily shape us ? at least not when it comes to our hearts (in the non-organic sense) and minds and personalities ? yet still I?ve wondered if grandpa James might be the source of my rebellious streak, my disdain for bureaucracies and my belief that public disturbances are often OK, because sometimes the public needs a good disturbing.

Might it explain ? even though it existed long before I heard of him ? my opposition to capital punishment, not to mention decapitation and bowel burning?

Did I inherit his tendency to go on too long, even if in my case that?s limited to the written word?

Or, conversely, might his abrupt demise ? that rudest of interruptions ? be the reason I don?t talk too much? I think not, since learned experiences aren?t passed on through genes (despite what pit bull haters may say), especially those lessons learned a millisecond before, or at the time of death.

Most of all, as I look at the family tree, nooses and all, I wonder: Do I come from righteous activist stock, or rowdy outlaw stock, or is the line between those two sometimes so thin that its hard to separate one from the other? Was great-times-eight grandpa a felon, or folk hero?

Chance of U.S. recession rises to 1-in-4: Reuters poll (Reuters)

WASHINGTON, Aug 9 (Reuters) ? The United States faces one-in-four odds of slipping back into recession, and a weaker economic outlook is raising the likelihood the Federal Reserve will soon do more to boost growth, a Reuters poll shows.

The world's biggest economy is still expected to pick up in the second half of the year as it shakes off high gasoline prices and factory disruptions created by Japan's earthquake in March, according to the monthly survey of more than 70 economists.

But recession fears have risen substantially in recent weeks. Stocks on the S&P 500 (.SPX) plunged more than 6 percent on Monday after Standard & Poor's downgraded U.S. sovereign debt late on Friday, further threatening consumer confidence.

Just two weeks ago, economists saw the chances of another recession at one-in-five. Now they see it at one-in-four.

The poll, taken as world stock markets staged their biggest fall since the dark days of the financial crisis in 2008 , showed lower growth expectations for the rest of this year.

Analysts slashed forecasts for the third quarter, bringing down the consensus by 0.8 percentage point to an annualized 2.3 percent, from 3.1 percent in the July poll.

"Weak stock markets, negative wealth effects and weak labor markets ... mean we're not going to see a quick recover y in the second half of the year," said Mark Miller, senior international economist at Lloyds Banking Group.

Thirty-five of 41 analysts who participated in the August and July polls have downgraded their forecasts for Q3 GDP.

Of the 13 primary dealers who contributed to this poll and the previous poll, all but one has downgraded their forecast.

While 2.3 percent growth would be an improvement over the paltry 1.3 percent growth in the second quarter, it would still indicate a vulnerable economy.

Analysts gave a 30 percent chance the U.S. central bank would launch a third round of bond purchases, or quantitative easing (QE3), within the next year.

Seven of 40 economists now see at least a 50 percent chance of more QE, compared with just one of 46 in a poll taken two months ago. The Federal Open Market Committee will announce its latest policy statement on Tuesday.

Fed officials expect growth to pick up substantially this quarter, and so far have appeared unlikely to consider a third round of quantitative easing.

"QE3 depends on how confident the Fed is in their own forecast," said Wells Fargo economist John Silvia.

However, analysts increasingly doubt that. Two months ago, the median probability polled for QE3 was just 15 percent.

Over the full year, analysts in the Reuters poll expected growth of 1.8 percent, below the Fed's forecast of up to 2 .9 percent and close to what some economists consider stall speed.

Economists' inflation expectations were relatively stable, edging down to 3.0 percent for 2011. In the July poll, analysts expected 3.1 percent inflation for the year.

The consensus for growth in the core consumer price index -- which strips out volatile food and energy prices -- tic ked higher to 1.6 percent for 2011, up from 1.5 percent.

That should leave the Fed with plenty of room to keep interest rates at record lows near zero well into next year.

Poll respondents again pushed back their expectations for when interest rates will rise. The Fed is expected to hold

them through the end of 2012. Previously, the consensus was for a rise in the second quarter.

More opinions from Mike Repole Alicia Wincze on horse racing

Due to space constraints, a good chunk of reaction from owner Mike Repole with regard to Wednesday?s announcement that the Breeders? Cup was heading back to Santa Anita in 2012 didn?t make the print edition of today?s paper. Since Repole?s words are always interesting - whether one agrees with him or not - here are some more tidbits from the man himself as he is never shy about giving his opinion on the state of racing.

Following up on some of the comments he made to my esteemed fellow turf writer Jason Shandler of Bloodhorse.com on his blog (visit? http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/breeders-cup-chat/archive/2011/08/09/repole-sounds-off.aspx? if you haven?t already read it), I asked Repole if he thought proposed move to ban Lasix was driven more by a desire to improve Thoroughbred racing?s public perception than it is to improve the sport as a whole. In response, he said the following:

Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

?You know what, if that?s their concern and they know Lasix is good for a horse, shame on them. I would hope it?s not a perception thing and that it is a reality thing. But everything I hear from trainers to vets supports it. It?s like no one is for this except the good old boys and they?re the guys who have been killing the sport for the last 10-15 years. It?s time for them to step aside.?

Repole?s dismay over the Breeders? Cup decision and medication issues have been well documented and one of his major points of frustration is the fact there is no governing head of the sport for people like him to seek out to express their concerns.

?A guy like Mike Repole can?t go to someone like (NBA commissioner) David Stern and say ?Hey, can we talk this over?,? he said. ?There are a bunch of these old school regimes that constantly?doesn?t want to embrace change in the sport. The sport is in enough trouble right now that all they?re doing is accelerating the issues.

Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

?It?s very hard for me to sit back and watch us make mistakes and shoot ourselves in the foot in this industry.?

Lest anyone think Repole?s media rounds in the last couple days are just full of venting, he also took the time to acknowledge he is in a pretty sweet spot as an owner. In addition to having juvenile champion Uncle Mo on the comeback trail from a liver ailment and pointing for the Grade I King?s Bishop at Saratoga on August 27, he also has Jim Dandy Stakes winner Stay Thirsty on track for that day?s main event, the $1 million Travers, and a leading 2-year-old in Sanford winner Overdriven.

?Four months ago, I didn?t know if (Uncle Mo) was going to survive,? Repole said. ?So that we?re even talking about pointing to a race with him and that we?re even talking about him having a great work this week is amazing. I get so much enjoyment from my horses. The only time Stay Thirsty and Uncle Mo have run on the same day was the Breeders? Cup Juvenile when they ran against each other so that was a different feeling. To have these horses running on Travers day, one at 5:15 and one at 5:45 p.m. that?s going? to be a fun, exciting hour for Repole Stable. I know how lucky I am.?

Overdriven missed a scheduled workout earlier this week when trainer Todd Pletcher said he didn?t warm up to his liking but Repole said the colt checked out clear and is still slated to make his next start in the Hopeful Stakes on September 5 in Saratoga.

Kitchen Renovation Guide | Home Improvement Remodeling

With all of the possible upgrades and unexpected problems that can arise in a home remodeling project, it is really easy for your budget to spiral out of control. By following a few simple rules, you can avoid those headaches. Here are some things to think about?even before you begin your remodeling project.

1) Anticipate Your Budget Going Over- 9 times out of 10, your remodeling project is going to go over budget because of unexpected expenses. Regardless of which room you decide to remodel, you will typically find your ultimate cost to be about 25 percent higher than your original estimate. The same 25 percent figure also applies to the amount of time it will take to complete the project.

For example, if you have decided to spend $10,000 to remodel your kitchen and give yourself five weeks to finish the job, you can generally expect to end up spending about $12,500 and seven weeks on the project. There are no hard-and-fast rules, but one thing experienced remodeling professionals have learned?always expect the unexpected.

2) Research Everything- Do lots of research concerning the materials you will be using and the specifications of each product. Go to your home improvement store to get test paint color samples. They should be knowledgable about current trends and the latest products on the market. Don?t assume that the big box stores are going to have the best prices. Even though they have the buying power, you can find the same extra products online for a lot less because they don?t have the overhead of the retail stores.

3) Don?t Put Off The Small Items- Once you?ve decided on your main components, don?t forget to spend time on the small things, as well. It?s easy to get caught up focusing on the big ticket items, but it?s often the interior design details, like trim, accent colors, and hardware that really make a remodeling project come to life.

4) Anticipate Problems and Delays- Inevitably with every project you are going to run into scheduling problems and design flaws. Keep in mind that no two renovation projects are going to be the same, so even experienced renovators are you?re going to make mistakes. Odds are you?re going to change your mind and do things somewhat differently than you had originally planned, and you?re going to run into things that you hadn?t anticipated.

5) Higher Price Doesn?t Always Mean Higher Quality- This is where the research comes in. For some materials you are only paying for the brand name. Kitchen Cabinets is the perfect example. By researching different cabinet manufacturers and distributors, you will often find that some of the lower priced cabinets offer the same quality at a more affordable price. Other materials, such as windows and basic supplies will generally reflect the quality in their price. Focus on quality and use the best quality of materials you can afford.

Overall, remodeling can be a rewarding experience, if you just follow a few simple rules and use common sense along the way. Whether it will be your first project or you have several under your belt, these rules will apply for all your renovation projects.

I have been remodeling houses and rental properties for over 15 years. I have discovered the secret to saving thousands on kitchen cabinets. Find out my secret to buying kitchen cabinets at 30-40% below retail.

(AP) ? A stand by Wisconsin Republicans against a massive effort to oust them from power could reverberate across the country as the battle over union rights and the conservative revolution heads toward the 2012 presidential race.

Democrats succeeded in taking two Wisconsin state Senate seats away from Republican incumbents on Tuesday but fell one short of what they needed to seize majority control of the chamber.

Republicans saw it as a big win for Gov. Scott Walker and a confirmation of his conservative agenda, the hallmark of which was a polarizing proposal taking away most collective bargaining rights from public workers.

"Republicans are going to continue doing what we promised the people of Wisconsin ? improve the economy and get Wisconsin moving back in the right direction," Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said in a prepared statement after the victory.

Walker attempted to strike a bipartisan tone in victory, saying that he reached out to leaders in both parties.

"In the days ahead I look forward to working with legislators of all parties to grow jobs for Wisconsin and move our state forward," Walker said in a prepared statement.

Democrats and union leaders tried to make the best of the historic GOP wins. There had been only 13 other successful recalls of state-level office holders nationwide since 1913.

"The fact of the matter remains that, fighting on Republican turf, we have begun the work of stopping the Scott Walker agenda," said Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate.

Phil Neuenfeldt, president of the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO, said voters sent a message that there is a growing movement to reclaim the middle class.

"Let's be clear, anyway you slice it, this is an unprecedented victory," he said.

Still, it was far less than what Democrats set out to achieve. And while they still plan to move ahead with recalling Walker, maintaining momentum for that effort which can't start until November will be difficult.

Sen. Luther Olsen, one of the four Republicans who won, said he hoped the victories would "take the wind out of the recall for Walker, but I'm not sure."

Two Democratic senators face recall elections next week, but even if they prevail, Republicans would still hold a narrow 17-16 majority.

Four Republican senators held on to their seats Tuesday. They were Olsen and Sens. Sheila Harsdorf of River Falls, Rob Cowles of Allouez, and Alberta Darling of River Hills. Two Republicans ? Randy Hopper of Fond du Lac and Dan Kapanke of La Crosse ? were defeated. Former deputy mayor of Oshkosh Jessica King beat Hopper and Democratic state Rep. Jennifer Shilling beat Kapanke.

A ninth senator, Democrat Dave Hansen of Green Bay, won his recall election last month.

Collectively, more than $31 million has been spent on the recalls, largely from outside conservative groups, unions and others.

Republican and Democratic strategists were leery of reading too much into the results heading into next year's campaign in which Wisconsin is expected to be a key swing state.

Democratic strategist Chris Lehane said the results could provide "some early radar warnings" about the 2012 races.

"At a minimum, we already know that the conservatives are providing energy for progressive to fight back like an angry badger that otherwise may not have existed," he said.

Lehane said Wisconsin's tumultuous year since November's elections has been a microcosm of the current "rollercoaster" era of U.S. politics.

Wisconsin voters had mixed emotions about the necessity of the recalls.

Wayne Boland, 41, a Whitefish Bay man who works in marketing for a medical equipment maker, said he voted for the Republican Darling "not because I entirely agree with everything the Republican Party has done or the governor" but because they're working toward addressing the state's problems.

Republicans won control of both houses of the Legislature and the governor's office in the 2010 election just nine months ago.

Democrats had hoped enough wins in the recalls would have allowed them to block the Republican agenda, but the GOP will hold on to their majorities that have allowed them to rapidly pass bills through the Legislature.

The elections were also closely watched in other states undergoing similar partisan battles.

A coalition of unions and labor-friendly groups fighting a Wisconsin-style collective bargaining overhaul in Ohio said the outcome of the recall elections will have little bearing on whether Ohio's law is repealed this fall.

The effort in Wisconsin was about recalling specific Republicans who voted for the anti-union bill while the push in Ohio is about repealing the law itself. That makes it difficult to compare the two states, said We Are Ohio spokeswoman Melissa Fazekas.

Supporters of the Ohio law also are distancing their state from the fight in Wisconsin.

"We're not focused on Wisconsin, and Ohioans aren't looking to another state to tell them where they should stand," said Jason Mauk, spokesman for Building a Better Ohio, a group defending the collective bargaining law.

Ohioans will vote Nov. 8 on whether to accept or reject the union-limiting law signed by Republican Gov. John Kasich in March that limits bargaining rights for more than 350,000 police, firefighters, teachers and other government employees.

Unlike Wisconsin, Ohio's Constitution makes no provision for recalling elected officials.

Tampa Real Estate Market ?Moves? Out of A ?Buyer's Market? In The ...

Tampa Real Estate Market Update?

For several years, the Tampa Real Estate Market has seen prices slip, anywhere from 20 percent to 50%, over the ?height of the market? in 2006. This variation really depends on the neighborhood in the Tampa area, but virtually every property is worth less today, than in 2006.

In the past few months, we have seen the resurgence of ?multiple offers?, which is an indication that the ?Buyer?s market? in Tampa is coming to an end. Homes that are well-priced, in good school districts, are getting multiple offers as soon as they come on the market, or as soon as they get a price reduction, which reflects current pricing in the neighborhood. Most Builders, who had plenty of ?inventory? of new homes, either completed, or under construction, are OUT of inventory. I spoke to one builder recently, who has sold over 50 new homes in a 5 mile radius this year and can?t keep up with the demand! If you are looking for a new home, please let me know. Most of the new construction is not listed, so unless you are working with an agent, it is difficult to find. Just send me an email, and I am happy to help.

The ?good news? in the Tampa Real Estate Market, is three-fold: Tampa Real Estate Prices are at the bottom, Mortgage Rates are under 5% AND homes that are priced right are selling quickly!

In my 17 years in the Tampa Real Estate Market, I have seen the ?highs and lows? of prices and interest rates. This year is the ?Best of the Best??Low Price and Low Rates! Contact me today for more information about the Tampa Real Estate Market, Best Tampa Neighborhoods, or Tampa Schools. With many of the top-rated schools in the US, Tampa is a great place for families.

For information on any neighborhood in Tampa, homes in the highly-rated school districts, or if you are relocating to Tampa, please contact me. It?s a ?Buyer?s Market? in Tampa! If you would like to receive listings in a certain neighborhood, or price range, just let me know!
