95-year-old man stung 600 times by bees

A 95-year-old Redondo Beach man attacked by bees Wednesday afternoon was stung up to 600 times.

The man was hospitalized in stable condition Wednesday night. An earlier report indicated he was treated and released, but the man's daughter confirmed to NBC4 that he remained hospitalized Thursday morning in Torrance.

Authorities said they could not confirm whether the bees are Africanized bees, but said it is likely.

The bees were agitated by a fumigator that was trying to exterminate the hive in an apartment roof nearby, police said. The man was walking in the 1700 block of Ruxton Lane when he was attacked.

Firefighters responding to the scene also were attacked by the bees, but because they were wearing protective gear, the firefighters were not stung.

The Los Angeles Vector Control set up warning signs and cordoned off the area. No one was evacuated.

A private exterminator is expected to remove the hive.

Under fire, N.Y. AG wins plaudits in mortgage probe (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The New York attorney general's booting from a panel of state officials negotiating a settlement of mortgage abuses may shore up his political base and enforcement agenda.

Eric Schneiderman's resistance to a possible $25 billion settlement being negotiated with the largest mortgage servicers has already drawn praise from groups representing minorities and organized labor.

"Anybody who takes on the banks is a hero," political consultant Hank Sheinkopf said. "Whether he gets anything done is another story. In politics, it's not what you do, it's how you do it."

On Tuesday, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announced the removal of Schneiderman from the committee of state officials that has been working with federal agencies to address "robosigning" and other shortcuts that banks took in their haste to remove borrowers from their homes.

The states and the departments of Justice and Housing and Urban Development have been negotiating for months with Bank of America (BAC.N), JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N), Citigroup (C.N), Wells Fargo (WFC.N) and Ally Financial.

Miller said Schneiderman "actively worked to undermine" the state coalition. The New York Times has reported that federal officials pressured Schneiderman to drop his opposition.

The New York attorney general, a Democrat, has objected to any agreement that gives banks a broad release from claims by investors who bought securities backed by home loans that soured.

A spokesperson for Schneiderman said he is "committed to a comprehensive resolution that will provide homeowners meaningful relief to stay in their homes, allow the housing market to begin to recover, and get our economy moving again."

MORE SUPPORT

On Wednesday, a day after Miller announced his removal, Schneiderman won support for his stance from a variety of national and state organizations, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations.

In a letter to government officials leading the mortgage investigation, including Miller, they said the group should not be pressured into a deal that does not adequately address the harm done.

"We understand that industry is pressuring to limit relief and for overly broad releases; they must not be allowed to succeed," they said. "To the extent that institutions or individuals committed illegal acts, there have to be consequences for breaking the law that are in proportion to the seriousness of the violations."

OBSTRUCTIONIST? "BEYOND FRIVOLOUS"

Some government officials would prefer to have a deal soon that could provide relief to homeowners and stabilize the housing market.

But the public may not view Schneiderman as an obstructionist.

"Most of the people aren't going to see it that way," said Sheinkopf. "They're going to see it as 'good guy takes on big banks'."

Schneiderman took office in January and is up for re-election in November 2014.

Eliot Spitzer, a former New York attorney general known for his successes in fighting Wall Street, said it is "beyond frivolous" to suggest that Schneiderman is causing delays.

Spitzer blamed the federal government for years of lax regulation, and not driving a harder bargain with banks.

"They have given the banks everything they wanted and gotten nothing back," he said. "Eric Schneiderman is properly demanding negotiating position and requiring the banks to disclose more, to leave them open to inquiries related to areas that have not been sufficiently investigated before signing onto a broad waiver."

New York had last October been named to join an executive committee leading the state coalition.

Miller said he invited Schneiderman's office in June to be part of a smaller negotiating committee, but Schneiderman declined, indicating he "would possibly pursue a different direction."

Josh Rosner, an independent financial services consultant at Graham Fisher & Co, said Schneiderman's being dropped from the committee may have little impact.

"To have a 50-state settlement, Schneiderman's concerns are going to have to be addressed," he said.

VMA Black-Carpet Pre-Show Designer Promises Dramatic Entrances

Celebrities will arrive via a musical portal in the lobby of the J.W. Marriott hotel in Los Angeles, production designer Scott Storey tells us.

VMA pre-show production designer Scott Storey didn't want to repeat his past triumphs when putting together his vision for the 2011 VMA pre-show, so he threw out the playbook entirely.

Rather than serve up the same-old same-old "step and repeat" entrance, where stars walk down a red carpet and pose for photographers in front of a wall with a logo and sponsor names, he came up with a series of giant undulating, rib-cage-like towers that would do something you'd never seen before. "I wanted something that would 'hug' the talent, to feel as if they are going, again, through a tunnel."

With the show just two days away, Storey's visionary idea was coming into place, as production crews hauled the giant white wave forms into the lobby of the J.W. Marriott hotel in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday night.

Watch the black-carpet live stream to see the action as it unfolds!

To contrast the soft, rolling towers, Storey then laid the angular, sharp-edged 2011 VMA logo on top. "What sort of worked out nicely for us is, while everything has been very curvy and organic, this logo it couldn't be more sharp and angular and just a polar opposite ... so it makes a very nice contrast," he said.

But before they get to the step and repeat, the stars will make a grand entrance through a futuristic-looking space portal in the lobby of hotel, a welcome indoor awards show walk that will protect them from the harsh late-summer sunlight.

"We have this big portal entrance, this really exciting dramatic entrance," he said of the space-age series of curvy openings that will usher the night's VIPs into the spotlight. "The headline talent will make entrances down this shell-shaped organic-feeling portal."

After chatting with Sway, they'll stroll past the towers and end up in a paparazzi "plaza," where a group of sanctioned snappers will take their pictures as they make their way to the big show. The Emmy-winning designer said it sounds like a lot of moving parts, but swears that for viewers at home it will feel totally "seamless."

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

2 Norwegians attempt jailbreak in Congo (AP)

KINSHASA, Congo ? A Congolese prison official says that two Norwegians who have been condemned to death were caught attempting to escape via a tunnel they had dug on the prison grounds.

Prison chaplain David Mbembi said by telephone from the prison in Kisangani Friday that the two were caught by another prisoner Wednesday night who reported them to authorities. The hole that Tjostolv Moland and Joshua French had dug would have taken them out of the prison via the prison's pharmacy.

In 2010, a Kisangani court convicted Moland and French, who is also a British citizen, of espionage and the 2009 murder of a local driver. They have written to Congolese President Joseph Kabila requesting a pardon.

There have been no executions in Congo since Kabila came to power in 2001.

Personal Finance Tips for Students ? Debit versus Credit

As a student the last thing on your mind is probably personal finance, and related personal finance tips & advice. Nonetheless while you are in your 20?s you are at a critical point in your life and following personal finance tips for students is something you?ll wish you?d done when you are older. I guarantee it. So if you are one of the more than 14 million students currently attending college in the United States (or a student attending college outside of the U.S.) then the following personal finance tips are for you. For those who?ve already graduated keep on reading as well, you might just find something that will benefit you as well!

Use the library

One amazing resource that you have at your full disposal as a student is your school?s library. If it?s like most college/university libraries out there then you?ll have a couple of neat things to take advantage of. The first, and possibly the biggest money saver, is free WiFi. Most school?s will offer this, so if you live close enough or are able to spend enough time on campus you can take advantage of the schools internet and save yourself upwards of $30 a month.

Need a textbook or research materials? There?s a big chance that your school offers free access to these materials for you, so if you only need a textbook for a few days out of the semester, why buy it when you can borrow it?

This isn?t something that?s likely offered at your school library, but it?s pretty likely available at your public library: movies and music. So if you need some entertainment and don?t want to cough up the dough for a Redbox or Netflix rental head down to your local library and check out their music and movie selection.

Be smart with textbooks

One of the largest expenses you?ll have as a college student is the cost of your textbooks every semester. If you buy them new (and depending on your course load) you could easily spend upwards of $700 for textbooks alone. That?s a pretty major expense and one that, if you can, would be wise to cut in half or even more. Here?s how:

Rent your textbook. Google the phrase ?rent textbooks? and you?ll find plenty of options. If your book isn?t available for some reason see if you can check it out from your school library (they?ll usually have a couple copies of textbooks on hand) and if all else fails and you have to buy it then be smart about that as well. Don?t bother buying new if possible, get it used from amazon, check Craigslist or Google the ISBN number for your textbook and see what you can find.

Another thing you should try (if possible) is selling your textbooks back to the school bookstore (or on Craigslist or amazon if you can get more) after the semester is over. This way you can reduce the out of pocket expense for the next semester?s textbook cost. Also if you can sell your books back before the end of the semester you might get a bit more back for them than if you wait until the semester is over.

Throw your ID around

Put that student ID in your wallet and make sure you always have it with you, because you can get some serious discounts with that magical little card. From food to movies to MacBooks, the discounts are a plenty.

student idDiscounts on electronics & software

Looking to get yourself a MacBook or an iPad for use at school? Great news! Apple offers a pretty decent discount on just about all of their hardware products. You can see said discounts on Apple?s online store or stop in to your local Apple store (or university bookstore if they sell Apple products) and ask about the student discount. You should also check out Academic Superstore online for pretty substantial discounts on many of your favorite software programs (Windows, Office, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.).

Discounts on entertainment

Love movies? Of course you do. Check with your local theatre to see if they offer a student discount. Most movie theatres will, and unless you?ve only got one theatre within 5-15 miles of you there?s a good chance that a theatre that?s close enough will offer a fairly substantial discount on tickets (we?re talking $6 bucks a movie instead of $10).

Some other great places that will typically offer student discounts include museums, live theatre, comedy shows, concerts, etc. There?s a lot of discount giving going on out there in the world of entertainment so make sure you ask!

Discounts on food

Check with the local eateries near your college campus, as there is a pretty high chance that they offer discounts on food to students. Check your school newsletters as well as bulletin boards on and around campus for other restaurants/eateries offering student discounts. Finally if you stop by a chain (McDonalds, etc) ask if they offer a student discounts. It can?t hurt to ask and the worst they can say is no.

Discounts on services

You?ve got to be prepared for Spring Break at all times, so if you?re getting out of shape check with your school to see if they have a fitness center/gym. There?s a pretty good chance they do and an even better chance that it?s free (or at the very least seriously discounted).

Moral of the story? Ask around everywhere you go to see if they have a student discount. There?s a good chance they might have one.

Be smart with credit

Your credit history will carry with you for a long time and the sooner you can get yourself into a routine with good financial habits, the better. Therefore, your early 20?s and the college years are a critical time to really work on building an excellent credit history. For more information on credit (and your credit score) please check out How Your Credit Score Defines You.

It goes without saying that banks and credit card companies love college students. They really try to capture your business early on and by doing so often will offer some sort of incentive for even applying for their credit card. Don?t fall for this deception. Just because XYZ bank is handing out free tshirts if you sign up for their credit card doesn?t mean that you should do it. Avoid these offers, and if you just must have whatever SWAG they are giving out then remember to promptly close the card once you receive it in the mail (and destroy it properly).

If you trust yourself not to go overboard then consider charging all of your necessary living expenses on a credit card and then pay your bill in full at the end of each month. By paying in full at the end of every month you?ll avoid interest charges and you?ll be building a good credit history as well as teaching yourself discipline. That said it?s not likely worth it to do this unless you have a card that offers rewards.

Finally, if possible avoid taking out student loans. Sure it?s cheap to finance your education, especially with subsidized loans, but take it from me it?s not fun to have to pay off your education years after you got your diploma. Not to mention that student loans can be crippling and possibly even prevent you from being able to take on a dream job.

Protect your belongings

You might not have a lot of stuff yet, but it?s still important to protect your belongings. If your apartment burnt to the ground how would you replace all of your clothes, your computer, etc? My recommendation is to always carry a renters insurance policy. These can cost as little as $5 a month (one less latte) and will provide peace of mind, and we all know you can?t put a price on that.? :-)

Don?t neglect scholarships/grants

There are a lot of scholarships and grants available out there, all you have to do is look for them. Do yourself a favor and check with your school?s financial aid department to see what is available to you as a student. Also do a quick search online to see what else is available. One caveat to searching online: there are many companies that claim they will find you money in scholarships and charge a fee to do so. While they may very well be a legitimate company I?d recommend avoiding them as you can certainly find the information on your own and for free.

Consider using a community college for your first two years

Community Colleges are quite a bit cheaper than your local university and in most cases offer a comparable education. My advice is to do your first two years of higher education at a community college and then transfer to a university to finish your degree. By doing so you?ll save thousands of dollars and still get an excellent education!

That?s all I?ve got for today. There are plenty of resources you should check out as hyperlinks on this blog post so make sure you do that as well. Also for those who will be graduating soon (or for recent graduates) check out 5 Must Read Tips for New Graduates. Do you have any additional money saving tips for students? Internet war of words breaks out in Miss. killing (AP)

JACKSON, Miss. ? Authorities call it a hate crime by two white teens against a middle-aged black man, "murder by physically assaulting and purposefully using a 1998 Ford F-250 to run over James Craig Anderson."

Defense lawyers insist the incident had nothing to do with race. One of the teen's attorneys said the group was on a beer run that morning, not out looking for a black man to assault, as prosecutors claim.

Regardless of whether race had anything to do with the killing, that's how it's being seen by many who live far away from Mississippi's capital. Stoked in part by security camera footage showing Anderson being run over, people across the country have begun to sound off on social media pages created for and against the defendants, filling them with shrill, often hateful comments.

Pages have been set up to solicit prayers for the victim and one of the suspects, but the posts have become more heated since the surveillance video was made public. Another Web page calls for the executions of Deryl Dedmon and John Aaron Rice, who were 18 when the 49-year-old Anderson was run down on a Jackson street just before dawn on June 26.

Both were both initially charged with murder, though the charge against Rice was reduced to simple assault after a detective testified Rice left the scene in a separate vehicle before Anderson was run down.

The ACLU of Mississippi said it is monitoring the investigation.

"The murder of James Craig Anderson was a cowardly act of violence that reminds us of the racial hatred that continues to plague the South," said Nsombi Lambright, the ACLU's executive director for Mississippi.

Despite the angry, racially tinged rhetoric posted by blacks and whites alike, the situation could provoke level-headed discussions about race relations, said Gerald Rose, founder of the Atlanta-based New Order National Human Rights Organization. His group and others are planning a trip this month to the scene of Anderson's death.

Rose said people from California to Virginia have contacted him about Anderson's death.

"When I saw the video, I shed tears. That could have been me or it could have been my sons," said Rose, who is black. "We want to call for a healing process, and at the same time we are aware racism is still alive. I can't believe stuff like this is going on in the year 2011."

The surveillance video, obtained by The Associated Press and other media, shows a white Jeep in which Rice was allegedly a passenger leaving a hotel parking lot at 5:05 a.m.

Less than 20 seconds later, a Ford truck backs up and then lunges forward. Anderson's shirt is illuminated in the headlights before he disappears under the vehicle next to the curb. The Metro Inn provided Jackson police with the video, which prosecutors say has been vital in the investigation.

The video also shows hotel staff and guests hurrying to the street to help Anderson. Some of them paced back and forth in apparent disbelief while calling police on their cell phones. None of the people allegedly involved in the incident was a hotel guest.

Dedmon is charged as the driver of the green Ford F-250. He's being held in the Hinds County jail on an $800,000 bond. Rice posted a $5,000 bond and was released, though Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith said a grand jury expected to meet in the coming weeks could still indict Rice on a murder charge.

If convicted of a hate crime, the teens' sentences could be increased. Attorneys for both dispute that their clients were involved in a racially motivated attack.

Dedmon's attorney, Lee Agnew, said during a court hearing in July that he had seen nothing to back up the "racial allegations." Agnew did not respond to messages left this week by the AP.

Rice's lawyer, Samuel Martin, declined to comment this week. During a bond hearing last month, Martin suggested during a line of questioning with a police detective that Rice had no knowledge of any plan to indiscriminately attack a black man.

Jackson Police Detective Eric Smith testified that Dedmon had been robbed by a black man in the weeks before Anderson's death and was looking for "some sort of revenge" when the group left a party in Rankin County, allegedly in search of a random black person "to mess with." Seven people headed to Jackson in two cars, with Dedmon and Rice in separate vehicles.

The district attorney has said racial slurs were used during the attack and that Dedmon later bragged that he "just ran that n----- over."

But during the hearing in July, Martin suggested the teens went to Jackson to buy beer because it isn't sold that late in Rankin County ? not to look for a black man. Martin pointed out that Rice wasn't in the truck and that he wasn't at the scene when Anderson was hit. The line of questioning also revealed that no witness at that time had said Rice was the one using racial slurs.

The detective testified that Rice was a passenger in a white Jeep that arrived first at the hotel, which is just off Interstate 20 and next to a Wendy's. Smith said Rice saw Anderson near a car and thought he was trying to break into it. Instead, police said, Anderson had locked his keys inside his own vehicle.

Rice told authorities he tried to help Anderson get into the vehicle, but the detective said an altercation took place when Dedmon arrived.

"All of the evidence shows that, in fact, (Rice) was trying to help Mr. Anderson prior to Deryl Dedmon getting there," Martin said during the hearing.

"Yes, sir," the detective replied.

The detective said four people got out of the vehicles before the fight with Anderson, though he said only Rice and Dedmon assaulted him. The officer said Rice punched Anderson, knocking him down, before Dedmon attacked the dazed man.

Rice's lawyer disputes that his client was the instigator.

Dedmon was pulled over on Interstate 20 in Rankin County later that morning. Rice was arrested a few days later. Authorities have not ruled out that others at the scene could be charged.
