2012 and All That ? an offer Olympics - recreation-sports

The day was 6 July 2005. Raffles City Convention Centre in Singapore was the venue. The special occasion was the 117 th Ordinary Session of the IOC (International Olympic Committee). The purpose was to meet and vote for the city to the modern Olympic Games Summer XXX host.

At first it had to struggle to keep nine cities of the Olympic Games in 2012. On 18 May 2004, reduced the five major candidates. Havana, Istanbul, Leipzig andRio de Janeiro were ineffective in their efforts to influence the technical evaluation and were excluded from the proceedings to continue.

Five names were submitted on the last voting mechanism. The cities were chosen for the decisive verdict in London, Madrid, Moscow, New York and Paris. Of these, brought the influence of Paris, the city was more likely.

Thus, the fateful day arrived in 2005 and the IOC met in Singapore on a decision that would agree to bring theenormous impact on the budget.

The approach is based. Each of the 104 eligible participants who had attended a consecutive series of votes held by secret ballot. After each round of voting if no candidate city had the majority of the votes cast received the final, the city with the fewest votes would be closed and a vote will take place next.

Anxious after a few rounds, three challengers have emerged to vote than high hopes from the five nominees. London, Madrid and Paris. Moscow hadfell at the first hurdle and New York was eliminated after the second ballot.

In contrast to the fact that Madrid and London also interviewed voices a bit "more than Paris in the first two rounds were, was the French capital is still regarded by many as favorite considered the ultimate price to get. Due to the number of electoral behavior of some delegates The IOC, in the next phase of the vote in last year in Madrid, where the race was conducted in the second ballot with 32 votes, was stopped only 31 electoral votes. The leftLondon to Paris in the final vote face.

The hypothesis of widespread press and professional guess is that Paris "had in his pocket."

Offer in London had been as many positive elements in the reports of the IOC in 2004 and 2005 produced were investigated. But the general opinion in the various committees of the IOC Evaluation Commission that Paris was in front of his opponent cross-channel.

Shareholders also seemed against Great Britain. Offers preventiveBirmingham (1992) and twice from Manchester (1996 and 2000) were all failed pretty bad. Given that Paris had for the Olympic Games in 1992 and again in 2008 when he finished third behind Beijing supports hot favorites. The general feeling in the run-up to the 117 th Session of the IOC was that Paris had to offer was triumphant.

The final decision is now history. Team GB celebrate at the convention center are more in step with wild shouts of joy by a large amountView the proceedings live on the big screen built in Trafalgar Square in London. The location of the home crowd was perhaps predictive ? the Battle of Trafalgar, perhaps the most famous British victories over their opponents for a long time.

Thus London is the first city to have the privilege to host the modern Olympic Games three times had the privilege in the summer of 1908 and 1948.

But what will be the eventual financialLast of London and its taxpayers?

But when the games are seen in the light of history is certainly a question: Who will end up paying for the Olympic Games London 2012 cost?

Can the British capital the company, the unusual trick to do to a modern Olympic Games and a realistic profit from it? Or will a legacy of guilt long after the visual splendor of the sport, which we certainly expect in the fall of 2012?

New Lows Visit 30-Year and 15-Year Mortgage Rates | Real Estate ...

By Ryan Schuette

With refinancing activity continuing a backslide, the number of homebuyers filing mortgage applications waxed over last week, falling by 4.9 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to a weekly survey by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA). The trade group recorded new lows for 30-year and 15-year loan contract interest rates.

According to the MBA?s Market Composite Index, a yardstick for mortgage loan applications nationally, numbers declined by a seasonally unadjusted 5.3 percent. Refinancing activity dipped by 6.3 percent from the past week, even while the MBA indexed a 0.2-percent upshot in purchases. On an unadjusted basis, the Purchase Index recorded a 2.1-percent decline ? a contrast with 13.5 percent registered over the same period last year.

Commenting on the figures, Mike Fratantoni, MBA?s VP of research and economics, said in a statement that rates for 30-year and 15-year fixed-rate mortgages each approached new lows in their survey before Labor Day weekend.

?Despite these rates,? he added, ?refinance application volume fell for the third straight week, and is more than 35 percent below levels at this time last year. Purchase application volume remains relatively flat at extremely low levels, close to lows last seen in 1996.?

Across the MBA?s other indices, the four-week moving average fell by a seasonally adjusted 3.2 percent and a seasonally unadjusted 3.7 percent. The Refinance Index also saw a 3.1-percent decline on average.

Total applications bore witness to less refinancing activity overall, as the numbers declined from 77.8 percent to 77.1 percent. Rates for adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) meanwhile lingered at 7.1 percent from last week.

For 30-year and 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, contract interest rates on average fell from 4.32 percent to 4.23 percent and from 3.49 percent to 3.41 percent, respectively. According to the MBA, these numbers reflect the second lowest rate for the 30-year and the absolute lowest for the 15-year since the launch of the survey in 1990.

The MBA?s latest figures fail to buck trends from August.

Writing in a widely distributed U.S. Housing Data Response that runs weekly, Paul Dales, a senior U.S. economist with Capital Economics, ascribed continuing lows for mortgage application volume over last month to a failure by ?ultra-loose monetary policy? to boost economic activity.

?Despite the fall in 30-year mortgage rates to within a whisker of a record low,? he wrote, ?mortgage applications for refinancing have risen only modestly and applications for home purchase have dropped to a 15-year low.?

According to Dales, historically low mortgage rates likewise do nothing to encourage homebuyers. A rush by investors to scoop up U.S. Treasury debt last week forced a decline in 10-year Treasury yields, alongside rates for the 30-year loan.

?All this confirms what we have been saying all along; that the price of credit is not the problem,? he added. Instead, the sharp fall in house prices and the still high unemployment rate have significantly reduced the ability and willingness of households to borrow.?

The future of drugs is all in the family

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

In a first-ever comprehensive study of the species origins of nature-derived drugs, it is shown that drug-producing species are concentrated and clustered in a limited number of families, refuting the conventional view that as every nature species produces biologically active molecules, one can find drugs from almost any major block of species groups if one looks for them hard enough.

Whether you have a mild headache or you are running a fever, there is a high chance that the drug that is used to treat you comes from nature. Today, about half of the drugs on the market were discovered by screening collections of small molecules made by bacteria, fungi, snails, leeches and other such species.

In Singapore, the top selling drugs for treating common ailments that are derived from nature include No. 12 Aspirin (for pain, fever and inflammation), No. 2 Amoxil (antibiotic), No. 7 Procodin (for cough), No. 8 Beserol (muscle relaxant) and No. 3 Ventolin (for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

Worldwide, eight of the top 20 selling drugs available today are derived from nature, some of which include No. 2 Lipitor and No. 9 Crestor (both for treating cholesterol), No. 4 Advair Diskus (for asthma), No. 15 Lantus (for diabetes), and No. 18 Diovan (for hypertension).

Another six of the top 20 selling drugs in the world are mimics of natural products. No. 6 Abilify (for psychosis and depression), No. 7 Singulair (for asthma), No. 10 Cymbalta (for depression and anxiety disorders) are some of the examples.

Although the pharmaceutical industry has made serious efforts to get away from relying on the natural world by attempting to create rationally designed drugs using synthetic compounds, nature-derived drugs still constitute a substantial percentage (26%) of recently approved drugs.

Nature-derived drugs not in every species

The conventional view about nature-derived drugs is that as every nature species produces biologically active molecules, one can find drugs from almost any major block of species groups if one looks and searches for them hard enough.

This view has been proven wrong in a first-ever comprehensive study of the species origins of nature-derive drugs conducted by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Tsinghua University. Published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America in July 2011, the research showed that drug producing species are concentrated and clustered in a limited number of families.

Data analysed by the research team showed that out of 886 nature-derived drugs discovered in the last 50 years (1961 to 2010), 88% or 783 were from previously known drug producing families. A further 41 were from near neighbours of known productive families. Only 62 came from 'dark horses' that were completely outside of the known clusters.

Lead researcher Professor Chen Yu Zong from the Department of Pharmacy at NUS, said, "In each kingdom of life, the drug-producing families are strongly clustered. Only a limited number of molecular scaffolds are privileged drug-like structure made by specific metabolic genes in certain species families. Some families with lots of bioactive compounds have never produced a drug because their metabolic genes are not capable of producing privileged drug-like structures, even though they can produce bioactive structures. "

Focus on family members

The findings from this research can now point us to the direction on where to concentrate on the search for new drugs, and that is from pre-existing drug-productive families.

In explaining this rationale, Prof Chen said, "We have identified and highlighted a number of families that have not produced an approved drug but are likely in the drug-producing clusters and potentially produce future approved drugs. Just like by knowing the clustered distribution patterns of oil fields, one knows where to place their bets on the next oil field based on existing findings. For instance, if one finds the first oil-producing well somewhere in the South China seas, by knowing that oil fields tend to be clustered, there is a higher chance in finding the next oil fields by a search of the surrounding areas."

By focusing on pre-existing drug-productive families, resources can be concentrated on manipulating and expanding the families for producing new, as well as existing drugs. In addition, these pre-existing drug-productive families can be studied on why they produce privileged drug-like structures, and the knowledge can be used for designing new and novel drugs.

The potential impact of the research, concludes Prof Chen, is "to promote bioprospecting efforts on those species and species families that are likely to produce new drugs, thus enabling the increase of new drug productivity."

Diamond, Streep among 5 honored by Kennedy Center (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The good times never seemed so good for Neil Diamond.

Known for his songs that have become anthems at ballparks and bars, Diamond was chosen Wednesday to receive the Kennedy Center Honors this year along with some of the biggest names from Broadway, jazz, classical music and Hollywood.

Diamond will be honored with Broadway singer Barbara Cook, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, saxophonist Sonny Rollins and actress Meryl Streep for their contributions to American culture through the arts. President Barack Obama will salute the artists and others will perform in their honor at a ceremony at the Kennedy Center. CBS will broadcast the show Dec. 27.

Diamond said he was "flying way above sea level" when heard about the honor.

"I've watched, and I've seen, and I've even dreamed that someday that would happen to me," he told The Associated Press. "But I never really believed that it would."

Diamond said he used to get distracted when people sang along with him to hits like "Sweet Caroline," which was written for presidential daughter Caroline Kennedy.

"But I realized pretty quickly that it was a compliment and I had no choice in the matter anyway, so I got with the program and just learned to love it," said Diamond, who earlier this year was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The 70-year-old Diamond also tweeted Wednesday that he was engaged to a woman named Katie ? but wouldn't tell AP who she was so that she wouldn't "change her mind."

Streep, 62, has made more than 45 movies and has won two Oscars in a career that spans from Shakespeare to ABBA with the movie "Mamma Mia!" Some of her biggest hits have come in recent years with "The Devil Wears Prada," "Julie & Julia" and "It's Complicated." In the upcoming biopic "The Iron Lady," Streep will play British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The actress said she is deeply honored by the Kennedy Center's nod and wishes her parents were alive to see it.

"All that education, allowance, tuition, voice lessons, summer jobs, scholarship application deadlines and loving care and discipline ? all that they gave me, bore fruit in a way they never dreamed," she said in a statement.

Ma is one of the best-known classical musicians. He played for President John F. Kennedy and President Dwight D. Eisenhower at age 7 at a fundraiser for a national cultural center that would later become the Kennedy Center. The 55-year-old said he feels too young to be receiving such an award for lifetime achievements.

The son of Chinese parents who lived in Paris and moved to New York said some of his musical heroes have won the Kennedy Center Honors, including Mstislav Rostropovich and Leon Fleisher, so he was stunned to be joining their ranks. He said the honors are an important moment to nurture the arts each year.

"The whole nation gets together to celebrate essentially the accomplishments of the human spirit," he told AP. "It really is to celebrate, in a sense, what people who are passionate are capable of doing."

Rollins, who turned 81 on Wednesday, has shared the stage with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, among others.

"I definitely feel that this award is not so much for me as it is for some of the great, great jazz artists that preceded me," he said. "I'm very happy that it's an honor for jazz because I think jazz is such an important spiritual force all over the world."

Cook made her Broadway debut in 1951 and later was cast in Voltaire's "Candide" and Meredith Wilson's 1957 hit musical "The Music Man." The Beatles later recorded the song she made popular, "Till There Was You." Cook said she cried when she received the letter informing her of the Kennedy Center Honors.

"It's a kind of validation for me, for my whole life," she said. "Because when I sing, I put my whole life, the good part, the bad part, I put that into my work."

The world still thinks Americans are "coolest": poll (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? They may be witnessing their global superpower influence decline in the face of challenges from other emerging players on the world stage, but Americans have been voted the world's "coolest nationality" in an international poll.

Social networking site Badoo.com (www.badoo.com) asked 30,000 people across 15 countries to name the coolest nationality and also found that the Spanish were considered the coolest Europeans, Brazilians the coolest Latin Americans and Belgians the globe's least cool nationality.

"We hear a lot in the media about anti-Americanism," says Lloyd Price, Badoo's Director of Marketing. "But we sometimes forget how many people across the world consider Americans seriously cool."

Of course, not all Americans are cool far from it. Some like Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, Samuel L. Jackson, Johnny Depp and Quentin Tarantino are way cooler than others.

Americans, however, are the dudes who invented cool and who still embody it in many fields from music to movies and TV to technology.

"America," says Price, "boasts the world's coolest leader, Obama; the coolest rappers, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg; and the coolest man in technology, Steve Jobs of Apple, the man who even made geeks cool."

Brazilians are ranked the second coolest nationality in the Badoo poll and the coolest Latin Americans, ahead of Mexicans and Argentinians. The Spanish, in third place, are the coolest Europeans.

The French are voted cooler than the British, and Canadians cooler than the Belgians. This may come as a relief for Canadians, who are sometimes viewed as chronically uncool.

Or, as Michael Ignatieff, the Canadian politician, once put it: "Paris, Texas stands as a metaphor for broken dreams; Paris, Saskatchewan just sounds ridiculous."

THE 10 COOLEST NATIONALITIES FIVE LEAST COOLEST

1. Americans 1. Belgians

2. Brazilians 2. Poles

3. Spanish 3. Turks

4. Italians 4. Canadians

5. French 5. Germans

6. British

7. Dutch

8. Mexicans
