Solemn gathering marks Flight 93 crash in Pennsylvania (Reuters)

SHANKSVILLE, Pa (Reuters) ? Thousands gathered Sunday at the site where hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed as the nation paused to mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people -- including 40 passengers and crew here.

By 10:03 a.m. -- the moment when the Boeing 757 passenger jet slammed into the field in southwestern Pennsylvania here back in 2001 -- the sun had burned through the fog that had covered the hills earlier in the morning, warming the faces of those who marked the anniversary.

President Barack Obama, who was in New York to remember the nearly 2,700 people killed at the World Trade Center in the coordinated attacks 10 years ago, arrived in Shanksville at midday Sunday to lay a wreath at the memorial.

The president and the first lady, Michelle Obama, walked to the boulder that marks the approximate site where the airplane crashed and then spent about 45 minutes talking with family members of the passengers and crew members who died.

Flight 93, bound for San Francisco from Newark, New Jersey, never hit its intended target -- investigators believe the hijackers were planning to crash into either the U.S. Capitol or the White House -- because some of the passengers stormed the cockpit and attempted, unsuccessfully, to regain control of the aircraft.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett said their actions, which caused the plane to crash, "set a new standard for American bravery."

Paul Greengrass, who directed a feature film about Flight 93, said the passengers' achievement seems even more extraordinary today than it was a decade ago.

"It's just unimaginable that 10 years ago today, just above your heads, in this peaceful scene was a struggle of that importance and magnitude," Greengrass said.

Ray VanSickle, 45, of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, said, "I wasn't connected with anybody on the flight but connected as an American, as someone who felt a lot of pain."

"As I see the family members and friends come in, I can't imagine what they went through," said VanSickle, a high school Spanish teacher. "I need to be here, I think."

A private ceremony will be held on Monday for relatives of the victims to bury three caskets containing unidentified human remains from the crash, said Patrick White, whose cousin "Joey" Louis Nacke died aboard Flight 93.

"It will be equally as solemn and more subdued certainly than today but probably far more emotional in its impact," he said. "For me it's the most appropriate reuniting of the passengers and crew in their final resting place."

Somerset County Coroner Wally Miller wiped away tears before speaking, repeating the refrain, "We remember them."

The memorial is about 40 percent complete. It includes a marble wall etched with the names of the 40 passengers and crew that follows the flight path and the boulder marker.

The memorial is scheduled to be finished in 2014, according to architect Paul Murdoch. Plans call for 40 groves of trees to be planted in a nearby field, with a walkway along the groves to pass between two large walls. An overlook to allow visitors to see the expanse of the field and the crash site also is planned.

Organizers say $10 million still needs to be raised to complete the Flight 93 National Memorial. About $52 million has already been raised in public and private funds.

At the ceremony on Saturday, former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, said he and House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican, had agreed to have a bipartisan event to raise money for the memorial.

Paltrow, Timberlake win creative arts Emmy Awards (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? "Boardwalk Empire" captured a leading seven trophies at the creative arts Emmy Awards, with Gwyneth Paltrow and Justin Timberlake earning TV comedy series guest-star honors.

Paltrow, recognized for "Glee," and Timberlake, a winner for hosting "Saturday Night Live," were no-shows at Saturday's ceremony for technical and other achievements. It preceded the main Sept. 18 Emmy show.

"She couldn't be here because it's happy hour at the Starlight Room," presenter and "Community" actress Alison Brie joked about Paltrow's absence.

Timberlake received his award for hosting a "Saturday Night Live" episode and shared in another Emmy for co-writing his opening monologue, in which he crooned about not wanting to sing.

"Justin Timberlake really wanted to be here but we said no, they want to see the writers," "SNL" head writer Seth Myers told the audience.

"Boardwalk Empire," which stars Steve Buscemi as a Prohibition-era politico in Atlantic City, N.J., earned trophies for categories including art direction, picture editing and makeup.

Loretta Devine was honored as best guest actress in a drama series for "Grey's Anatomy," with Paul McCrane earning the category's best actor award for "Harry's Law."

Fired "Two and a Half Men" star Charlie Sheen, the subject of a Comedy Central "roast" taping across town Saturday, was at the ceremony in spirit as his former co-star Jon Cryer and series creator Chuck Lorre presented awards in the casting category.

Lorre said he'd been urged to share funny stories about casting, asking Cryer: "What do you think? Got any amusing anecdotes?"

"Uh, none that amuses me," Cryer replied.

"Drawing a blank," Lorre concluded.

"America's Most Wanted" host John Walsh received the Governors Award, and said backstage that he had received offers from Fox, which dropped the show, and CNN to do news commentary. He turned them down.

"I said to Fox, all I really want to do is catch bad guys and find missing children," Walsh said. "This is the only thing I know how to do on television."

He'll be hosting a new version of the show on the Lifetime network and hopes to expand internationally.

Howie Mandel teased next week's Emmy Awards, saying: "This is great. These are the creative Emmys. Unlike the Emmys next week, where there's no creativity at all."

HBO earned a leading 15 awards Saturday, followed by PBS with 10, Fox with nine, CBS with seven and NBC with five. ABC won three awards, behind the four each for Discovery Channel and History.

The creative arts ceremony will air Sept. 17 on ReelzChannel, which earned three awards for the controversial miniseries "The Kennedys." The 63rd annual prime-time Emmy ceremony, with "Glee" star Jane Lynch as host, will air live the next night on Fox.

Sudanese forces pull out of Abyei (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Assistant U.N. peacekeeping chief Edmond Mulet says government troops from Sudan's Arab north and the south's Sudan People's Liberation Movement will soon pull out of the contested region of Abyei.

The pullout comes as Ethiopian peacekeepers begin moving in for a temporary assignment to demilitarize the region, with 1,700 of 4,200 peacekeepers now in place.

Mulet told reporters after a closed Security Council meeting about Sudan on Thursday that the two sides agreed in Addis Ababa earlier Thursday to pull out of the region between Sept. 11 and 30. The council has authorized the deployment of the Ethiopian force for six months.

Could George Carlin get his own street?

Could George Carlin get his own street?

AP/Pablo Kosmicki

George Carlin

Wouldn't it be cooler if they called it "Seven Dirty Words Boulevard" instead? George Carlin, the legendary comic whose biting satire influenced generations of comedians, may be getting his own street.

A Change.org petition started by comedian Kevin Bartini to christen Carlin's boyhood block on West 121st Street "George Carlin Way" has already amassed nearly 3,000 signatures -- and the support of Carlin's daughter Kelly. "I feel it's very important to protect his legacy and keep the torch lit and to keep the conversation going the next 40 years and I'm very proud and honored to do it," she told ABC News this week.

Though the famously acerbic wit, who died in 2008, might never have been the type one could imagine as a statue in Central Park, his uniquely urban perspective still feels deeply resonant today, as much a cherished part of the culture of the sidewalks and stoops of Gotham as thin crust pizza, open fire hydrants and crazy people muttering to themselves. And though the neighborhood's Community Board rep told the Village Voice Tuesday that "we just heard about it today, so we don't have any further details," the city certainly already has its share of thoroughfares named for distinguished New Yorkers. Most recently the Bronx has gained a Thurman Munson Way and downtown got a? Saul Bruckner Way. "

So why not give Morningside Heights a little bit of the Carlin magic? As Kelly Carlin says, " "I know my dad loved his neighborhood deeply and you know, I think it's important that New Yorkers know where he came from." And in a city that never sleeps, what better spot could there be to pay homage to a man who revolutionized the art of standing up?

Home Improvement Contractors vs Homeowner Claims Adjusters ...

You wouldn?t pick the low bidder to do plastic surgery on you, so why pick a fly-by-night operator to give your home a facelift?

Picking a home improvement contractor is a lot like picking a roommate, you?re going to have to live with them for a while, so you had better pick someone you can get along with and trust. Here?s a few pointers:

Know what you want going in: If you already know exactly what you want and can communicate that to a home improvement contractor, that allows the contractor to tell you how he or she will complete your project.

If the home improvement contractor sounds knowledgeable about your specific requirements ? knows how to install hardwood floors, is familiar with the type of window frames you want, etc. ? it?s a good bet that he or she is a reliable professional. Conversely, if a home improvement contractor gives you the deer in headlights look when you discuss the advantages of a floating floor, you might want consider going with someone else.

]]>

Do further research: The more you know about the project you want to undertake, the better you?ll be able to direct your home improvement contractor. Also, knowing what?s up will also make it harder for your home improvement contractor to pad the bill with unnecessary additions or outrageous labor costs. Not that any of them would do that, of course.

Don?t believe the advertising: Remember, contractors pay for all those flashy ads and television spots. If you want to find out a home improvement contractor?s real value, ask for references and a portfolio.

Papers please: Most states have laws requiring home improvement contractors to be licensed and bonded. Ask to see your home improvement contractor?s credentials and also check your contractor?s certificate of insurance. Contractors in most states are required by law to carry worker?s compensation, property damage and personal liability insurance.

Word of mouth is usually the best reference when it comes to contractors. Talk to friends who have recently had work done and also ask other professionals like your plumber or landscaper who they would recommend. Also check with local building inspectors and other public officials involved in construction.

Check with your local district attorney?s office, the Better Business Bureau, or small claims court to see if any your potential home improvement contractor is facing any pending litigation. In most jurisdictions, court records are available to the public, and you should be able to see if any judgments have been entered against the contractor for incomplete or shoddy workmanship or shady business practices.

Picking the right home improvement contractor is key to the success of your project. Be informed and be aware and you?ll ensure that you get a professional that?ll do your home right.

The Development of Strategic Human Resource Management

HTML Ready Article. Click on the "Copy" button to copy into your clipboard.

By: David Shoemaker

Historically, human resources was known in the past to serve as a personnel function. As some human resource training program courses may explain, human resources would collect documents, and also made sure companies didn't make legal errors while hiring, for example making decisions based on bias and discrimination.

It wasn't until the 1990s when human resources became more strategic. In a human resource training program you might learn for example that strategic human resource management began to really grow as HR professionals became experts in specific topic areas such as compensation, training, and selection. When HR professionals would try to prove their importance by using HR metrics, such as how long it took to hire or train an employee, business leaders in the company were unimpressed. The problem was that HR metrics did not communicate HR's hard work to the leaders in terms of business value.

This miscommunication forced HR to adopt an approach based off of the organization's business strategy and would have that business strategy as its foundation. Now, in strategic human resource management, HR looks at the business model for the organization first and then asks how it can create value based on that model.

HR Today serves many important functions. Some of these involve responsibilities for strategic human resource management such as supporting organizational strategy, creating the workforce needed to achieve goals, and using the same metrics used by CEOs and top executives. Many experts say that the goal of strategic human resource management is to form a workforce with the characteristics and qualities necessary to accomplish the desired goals.

A human resource training program will show you how to use the same metrics that CEOs and business leaders in the organization use to evaluate themselves. Managers look to see that it evaluates financial performance as well as customer satisfaction. A human resource training program can help prepare you to be successful in implementing the necessary steps to get the outcome the organization needs.

Strategic human resource management follows a model in order to see what the company needs to do to be successful. The model has three main steps. The first step is to identify the areas of the business model where you can drive value. The next step is to develop an HR strategy in order to carry out the business model with correct metrics. Lastly, you use the metrics to show leaders in the organization how HR is driving business performance. Experts say that it is important to understand value. You must create value for a company's customers if you want to help the company flourish.

Human resource training program courses explain how to best understand what value means. Experts explain value as any benefits a customer gains divided by the cost of that purchase, from any exchange or purchase with the organization. Experts agree, however, that there always needs to be enough benefits to overcome the costs of the purchase. Overall, it's important to remember that being successful in HR depends on communication skills and understanding strategy, organization, and value.
