1 dead in Turkey explosion in Mediterranean town (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? A bomb blast in a Mediterranean town in southern Turkey killed one person and wounded two others on Friday, officials said.

Dogan news agency said the bombing in the town of Kemer was carried out by a sucide bomber targeting a paramilitary police station. The suspected bomber detonated the explosives near a sentry box after failing to reach the station, the agency said.

The explosion damaged several cars and smashed windows of nearby buildings, it said.

The blast came 10 days after a car bombing near a school in the capital, Ankara, killed three people and wounded 34 others. A Kurdish militant group, the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons or TAK, claimed responsibility for the car bombing and threatened more attacks in retaliation to what it called the government's "war" against the rebels.

The same group had also claimed a small bombing in Kemer on Aug. 28 that wounded 10 people, including four Swedish nationals. A suicide bombing, also claimed by the Falcons, had left 32 people wounded in Istanbul in November 2010.

Kurdish rebels, who are fighting for autonomy in the Kurdish-dominated southeast, have dramatically stepped up attacks in Turkey, killing dozens of security force members and at least 14 civilians since July. They have also abducted state employees, including 12 teachers.

The rebels intensified their attacks after accusing the government of not responding to their demands, including autonomy and education in the Kurdish language ? which Turkey fears could divide the country along ethnic lines.

In a nationwide crackdown on alleged Kurdish rebel sympathizers, police have detained hundreds of supporters of a pro-Kurdish party as Turkish warplanes have bombed Kurdish rebel bases in neighboring northern Iraq.

In latest reported violence in the country's Kurdish-dominated southeast, the rebels killed two soldiers in an ambush in Sirnak province late Thursday, the Interior Ministry said Friday. Three rebels were killed in an ensuing clash, it said. After the attack, the military declared several hilly areas along the Iraqi border off limits to civilians.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people since 1984.

Documentary shows emotional ride for Pearl Jam (AP)

TORONTO ? At one point in the new Pearl Jam documentary, a young Eddie Vedder flails on stage with so much intensity, he seems possessed. Considering Vedder's been doing it now for 20 years, it begs the question: How does he come down when the house lights come up?

The question is off-putting to Vedder: He says the idea of thinking about his mindset during a performance makes him "uncomfortable." But the 46-year-old frontman explains: "It really is like riding a wave, you know. It's almost like ? it's like Mother Nature or something. You just kind of don't question it. It's like songwriting. Sometimes it's best not to dissect."

But Vedder and the rest of Pearl Jam were subject to much more introspection in the new film, "Pearl Jam Twenty," directed by their good friend, director Cameron Crowe. The film explores the emotional journey of the band, from the pre-Vedder Mother Love Bone to modern-day Pearl Jam.

Vedder and the rest of Pearl Jam talked about the film recently in Toronto, where the documentary made its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. The band, which got its start during the grunge movement in Seattle, likes to fly under the radar: They do few interviews, and when not playing music, they maintain a low profile.

So how did such a private band decide to let the Oscar-winning Crowe in?

"Kicking and screaming," says Vedder. "But if anyone was gonna do it, I guess we just put our trust in Cameron, and he in some ways was part of our group for formative stages."

Crowe has known the band for years. The film chronicles the formation of Pearl Jam and their ups and downs. Through home movies, old interviews and intimate sit-downs with the band, Crowe weaves a narrative thread that illustrates the passionate journey behind making the music and dealing with the world around them.

"We really started cooking it up about 10 years ago. We did a film called `Single Video Theory,' that was around the `Yield' album and Kelly, the band's manager and I started seeing all this footage that was not going to be usable in what we were doing. It made sense to kind of do a `Kids Are Alright,' which is one of our favorite rock movies, with Pearl Jam,'" Crowe said. "So that's where it started to come together. So over the years, it became more and more real. About three years ago, it was like `OK, we're doing it.' And then it was going through the footage, which was voluminous."

Reflecting on the music now, Vedder said he's struck how the lyrics written then _"When we were young and na?ve," he says ? have a different meaning when he performs them now.

"Songwriting is about kind of writing a message to yourself in a way," Vedder says. "It's a reminder of how pure of a spirit you were."

While Pearl Jam remains passionate when it comes to playing music, even more impressive is how long they've stayed together. With the exception of drummer Matt Cameron, who came to the band from Soundgarden in 1998, Vedder, bassist Jeff Ament, and guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready have been together for two decades. That's longer than most marriages, let alone bands.

Gossard attributes their stamina "to a lot of stubbornness."

"Every single person in this band has gone through different periods of being disenfranchised or feeling sort of not connected to it," Gossard says. "You have to fight it out and figure it out."

Sometimes when bands stay together for a long time, they slip into nostalgia, playing their same hits show after show. Conversely, Pearl Jam keeps their show fresh by not subscribing to a predetermined set list. There are songs like "Alive," and "Yellow Ledbetter" that they play more frequently, but you can equally hear something like "Given to Fly" or "Black." Some shows you may hear all four; other shows maybe none of them. That spontaneity seems to be a major ingredient in keeping the music fresh both for the band and their fans.

"That's why I love Pearl Jam. They are authentic emotional and they feel every song, every night in a fresh way. ... (It) is the very essence of why the band is so important to people, because every night is different," Crowe says. "Every journey is unique and they're listening to these meditations and messages sent back to themselves from years earlier, and you feel it on stage and on the records."

The film has played several one-night engagements around the country, and is available on DVD on Oct. 24. It coincides with a hardcover picture book and a soundtrack.

Now that "Pearl Jam Twenty" has been completed, and the audiences "let in," as Vedder describes it, the band can go back to concentrating on what's next instead of celebrating the past.

"Now we can go back into the trenches and keep working on our own, keep working on the future and our future music again in our shadowy caves," says Vedder.

(AP) ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has reaffirmed to supporters that he isn't running for president, even as a speech he delivered at the Ronald Regan Presidential Library was likely to stoke fresh speculation about his White House ambitions.

The Republican governor warned that the nation's credibility abroad was being damaged by troubles at home. He charged that an indecisive White House has deepened the nation's economic pain, and he accused President Barack Obama of preparing to divide the country to win re-election next year.

Christie later said in a question-and-answer session that he was flattered by suggestions he run in 2012, but he added, "that reason has to reside inside me."

He urged a capacity audience of about 900 that included former first lady Nancy Reagan to look at the website Politico, which had pieced together a long string of video clips of him saying he's not a candidate for the White House.

"Those are the answers," he told the crowd.

In his speech, Christie didn't spare Congress as he delivered a scathing indictment of Beltway politics. He said the failure to compromise, along with Obama's lack of leadership, had set the country dangerously off course.

In Washington "we drift from conflict to conflict, with little or no resolution. We watch a president who once talked about the courage of his convictions, but still has yet found the courage to lead," Christie said.

"We watch a Congress at war with itself because they are unwilling to leave campaign-style politics at the Capitol's door. The result is a debt-ceiling limitation debate that made our democracy appear as if we could no longer effectively govern ourselves," he said.

Christie's appearance came during a three-day national trip in which the governor is raising money for Republicans and networking with party rainmakers.

With a reputation as a blunt-talking budget-cutter, the Reagan stage gave Christie the opportunity to extend his influence in a party that views him as a rising star.

Christie, the first Republican elected New Jersey governor since 1997, repeatedly contrasted Reagan's leadership skills with the dysfunction in Washington. Obama has positioned himself as a compromiser and deal-maker, but Christie cited his work in Trenton as the successful model, saying "leadership and compromise is the only way you reform New Jersey's pension and health benefits system."

He mocked Obama as "a bystander in the Oval Office" who was preparing to divide the nation along economic lines to win another four years in Washington, apparently alluding to the president's jobs bill, which proposes that wealthy Americans and big corporations pay more in taxes.

Obama is "telling those who are scared and struggling that the only way their lives can get better is to diminish the success of others," Christie said. He's "insisting that we must tax and take and demonize those who have already achieved the American Dream."

After the speech, Christie was asked repeatedly during the question-and-answer session if he would reconsider a presidential run. He declined, as he has many times before.

Lantie Jorandby, a 38-year-old physician from Florida who watched the speech, said she was unhappy with the GOP field and was eager to see Christie in the race. The registered Republican lamented the GOP presidential debates, calling them "a playground."

Mitt "Romney seems like a used car salesman. (Rick) Perry is out of his depth," she said. Christie "kind of has that Reagan-esque vibe."

Also Tuesday, his brother became the latest confidante to tamp down talk of a presidential bid.

"I'm sure that he's not going to run," Todd Christie told The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J. The newspaper also reported that the governor told wealthy donors in Santa Ana that he was not entering the race, echoing his previous statements.

Simplify Affiliate Marketing Building Sites With WordPress | WEB ...

With the right site building strategies, niche affiliate websites can offer some of the most reliable income for internet marketers. However, many of the commonly used methods to create these sites can require a lot of technical knowledge and be incredibly time consuming, even before the first word is written.

WordPress Saves The Day

With a bit of patience and reading, anyone who can write can email can learn to build affiliate sites with WordPress, which is an open-source content management system. Open source means that it is free to use and modify. The basic principle behind a content management system is to allow someone without a lot of technical or programming knowledge to run or even completely build a website.

WordPress was actually designed and is still known as a content management system and website creation tool for bloggers, but many creative internet marketers actually use it to build sites that look nothing like a blog. Many bloggers run a site through WordPress itself, but the best way to use WordPress is as a self-hosted installation to take advantage of everything that WordPress has to offer.

How to Use Self-Hosted WordPress

Installing self-hosted WordPress is actually simple, but it requires having all the necessary components to make it all work. First, a domain name or possibly even a sub-domain is needed. Then, a website hosting account is connected with the domain.

With most web hosts, there will be a ?Quick Install? link within the administration area of the hosting account that is otherwise known as the cPanel. By following the provided instructions, WordPress is automatically installed and ready to run on the domain name.

WordPress Themes

The first thing to do on a new WordPress site is to install a theme by searching available themes in the WordPress directory. A theme controls the visual look, style, and layout of the entire website.

Many different themes are available to fit a wide variety of types of websites and can be used ?as is?, but there are also other themes that allow for easy design customization for marketers who want their site to have a unique look.

WordPress Plugins

To add extra capabilities to WordPress, simply install plugins by searching for features that are desired. There are tens of thousands of plugins available that can do almost anything needed on most WordPress sites.

The extra features that plugins can add can really vary quite a bit. Some of them change the way the default WordPress programming works to use this system for different purposes. Other plugins allow for easy creation of advertising or even content. There are also plugins to help optimize pages on a WordPress site to improve search engine rankings.

The cost, if any, for these themes and plugins varies. Generally, they are free or very reasonably priced, although some of them can be expensive. However, it is possible to make a professional site with lots of good plugins and a nice theme for free.

Building a WordPress Site

Once this point is reached, the site is ready to be built. There are two main ways to add content to a WordPress site, by creating a ?post? or a ?page.?

A WordPress ?post? is typically used by bloggers to categorize content and also to have it indexed in a time-based archive. While this is a convenient system to use, most internet marketers do not like the way WordPress displays content created as posts.

A WordPress ?page? is typically one of the main, permanent pages on a WordPress blog. They do not show their creation date by default, and they can also not be grouped in categories. Internet marketers often find that blatantly old content can keep some visitors away from the site.

Using WordPress Pages Effectively

The most confusing thing to beginning WordPress users about creating a site that consists of nothing but WordPress ?pages? is how to actually show those pages on the site. By default, many WordPress themes may not actually show the created pages in a menu, or all of them may be crammed in a single menu that doesn?t look right.

By using the WordPress menu system, two different menus can be created for the site. The first menu is for the top of the site, which should link to the primary pages of the site. The second menu gets inserted as a custom menu widget, which goes in the sidebar of the site and generally links to secondary pages on the site.

Flights on United Airlines | Travel Vacation Destinations

United Airlines flies to more than one thousand destinations both worldwide and in the local market. It operates from Chicago, among other hubs within the United States. Most people can bear witness to the amazing flight services they get to enjoy while flying with this airline. It is numbered among the airlines that can be termed ?world class?.

Upon booking your flight, you will be given up to ninety minutes to check in before the departure time. This is mostly for domestic flights, with two hours given to passengers before departure on international flights. Although most people find the time restrictive, it is a great way of ensuring that everything is in order before departure and that nothing is done in a hurry, which usually leads to unfortunate situations such as forgetting certain things.

The airline offers different ways of checking in, among them self-check-in kiosks which have saved many people from the long lines of passengers checking in at the airline?s check-in desk, which can be irritating and time consuming besides being tiring. The kiosks have also made work a little easier for the staff as most people choose to use the kiosks compared to going to the check-in desks.

There are several in-flight services besides beverages and meals that passengers get to enjoy when flying on this airline. While soft drinks are free, you will be required to purchase any alcoholic drink you want during your flight. Other forms of snacks are also available but must be purchased, depending on the duration of the flight.

When you have booked your flight with United Airlines, always make a point of knowing the baggage requirements. This is because, just as with most airlines, there are maximum luggage weights and sizes allowed on board and carrying excess baggage will cost you more money. It is also important to ask what you can and cannot bring with you on the plane during your flight because, although some airlines will allow things such as pets and musical instruments on board, there are those who specifically disallow such items.

United Airlines also offers entertainment during its flights, depending on the duration of the flight. The in-flight magazines are perhaps the most interesting item as well as the different radio and TV channels from which you can choose during the flights to various destinations. It is true to say that this is one of the best airlines you can use.

Welcome to flylink website, committed to offering you the cheap flights to kiev to your top destinations and discount vacations at time of booking. Lawyer up: Mojang, Bethesda heading to court over Scrolls trademark

The creators of The Elder Scrolls and Minecraft are set to duke it out before a Judge. A trademark infringement suit threatened last month by Bethesda parent company ZeniMax alleged that Mojang, the Minecraft folks, were stepping on toes with their next title Scrolls, as it apparently infringed on the Elder Scrolls name, and had the potential to cause consumer confusion.

Despite attempts to settle the dispute amicably and without legal action, it?s been decided that the case will head to court. Mojang?s Markus Persson confirmed the news this week with a brief tweet: ?The Scrolls case is going to court! Weee! :D ?

?If we?re going to court, I will fight this for as long as it takes,? Persson said when the initial threat came in from ZeniMax?s Swedish legal team.

Seems like he?s not too worried at this point. Or he realizes, like everyone else, how patently ridiculous the idea of this suit is. Maybe the court will, too.

So far no comment from Bethesda or ZeniMax.

Loss of 'lake lawnmowers' leads to algae blooms

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Unprecedented algae growth in some lakes could be linked to the decline of water calcium levels and the subsequent loss of an important algae-grazing organism that helps keep blooms at bay.

Daphnia?also known as water fleas?act like microscopic lawnmowers in lakes, feeding on algae and keeping it in check. However, without sufficient calcium, these water fleas cannot reproduce.

"When water calcium levels get low and Daphnia populations decrease in any lake, algal growth goes unchecked and blooms can occur," says lead author and biology doctoral student Jennifer Korosi. "Losing an important grazer like these water fleas has a domino effect that leads to other water quality problems."

Declining calcium concentrations in some lakes, which is linked to acid deposition and logging, has only recently been identified as a serious environmental problem in North America and Europe.

By studying microscopic fossils and other indicators preserved in a lake sediment core from Lake George (Nova Scotia), the Queen's research team found that algal production remained relatively constant throughout the last century until around1990 when the levels tripled. The increase in algae directly coincided with the decrease of Daphnia in the lake.

"Algal blooms appear to be increasing in many lake regions," says biology professor John Smol, Canada Research Chair in Environmental Change, and previous winner of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Herzberg Gold Medal as Canada's top scientist. "Decreasing calcium levels appear to be one more factor that can exacerbate this problem. This is particularly worrisome given that many other stressors, such as climate warming and fertilizer runoff, are already contributing to the production of nuisance algal blooms. This is one more nail in the coffin."

Other members of the research team include PhD candidate Joshua Thienpont and undergraduate student Samantha Burke. Funding for the research comes from NSERC.

These findings will be published in the next issue of the prestigious international journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
