Rapper Heavy D is dead at 44 (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Rapper Heavy D, who rose to fame during the 1990s and scored hit singles such as "Now That We Found Love", died on Tuesday after collapsing outside his Beverly Hills home. He was 44.

Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mark Rosen said in a statement that the rapper, whose real name is Dwight Arrington Meyers, was found on a walkway at 11:25 a.m. PST outside his condominium. He conscious and talking, but having difficulty breathing. Paramedics were called and the singer was rushed to a nearby hospital.

"The individual ultimately died at the hospital," Rosen said. He added that there were no signs of foul play, and the death is believed to be medically related. An official cause is pending an autopsy by Los Angeles County coroners.

The singer's New York-based agent was not immediately available for comment.

Rotund rapper Heavy D was born in Jamaica and moved to Mt. Vernon, New York as a child. He enjoyed hip hop music as a kid and formed his first group, the Boyz, with high school friends who took the stage names DJ Eddie F, Trouble T-Roy and G-Wiz.

The group became Heavy D & The Boyz and released their first album in 1987, which included singles "Mr. Big Stuff" and "The Overweight Lover's in the House." Their breakout album came with 1989's "Big Tyme," which included the hits "Somebody for Me" and "We Got Our Own Thang."

The band met with tragedy in 1990 when Trouble T-Roy died in an accident. One year later, they scored their biggest hit with the album "Peaceful Journey" and single "Now That We Found Love," which reached the top five on R&B charts and crossed over to mainstream pop audiences.

A string of hits followed in the 1990s. The band sang the theme song for popular TV show "In Living Color," and Heavy D's 1999 CD "Heavy" became his seventh album to chart among the R&B top 10.

During those years, the rapper also began acting, working in small roles on film and TV before landing a role in high-school TV drama "Boston Public". His film work included parts in "The Cider House Rules," "Step Up" and "Big Trouble."

Musicians and fans mourned the rapper's death on Twitter.

"U will be missed Heavy D so many laughs we've shared but your Music is Timeless and will Always be Around 4ever Love u Heav...," posted rapper Missy Elliot.

"NCIS: Los Angeles" star LL Cool J also tweeted, "May GOD embrace the soul of Heavy D and Bless his family. I respected you Heavy and I always will."

R&B artist Ne-Yo, who was with Heavy D in London recently, said "Had I known it'd be the last time I'd see him, I woulda told him he was truly great. RIP..."

Heavy D performed at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards and at the Michael Jackson tribute show in Cardiff, Wales, both in October.

'Modern Warfare' launch brings out criminals, crazies

Activision

From Kansas City to Paris, the "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" launch has inspired some people to play mean.

By Winda Benedetti

How badly do people want to get their hands on the new ?Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3? game? Bad enough to do some really, really stupid things.

"Modern Warfare 3" launched Tuesday and appears to be on pace to become the best-selling video game of the year ... if not of all time. Of course, when something that big hits the street, that means a few nasties and nut jobs are bound to try and ruin the fun for everyone else.

One such alleged nut job (my professional assessment) is the man who, according to police in Aurora, Colo., threatened to blow up the local Best Buy after he arrived at the store to find out "Modern Warfare 3" was sold out.

According to NBC affiliate 9News, Aurora Police Det. Bob Friel said that 31-year-old Lomorin Sar was arrested early Tuesday. Witnesses told police that Sar became real, real angry with the customer service desk after they told him the video game he allegedly pre-ordered earlier in the day was no longer in stock.

If Sar really had pre-ordered the game and didn't get it when promised, it's easy to understand how he might have been pretty dang peeved. But Sar was reportedly so angry he vowed to not only blow up the store, but to shoot employees in the parking lot. He has since been charged with disorderly conduct.

But the madness doesn?t end there.

According to a Kansas City police report, a 27-year-old man reported that, after driving to a local Game Stop to pick up his pre-ordered copy of "Modern Warfare 3," he was followed home by a man in an SUV. The man in the SUV got out, pulled a gun, and demanded that the victim give him the game.

The guy with the game apparently had no intention of giving up his precious copy of "Modern Warfare 3" and refused to hand it over. Brave? Stupid??Either way, there was a struggle for the gun and one shot was fired, though no one was hurt.

Police later found the would-be robber back at the Game Stop store doing what he should have done in the first place: waiting in line to buy the game. They identified him as David E. Morales, 18, and prosecutors charged him with attempted robbery and armed criminal action.

But it's not just your gun-wielding Americans who have gone gonzo about getting their copy of "Modern Warfare 3." In Paris, France, armed, mask-wearing thugs robbed two trucks that were delivering the "Call of Duty" game to stores over the weekend.

In at least one case, the thieves reportedly rammed a car into the delivery truck and used tear gas to take out the drivers before they made off with 6,000 copies of the game.

Meanwhile, in other news, millions of perfectly reasonable gamers around the world waited patiently for their turn to buy and play "Modern Warfare 3."

Introducing G Business Pages | SEO.com

Breeanne Martin

Up until this point, Google+ users have had only the ability to connect with other people. This Monday, however, Google announced the introduction of Google+ Pages, a service that allows you to connect with organizations and brands you care about.?

As Google describes it, ?Google+ has always been a place for real-life sharing, and Google+ Pages is no exception. After all: behind every page (or storefront, or four-door sedan) is a passionate group of individuals, and we think you should able to connect with them too. For you and me, this means we can now hang out live with the local bike shop, or discuss our wardrobe with a favorite clothing line, or follow a band on tour. Google+ pages give life to everything we find in the real world.?

It?s likely that Google+ Pages will have a high level of visibility thanks to their integration with basic Google search.? Pages places will generally turn up in the regular search results below an organization?s own website.? Google also plans to enable a feature they call Direct Connect. Limited pages have this feature at the moment, but Google states many more are coming in the future. You will be able to go direct to pages that have Direct Connect enabled simply by adding the '+' in a search query followed by the name of a page.

Although the service is promising, a few hangups still exist.? Currently, only one user can be registered to any given page, making management of a page difficult for a larger organization or department.? Some early users have also noticed that it is far too easy to accidentally publish information to an account? unintentionally.? Finally, a Google+ pages steer users away from companies? actual websites in favor of their G+ Page.? This may be a drawback to some users, however, owning a space on Google+ is yet another web presence that no business will want to miss out on.

Ready to get your business set up on Google+ Pages?? Head to the Google+ registration page to get started. Businesses are asked to classify under one of the following categories:

  • Local Business or Place
  • Product or Brand
  • Company, Institution or Organization
  • Arts, Entertainment or Sports
  • Other

Businesses are allowed to create as many pages as they like, providing you the ability to have a separate page for a particular product, product line, or event.? Your Google+ page will have a +1 button, similar to those now found around the web.? As a page however, you won?t have the ability to +1 other pages.?

Local business pages have additional functionality which allows you to provide a phone number and address that will add a map and local contact information to your page.? Although similar to the already existing Google Places service, they presently remain two separate services that must be managed individually.?

We?re excited about the new ability to connect with our audience on G+.? Check out the SEO.com G+ page and let us know what you think.

Defiant Cain says he won't drop out of GOP race (AP)

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ? Under rising pressure from fellow Republicans, presidential hopeful Herman Cain sought to muddy the reputation of one accuser, forcefully denied any and all allegations of sexual impropriety and vowed Tuesday the growing controversy would not drive him from the race for the White House.

"Ain't gonna happen," he declared.

Cain flashed defiance one day after a woman publicly accused the candidate of groping her more than a decade ago, adding her voice to three other accusers with allegations that presidential rival Mitt Romney called "particularly disturbing."

Speaking at a news conference, Cain vowed, "we'll get through this," as he sought to steady a campaign that has made him the leader in an unofficial race to emerge as Romney's principal conservative rival.

At one point he said he would be willing to take a lie detector test, but then appeared to hedge his answer seconds later.

The Georgia businessman was in the midst of his second week trying to curtail the furor surrounding his unorthodox campaign. There were signs his political trouble was far from over less than two months before the leadoff contests of the GOP nomination fight.

Romney joined other GOP opponents in urging Cain to answer the allegations. Prominent Republicans pressed for a full accounting. And there were growing indications of unease in conservative circles.

"If there is a pattern then it's a part of his character and then, yes, it is going to matter," Tony Perkins, head of the conservative Family Research Center, said in an interview.

Another name confronted Cain, as well, when one of his two original accusers gave an interview to The New York Times and was identified publicly by news organizations including The Associated Press as Karen Kraushaar, now a spokeswoman in the Treasury Department's office of inspector general for tax administration.

When asked about Kraushaar, Cain said he recalled her accusation of sexual harassment but insisted "it was found to be baseless."

Kraushaar did not respond to questions from The Associated Press. But her lawyer, Joel Bennett, said she has agreed to hold a joint news conference with as many of Cain's accusers as will appear.

An upstart in the presidential race, Cain shot to the top of opinion polls and emerged in recent weeks as Romney's main opponent, with tea party activists and other conservatives flocking to the former pizza company executive's tell-it-like-it-is style and outsider image.

But, since Oct. 30, he's been dogged by accusations from women that he acted inappropriately toward them while he headed the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s. And in recent days, the women have started to step forward publicly.

At least two women who worked at the restaurant association the same time as Cain filed sexual harassment complaints with the trade group and received financial settlements.

One of them was Kraushaar.

After her name was revealed by several news sites on Tuesday, the AP chose to publish it after independently confirming she was one of his accusers.

Kraushaar and her attorney previously had attempted to keep her name out of the public discussion, but they issued an anonymous statement last week that confirmed she had complained of sexual harassment and received a financial payout from the trade group. Kraushaar later confirmed to news organizations that she had filed the complaint. And she spoke publicly on Tuesday to the Times, saying she had decided to speak out since her name was public.

"When you are being sexually harassed in the workplace, you are extremely vulnerable," she said. "You do whatever you can to quickly get yourself into a job some place safe, and that is what I thought I had achieved when I left."

Kraushaar, 55, previously worked as a news reporter, and she has held other U.S. government jobs since she left the restaurant association after she settled her complaint against Cain. She also has written a children's book with her mother-in-law, "Gas Station Charley," about a dog. Her husband, Kevin, has worked as a lobbyist on environmental, municipal and health issues. He has donated money to both Democrats and Republicans. They live in suburban Maryland.

A third woman told The AP last week that she considered filing a workplace complaint against Cain over what she deemed sexually suggestive remarks and gestures that included an invitation to his corporate apartment. And a former pollster for the restaurant association has said he witnessed yet another episode involving a different woman.

The AP has not identified the other woman who filed a claim against Cain while working at the restaurant association. It also has not identified the third woman, who did not file a claim, because it promised confidentiality to her because she said she feared retaliation if her name became public.

Sharon Bialek came forward Monday to say that Cain, an acquaintance, groped her in car in July 1997 after they'd had dinner in Washington. Cain led the association at the time, and the unemployed Bialek was seeking job advice. She said she had been fired from her job raising money for the trade group's education arm ? told, she said, that she had not raised enough money.

Early Tuesday, Cain's campaign sought to undercut her credibility.

It issued a tough statement about Bialek including references to civil lawsuits in the Cook County Court system in Illinois allegedly relating to her and cited news reports of her involvement in a paternity case and a bankruptcy filing.

"In stark contrast to Mr. Cain's four decades spent climbing the corporate ladder rising to the level of CEO at multiple successful business enterprises, Ms. Bialek has taken a far different path," the campaign said.

It also questioned whether Bialek had a financial interest in stepping forward.

"Who is financing her legal team, have any media agreed to pay for her story, and has she been offered employment for taking these actions?"

In a round of media interviews, Bialek was asked repeatedly about her motives in speaking out after staying quiet for 14 years.

"I'm just doing this because it's the right thing to do," she said. She said she was neither paid nor offered a job to go public with her allegations. She said she waited so long to come forward because "I was embarrassed ... and I just kind of wanted it to go away."

She said she wasn't paying a fee to Gloria Allred, the attorney whose name has become synonymous with women's rights issues.

Late in the day, Cain fought back, standing before a crush of reporters at a hotel on the outskirts of Phoenix. Outside, protesters waved signs that read: "Hey Herman. How many more women will you be calling liars?"

Cain said he called the news conference because he wanted to speak directly to the public, accusing the media of distorting his response to the allegations. He said he had never seen Bialek until she called her news conference on Monday in New York, alongside attorney Allred.

"I don't even know who this woman is," he said of Bialek. "I tried to remember if I recognized her and I didn't."

Cain said it was "a remote possibility" when asked if it were possible he would recall Bialek's alleged incident in the future.

"I seriously doubt I'm going to have an `a-ha' moment later," he said.

Cain contended that "the Democratic machine" was pushing the allegations but said he could not point to anyone in particular. He also suggested his accusers were lying.

Earlier, Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who has been a GOP front-runner for months, told ABC News/Yahoo! the allegations were serious "and they're going to have to be addressed seriously." He called the latest accusations disturbing, and Cain didn't disagree.

"He's right. They are disturbing to me," Cain responded. "They are serious. And I have taken them seriously."

But they're untrue, he declared.

Other Republicans sounded alarms about Cain's troubles and the impact on the GOP race as the party gears up to try to defeat President Barack Obama next fall.

"Get all the facts in front of people, otherwise he's going to have this continuing distraction," Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a former Republican National Committee chairman with deep ties to the GOP establishment, told MSNBC.

Though recent polling shows Cain still doing well, party operatives suggested it was only a matter of time before his political standing could suffer.

"Herman's base is going to stick with him," said Republican strategist Rick Tyler, Newt Gingrich's former spokesman. "But the average Republican voter who is not as engaged as intensely in the race, is sick of this and, for Cain, the concern is they will pass on it and pass on him."

Cain looked to keep those supporters in his corner.

"We are not going to allow Washington or politics to deny me the opportunity to represent this great nation," he said.

"As far as these accusations causing me to back off and maybe withdraw from this presidential primary race? Ain't gonna happen. Because I'm doing this for the American people, and the children and the grandchildren."

Euro exit-ology | Global Investing

Whether or not it?s likely or even a good idea, talk of Greece leaving the euro is no longer taboo in either financial or political circles.? What is more, anxiety over the future of the? single currency has reached such a pitch since the infection of the giant Italian bond market that there are many investors talking openly of an unraveling of the entire bloc. But against such an amplified ?tail risk?,? it?s remarkable how stable world financial markets have been over the past few turbulent weeks ? at least outside the ailing sovereign debt markets in question.

Yet, focussing on the possible consequences for Greece of bankruptcy and euro exit has now become an inevitable part of investment reseach and analysis. In a note to clients on Tuesday entitled ?Breaking Up is Hard to Do?, Bank of New York Mellon strategist Simon Derrick sketched some of the issues.

One issue he pointed out,? and one raised in the September Spiegel online report, was the chance of invoking Article 143 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which permits certain countries to ?take protective measures? and which could be used to allow restrictions on the movement of capital in order to prevent a flight of capital abroad.

Derrick then went through six potentially dramatic features surrounding a sudden euro exit by Greece and likely collapse ? temporary or otherwise ? of any new ?drachma?. 1) Extended market closure surrounding the announcement 2) Capital controls and possible travel bans to prevent a run on banks 3) Instant bankruptcy and default for many Greek companies and households with euro-denominated debts and need for a massive support operation for the private sector? 4) a need for temporary banknotes and possible ?overstamping? of existing notes 5) need for a balanced budget in the absence of EU support or capital market borrowing 6) reintroduction of price controls to cap soaring inflation.

And it?s perhaps because this relatively conservative list of consequences is so scary that the wider financial world remains so relatively calm. Despite the elevated risks of euro breakup, very few people really think it will happen as long as it remains a ?choice? for the governments in question.

Derrick himself reckons you can?t ignore the tail risk, but neither can this be a central scenario.

Is any of this likely to happen? No. As we have noted before, although it is a possibility that Greece could leave the Eurozone, it most certainly isn?t a probability. Indeed, our own guess is that the current crisis will limp to a resolution over the next month with Greece doing just enough to ensure that it gets the next tranche of aid. Next year will then see a move by the northern states to start talking about treaty change (as we have highlighted before). However, as we have learnt all too well over the past four years, considering seemingly remote possibilities is always wise.

50-legged creature was top seafloor predator

An ancient cockroach-like creature nearly a foot long once skittered along the seafloor in what is now Canada, a new fossil find reveals.

The fossil, a series of 500-million-year-old tracks, captured the movement of a large seafloor-dwelling creature with at least 25 pairs of legs. The animal was likely an arthropod called Tegopelte, a rare giant very rarely found fossilized. Arthropods are invertebrates with exoskeletons, a group that includes today's crustaceans and insects.

Reporting the discovery Tuesday in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, researchers led by Nicholas Minter of the University of Saskatchewan in Canada suggest that Tegopelte was a fearsome predator or perhaps a quick-moving scavenger, capable of "rapidly skimming across the seafloor" with only a few of its many legs touching the ground at a time.

The new fossils, five trackways made by the ancient arthropod, were uncovered in two locations in Yoho National Park in British Columbia in a geologic formation called the Burgess Shale. The longest track extended more than 9 feet, and the footprints were set more than 4 inches apart, suggesting a good-sized critter with a wide stance.

The researchers compared the tracks with the anatomy of known arthropods from the time period and concluded that the most likely footprint-maker was Tegopelte. This creature, which looked a bit like an enormous beetle and which was possibly related to trilobites, could grow to at least 11 inches long and 5.5 inches wide, with 33 sets of legs. That made it the best fit for the tracks, which represented at least 25 pairs of pattering feet.?

Tegopelte's flexible, bug-like exoskeleton likely allowed it to make the sharp turns evidenced in some of the tracks, the researchers wrote. The tracks also reveal sections where the animal "skimmed" along the seafloor with only a few legs bearing weight. The tracks suggest a fast-moving creature, the researchers wrote. It could have skittered to avoid predators, but the animal was twice the size of any other Burgess Shale arthropod, the researchers wrote. That size advantage suggests that the animal could have been a top predator itself.
