93% Amour

All Critics (94) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (87) | Rotten (7)

Haneke ("Funny Games," "Cache," "The Piano Teacher," "White Ribbon") has tackled a difficult subject that is unpleasant to watch, more unpleasant to think about. But the 70 year-old filmmaker has done it with taste, discretion and sympathy.

Amour might seem hardly the stuff of entertainment, yet the reason it has been acclaimed isn't mysterious. Confronting death, it studies life, closely and lovingly.

Because of its subject matter, and because of the actors, it's impossible to watch this film without being moved. But a martinet is running the show.

A compassionate, rigorously unsentimental masterwork from a director who doesn't normally truck in emotions like the one named in the title.

This is an unforgettable love story set at the close of day, as tragic and beautiful in its way as "Tristan und Isolde," and a portrait of the impossible beauty and fragility of life that will yield new experiences to every viewer and every viewing.

The film's power stems from the way Haneke avoids milking the viewer's sympathy.

Amour is just as likely to put someone to sleep as it is to win high-brow praise.

Intimate, admirable and elegant, it's, nevertheless, demanding, deliberate and depressing - about facing our own mortality.

A film so honest in dealing with end-of-life issues that its purity is a positive rebuke to all the maudlin movies on the subject.

Gains its power from grounding its characters' pain in something humanistic.

Profoundly moving, unflinchingly honest and tender with brave, emotionally raw performances by Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva.

Mundanely horrifying and extremely powerful.

The story behind the central tableau ... starts off completely mundane, shifts into a tale of pain and sadness, and ends on a note of horror mixed with tortured understanding.

If Haneke has any real interest in keeping art cinema alive, he should take some notes from the Queensbridge rapper Nas.

(AP) ? Investigators on Sunday examined flight recorders and other evidence to try to determine the cause of the airliner crash in Moscow that killed five people, an official said.

The Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings was carrying eight people, all of them crew members, when it careered off the runway Saturday while landing at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport. It went partly into an adjacent highway, broke into pieces and caught fire.

Four people were pronounced dead soon after the crash and the airline said on its Twitter account that a fifth, a flight attendant, died Sunday. Those who died Saturday were the pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer and another attendant, Red Wings said.

The survivors were reported in critical or serious condition in Moscow hospitals.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia's main investigative agency, was quoted by Russian news agencies saying the data recorders were being examined, along with fuel samples. In addition, he said flight documents for the plane have been taken from the airline for examination.

Lindsey Graham on fiscal cliff: ?Hats off to the president, he won? [VIDEO]

On this weekend?s broadcast of ?Fox News Sunday,? South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham conceded a political victory to President Barack Obama on the pending fiscal cliff negotiations.

?What have we accomplished? Political victory for the president,? Graham said. ?Hats off to the president ? he stood his ground. He?s going to get tax rate increases, maybe not at [$250,000], but on upper-income Americans. And the sad news for the country is we?ve accomplished very little in not becoming Greece or getting out of debt. This deal won?t affect the debt situation. And it will be a political victory for the president, and I hope we have courage of our convictions, when it comes to raise the debt ceiling to fight what we believe as Republicans. Hats off to the president, he won. ?

Graham said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell would have to get more Republican senators to support the deal.

?If McConnell can?t get 60 percent of us to vote for the deal, it will be hard for Boehner to get through the House,? Graham added. ?And want to vote for it, though I don?t like it because the country has a lot to the stake here.?

Graham?s colleague, California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, also a guest on ?Fox News Sunday,? said Graham was right in that regard. But she added that she is concerned about the economic impacts of the possible agreement.

?I think he?s partially right,? Feinstein said. ?You know, yesterday, 2.1 million Americans lost extended unemployment insurance. And, from this point on, it is lose-lose. My big worry is a contraction of the economy ? the loss of jobs, which could be well over 2 million in addition to the people already on unemployment. I think contraction in the economy really would be just terrible for this nation. I think we need a deal. We should do a deal.?

?If Lindsey and I could sit down, I think we could put the deal together,? she continued. ?I think the leadership is now working. It will probably be an immediate deal. In other words, it is not going to solve all of the problems or ever. but, it will solve certain problems, in other words, not only the unemployment insurance, but doctors lose 30 percent on Medicare patients, if that isn?t remedied, called the doc fix, that will probably be done. The tax extenders will probably be done and a number of other things that are instant.?

Organizing Craft Supplies

Every year as soon as Christmas is over I get anxious to start simplifying our home. Organizing craft supplies in my craft hutch was at the top of my list. This month with gift wrapping, handmade gift making, and lack of time its become total chaos in my craft space. We dedicated a corner in our master bedroom for my craft supplies so that I didn?t have to use the kitchen counter anymore. I thought it would be easier to keep track of everything but that?s not always the case. I?d show you the entire craft space but I?m not done organizing and decorating it yet, so that will have to wait for another post. But I will show you my craft hutch beautifully organized just the way I imagined it would be when I bought it last summer.

Craft Room Organization Tips

Its simple with neutral colors, definitely my ideal craft space!

Here is the before?

Organizing craft supplies

As you can see nothing matched and it was so disorganized that I had a hard time keeping track of what supplies were in which bin. These are only my most used craft supplies, half of our master bedroom closet is used for craft supplies as well-yikes! That?s a whole new project to work on in 2013, but for now I needed something to help me organize my craft space. I found a 4 pack of baskets on clearance for $13 at Lowes this week and was thrilled that they were exactly what I?ve been looking for. Organizing Craft Supplies

The tags remind me of faux chalkboard tags. To make them I used my Brother P-touch labeler, die cutting machine, Core?dinations Black Magic cardstock and sand-it set. Once my labels were cut I used the paper sander to lightly sand the edges and front of the tags. The black magic cardstock has a color on the backside that appears when you sand or cut it (for these tags I used the black and white paper). Then I created labels for each basket. The deco modes on the P-Touch Labeler are SO cute and there are a large variety of icons for any theme you?re looking for.

DIY Chalkboard Labels

Brother P-Touch Labeler

I?ve been using my Brother P-Touch labeler to organize the baskets as well as various other projects around the house. This little tool is a lifesaver! I?m a visual person, I like to see where everything is neatly put away and have some sort of organization system going on with everything in the house. We are in the process of tackling the kids rooms this weekend. Target has some pretty cute plastic bins for kids. We bought heart patterned containers for my daughters toys and we started labeling them by toy group. Santa brought her toys with way too many small pieces this year, so we need to make sure we don?t lose them!

Bloomberg: Steve Jobs Behind NYC Crime Wave

Agreed.
Now that the major carriers have all agreed to kill phones that are reported stolen [pcmag.com] (like most European carriers) , the in-country black market value should drop to zero.
There is still the export option for stolen phones.

But to a certain extent the price of the phone sets the black market value as well. And that price is just too high.

And further, I have my doubts about the claim at the bottom of the summary:
? The U.S. phone subsidy model reportedly adds $400+ to the price of an iPhone.

According to Apple's own web page [apple.com] the cost of an unlocked an contract free iphone5 (cheapest model) is $649. ($849 for the one with the big GBs).

So how does the subsidy enter into that equation?

It shouldn't unless Apple is propping up the price to support Carrier subsidy plans.

But why would Apple do that? The carriers make every cent of that subsidy back and never reduce the price of your monthly bill. Apple could sell at 100% markup and still beat carrier pricing. Instead Apple sells at well over 200% markup even when you buy direct with cash up front. No other manufacturer rakes in that much cash.

T-Mobile is ending subsidization of phones. (You can still buy it on time, but its a separate contract that has an end date).

California Coast Wrestling Classic: Three Harbor wrestlers come away with medals

APTOS -- The California Coast Wrestling Classic in Aptos came to an end Friday evening and three of Harbor High's strongest grapplers came away with medals to hang on their bedroom wall.

Harbor's Dakotah Francis advanced to the finals but came up short in a 5-3 loss to No. 1 Gress Lawson of El Dorado in the 220-pound championship.

"We were both kind of equally matched," Francis said. "But the illegal point, I didn't think it would happen but it happened. That kind of screwed up me a little bit."

The illegal point came in the third period with less than a minute to go. Francis was penalized for taking down Lawson after the referee had blown the whistle. It gave Lawson the momentum and scored the match's winning two points on a near-fall with seconds left on the clock.

"He did all the things he needed to do and it just came down to the last takedown," Harbor coach Brendan Guinn said. "The guy scrambled out of it. It was kind of like a freak thing."

Still, it was a standout performance for the senior to get so far in a pool with other elite wrestlers -- even after he missed a week of practice with an injured shoulder. Guinn couldn't be any prouder for Francis.

"His first tournament coming out and taking second place, I'm stoked for him," Guinn said.

The other two members of the Pirates wrestling squad to win medals was junior Willy Lamacchia, who placed third in the 138-pound division, and junior Bryan Battisto,

who took seventh in the 160-pound division.

"I'm a little disappointed I wasn't able to be in the finals and win the tournament," Lamacchia said. "I felt like I wrestled average in the beginning of the day but I had a good third-place match and I got it done."

"I was missing a little bit of my upper and lower attack in my semifinal. I was just shooting and I didn't have any snaps or fake-shots, so he knew it was coming and he was able to stop it," Lamacchia added.

Other wrestlers from Santa Cruz County that received medals were Ramon Zacarias of Aptos (eighth at 120) and Michael Kraft of San Lorenzo Valley (8th at 145). Nico Guerrero, who lives in Santa Cruz but competes for Bellarmine Prep, finished in fifth place at 126 pounds.

Ponderosa was the top team by racking up 242 points, taking the tournament title from Elk Grove Senior by three points. Not far behind were Porterville (224), Madera (216.5), and Jesuit (140.5) to make up the rest of the top five. Harbor was the top finisher in the county with a 23rd-place finish and 66.5 points.

Despite the hectic holiday schedule, co-coordinator of the CCWC Ken Pollastrini was still pleased with the crowd and the amount of teams that showed up to the event.

"I think it was great, there was 65 schools that turned out," Pollastrini said. "So being two days after Christmas that's pretty good. The local schools did fairly well, it's a big tournament and we had several people place which was good. Some of these schools are top notch in California but overall they did fairly well being it's an early tournament in the season, we were all pretty happy with the way they did."
