Romney raps Obama in SC; GOP rivals pile on in NH (AP)

CONWAY, S.C. ? Looking beyond an expected win in New Hampshire, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney reached out to South Carolina voters Friday with a two-track argument that President Barack Obama has mishandled the economy and devised an "inexcusable, unthinkable" plan to shrink the U.S. military. His GOP rivals kept up an anti-Romney drumbeat in New Hampshire, hoping to chip away at his support and slow his momentum.

The Republicans' 2008 nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain, teamed up with Romney in South Carolina and invested huge importance in the state's verdict.

"If Mitt Romney wins here, he will be the next president of the United States," McCain told the crowd at a century-old peanut warehouse near Myrtle Beach, where the two campaigned with South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

A new poll showed Romney gaining significant ground in the state. The TIME/CNN/ORC poll had Romney leading with 37 percent support, a 17-point gain since early December. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum was at 19 percent, a 15-point surge, and was nearly tied with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who had plummeted from 43 percent support in early December

Romney kept up his criticism of Obama as a jobs killer but didn't get much message reinforcement from the government on Friday: The Labor Department reported that employers added a net 200,000 jobs last month and that the unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent, the fourth straight monthly drop.

Romney said the report contains some good news, but that America still "deserves better." "Thirty-five consecutive months of unemployment above 8 percent is no cause for celebration," he said in a written statement.

Santorum, campaigning in New Hampshire, said the uptick had come "despite the president's jobs policy," and he managed to claim credit for Republicans. Santorum suggested the boost was tied to voters' optimism that a Republican would win the White House.

Gingrich, for his part, dismissed the job gains as inadequate, saying there are still 1.7 million fewer Americans going to work than when Obama was

"I think the president's program is slowing down the recovery, rather than accelerating it," he said.

Obama savored the positive economic news, calling it "real progress." And he took care of some campaign business by going out to lunch with four Americans who won a contest that lets small-dollar donors nosh with the president.

Romney's GOP rivals are working overtime to cast him as too timid and too moderate: They're urging Republicans to do themselves a favor and nominate a more conservative standard-bearer offering a sharper contrast to Obama.

"The only way Republicans lose is if we screw this up and nominate another moderate who has taken multiple positions on every major issue of our time," Santorum told supporters in a fundraising appeal Friday.

Gingrich argued on morning TV news shows that Romney can't win the nomination and said that even if he did, his performance against Obama in the general election campaign debates would simply draw a laugh from the president.

The former House speaker, speaking on ABC's "Good Morning America," predicted that Romney would win New Hampshire but that one of the former Massachusetts governor's GOP rivals "will eventually emerge as the conservative alternative and will beat Romney."

Romney is heavily favored to win Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, so much so that he can afford to focus on South Carolina, where voters aren't due to cast primary ballots for another two weeks. While the new poll put Romney out front in South Carolina, 49 percent of respondents said they still might change their minds. The survey had a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points.

McCain told voters there that Romney could effectively clinch the GOP nomination with a South Carolina win on Jan. 21.

"It's going to come down, as it always does, to South Carolina," he said.

The Arizona senator hammered at Gingrich and Santorum for backing government spending on legislators' special projects, known as "earmarks," when they were in Congress, telling voters, "My friends, earmarks are the gateway to corruption."

Santorum, who faced tough questioning from voters throughout the day about his policies, countered that it "just absurd" to characterize him as an irresponsible spender just because he supported earmarks.

"This is John McCain trying to put his imprimatur on the Republican, conservative movement," Santorum said, adding that McCain had failed to lead on overhauling Social Security, Medicare and other government programs.

Romney kept his focus on Obama, telling his audience in Conway that the president's proposal to reduce the military and focus more on Asia was "inexcusable, unthinkable and it must be reversed."

His allies were fully engaged in the tussle over which GOP candidate is the true conservative. Romney showcased the endorsement of conservative leader Bay Buchanan, whose brother Pat won the New Hampshire primary in 1996. Bay Buchanan cast Romney as a "real conservative" who could get things done.

Restore Our Future, the pro-Romney super PAC that unloaded a barrage of negative TV ads on Gingrich in Iowa, planned to go after him again ? this time in print. The group announced it had purchased full-page newspaper ads in New Hampshire and South Carolina tying the former House speaker to Obama.

"On issue after issue, Newt Gingrich and Barack Obama have so much in common, the right choice is to choose neither," the ad said, ticking through issues including Gingrich's support for the federal bank bailout and favoring "amnesty" for illegal immigrants

Jon Huntsman, who bypassed Iowa to bet his campaign on a good finish in New Hampshire, was showing off an endorsement by The Boston Globe, Romney's hometown paper. It was the second time Massachusetts' largest newspaper had snubbed Romney ahead of the New Hampshire primary.

Campaigning in Concord, N.H, Huntsman was asked by an audience member whether the other candidates have "clawed their way to the right," leaving him as the centrist in the race. Huntsman didn't accept the label but called himself a realist instead.

"We have to draw from ideas that are doable and not so outlandishly stupid that they create a lot of political infighting and finger-pointing and never, ever in 1000 years are going to get done," he said.

Also vying to emerge as Romney's chief rival were Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Perry, who finished fifth in Iowa, released a biographical ad in South Carolina that spokesman Ray Sullivan said shows his "perfect-for-South-Carolina status" as a conservative man of faith and a veteran.

Paul, who placed third in Iowa, was arriving in New Hampshire on Friday, in time to participate in a pair of weekend debates.

What Makes a Good Community Page Good?

Being a consistent source of accurate information that has regular updates is the best way a community can keep their players coming back to check a social media page, such as Facebook.

Here are some things that the groups noted above have done to keep their local players engaged in World of Warcraft Trading Card Game events in their local area.

Highlight Local Players

Highlighting your local players by name and ?tagging? them in a post is one way to recognize them and their attendance at your events. With a tool like Facebook, tagging them in a post also ties their personal profile with that of your community page.

Tell Players When and Where They Can Play

Updates to a social media page should remind players when and where they can go play. The easier to make it for your local players to find out about upcoming events, the more likely they are to attend.

Update with Relevant News

Keeping your players updated with news that is important to them is another way to get conversations started on the topics that are important to players. Being good about replying to messages on your community page will remind players that they can always come there to get quick and correct answers to the questions or concerns they have in your local area.

Discuss Ways to Expand the Playgroup

One of the goals of the Champion program is to always be working to expand your playgroup, and support new venues where players like to play the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game. Creating flyers is great, but using a community page to distribute them to other players so they can post them in their local areas or colleges helps spread the word to players who may not already be on your Facebook page or know where to play.

What Did They Win?

In addition to being featured in this blog, the prize for this contest was being entered into a raffle to receive 2 of the following 10 cards:

Magni, the Mountain King (Japanese version)
Cairne, Earthmother's Chosen (Japanese version)
Ysera the Dreamer (Japanese version)
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder (Japanese version)
Mottled Drake (Japanese version)
Avatar of the Wild (Japanese version)
King Genn Greymane (Japanese version)
Trade Prince Gallywix (Japanese version)
Vigil of the Light (Japanese version)
Troggbane, Axe of the Frostborne King (Japanese version)

Be a Part of the Community

Each area is unique and special in its own way, and while different things work differently for players in each region we?re all part of the global World of Warcraft Trading Card Game community. Social media is just one way in which players communicate with each other, and it?s a great tool to use to share news about upcoming events, or to recognize your players individually and their local accomplishments. Countless Champions of the Black Flame have been great about getting information to their local players and collecting their feedback to share with the Cryptozoic Team so we can improve the quality of our products and the service that we provide to you. As a member of the community, I?m grateful for their support!

Marine biologist accused of feeding killer whales

A well-known marine biologist and whale-watching tour operator has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly feeding killer whales in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, in violation of federal wildlife provisions.

Nancy Black, owner and operator of Monterey Bay Whale Watch, was indicted in San Jose federal court Wednesday and charged with violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which bars harming, harassing, feeding and otherwise interfering with marine mammals, including dolphins, sea lions and whales.

The four-count indictment accuses Black of twice feeding killer whales in the marine sanctuary ? once in 2004 and again in 2005.

The indictment also alleges that she altered a video showing possible illegal contact with an endangered humpback whale during a whale-watching trip in October 2005, then lied to investigators about doing so.

Black's tours and research aboard her company's whale-watching vessels ? the 70-foot Sea Wolf II and the 55-foot Pt. Sur Clipper ? have been featured extensively in local media and have appeared on the "Today" show and the "CBS Evening News."

Black's attorney, Lawrence Biegel, said his client was gathering scientific data and broke no laws when she filmed the behavior of killer whales feeding off free-floating pieces of blubber from a gray whale calf.

He said Black and several assistants cut a hole in the blubber and used a rope to secure it close to her 22-foot inflatable research dinghy so she could film killer whales with an underwater camera as they approached to eat it.

Calling the indictment "wholly unjustified" and based on a misunderstanding of Black's techniques and methods, Biegel said she acted within the boundaries of a whale-research permit issued by the federal government and presented the footage to other researchers at a conference in Norway.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which oversees the sanctuary spanning 276 miles of California's Central Coast, first revealed the investigation in 2006 and has had ongoing negotiations with the marine biologist over the charges, Biegel said.

The Monterey Bay Whale Watch website calls Black an expert in the biology of killer whales off the California coast who has a master's degree in marine science and works to catalog, identify and document their behavior in Monterey Bay.

The website boasts of trips led by experienced marine biologists who "collect valuable data on the marine mammals sighted" and "the most skilled captains who know where to find whales and how to approach them."

Obama to ask firms to keep jobs at home (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama will press business leaders next week to expand their industries at home rather than outsourcing jobs abroad, extending an election-year push to fight high unemployment.

The White House sees an increasing trend of companies deciding to "insource" jobs and invest in U.S.-based plants and factories, according to a White House official. It wants to encourage more businesses to follow that trend, the official said.

The emphasis on keeping U.S. jobs at home is in line with a populist economic message that Obama has championed that could play well with union workers, whose support the Democratic president will need to win re-election in November.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will host an event at the White House on Wednesday with business executives to highlight the advantages of investing in the United States, the official said.

"The president will meet with business leaders, as well as experts on the topic, to discuss why it's competitive to locate in the United States and what more can be done to work with companies to take similar steps to insource American jobs," the official said.

More than a dozen large and small businesses will attend the event, including padlock maker Master Lock, furniture company Lincolnton Furniture, software application developer GalaxE Solutions, and chemicals company DuPont.

The practice of U.S. firms moving jobs to foreign countries such as India and China, where labor is cheaper, is a source of concern to many U.S. workers, especially in the manufacturing sector, which was hit hard by the economic downturn.

Persistently high U.S. unemployment is the top concern of voters in the 2012 election. The White House was encouraged by the December jobs report, released on Friday, which showed a drop in the jobless rate to 8.5 percent, its lowest level in nearly three years.

Lily Collins Rumored for the Evil Dead Remake

Snow White, this is not. According to Bloody Disgusting, Lily Collins has just been cast in the remake of the 1981 horror classic, 'The Evil Dead.' She will play Mia, a recovering drug addict who heads to a cabin in the woods with four of her friends. For those unfamiliar with the original film, the group ends up stumbling upon the Book of the Dead, and soon become possessed by a group of demons.

Collins, who starred in 2009's 'The Blind Side,' is set to appear in the upcoming Snow White film 'Mirror Mirror' (a.k.a. the one with Julia Roberts, not Kristen Stewart). Needless to say, 'Evil Dead' is pretty much the exact opposite. Look at Lily showing off her range.

Less budget rancor seen for California legislature (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? California lawmakers return to work on Wednesday facing a series of critical financial decisions - including how to close a $13 billion budget gap for the state's next fiscal year and whether to move ahead with a $100 billion high speed rail system.

Lawmakers will also be considering when they reconvene whether to proceed with an $11 billion water bond measure, and how to overhaul the public employee pension system to reduce costs, a priority for Governor Jerry Brown.

Political insiders in Sacramento expect the usually fractious legislature to tackle its work, especially on the state budget, without its usual rancor. A Democratic majority in both houses of the legislature, along with new budgeting rules, means the budget can be passed without any Republican votes - as happened last year.

The legislature may also be able to move more quickly than usual because a critical fiscal issue - possible new taxes - will be left to the voter: Brown aims to put an initiative on the November ballot that would raise the state's sales tax and increase income taxes on those earning at least $250,000 a year.

Lawmakers won't want budget politics in particular to drag on because so many of them will be seeking reelection in newly drawn districts under a new primary system in which the top two candidates regardless of party face off in November.

"That just creates a tremendous amount of political uncertainty," said Mark Baldassare, president of the Public Policy Institute of California.

BYPASSING REPUBLICANS

Brown's tax initiative would sweep $7 billion a year into state coffers and provide the governor and fellow Democrats in the legislature a way to raise revenue without having to appeal to minority Republicans to support tax bills.

Brown's efforts last year to win over a handful of Republicans to gain the two-thirds majority needed for tax legislation failed, requiring a budget thick with spending cuts to close a deficit of about $10 billion.

The bitter, lengthy budget battles of recent years have largely resulted in relentless spending cuts to help keep the state's books balanced. Brown last month ordered another $1 billion in cuts in response to weaker-than-expected revenue. Schools, universities, social services and even the court system have all absorbed major cuts in state funding in recent years.

Most U.S. states have seen revenue tumble in recent years due to the weak economy. California's money troubles have been particularly acute because of its heavy reliance on personal income taxes. Turmoil in the financial markets, which tends to dent incomes at the high end of the scale, along with high unemployment have combined to slash income tax collections.

California's jobless rate fell to 11.3 percent in November from 12.5 percent a year earlier. Despite the improvement, the state's unemployment rate was considerably higher than November's national jobless rate of 8.6 percent.

The state anticipates $88.5 billion in general fund revenue for the current fiscal year, compared with $101.2 billion in 2007-2008, before the financial meltdown hit.

Brown must unveil a budget plan for the fiscal year beginning in July by January 10. He has already signaled his plan will cut deeper into spending. Democrats have said they would back the cuts in anticipation of a major push by Brown for his tax increase initiative.

Brown's budget plan will include revenues based on voters approving his initiative, along with provisions for further cuts if they reject it. Voter approval is by no means assured, particularly if there are, as expected, competing tax increase plans on the ballot.

Republicans are at risk of being largely on the sidelines until the fall election, with Brown and Democratic legislators working out the budget on their own.

"I don't think we're going to see a budget standoff," said Thad Kousser, political scientist at the University of California, San Diego.

The absence of a budget impasse would help stoke investor demand for California's bonds, which is already strengthening thanks to renewed interest in muni debt in general, said Craig Brothers, a strategist at Bel Air Investment Advisors in Los Angeles.

"If people want to put money to work, I think they feel most comfortable in the bigger, most liquid names" such as California, Brothers said. (Reporting by Jim Christie; Editing by Jonathan Weber, Gary Hill)
