Gamechanger iPad combines docking with board games, we go hands-on (video)

Well, is it really a game changer? Depends how you use the term. But this GameChanger remains a clever way of combining the often mundane world of dock charging with a low-fi board game. The device is already out and those children of yours would normally be pestering for the charming sum of $80. However, there's a holiday discount to $50 that'll extend through the rest of January, with the promise of refreshed content delivered through the iPad app. Several games now use the vanilla touchmat underneath the cardboard game outlays and they're generally a bit more fast-paced than the board game offerings. The makers also intend to extend the gaming offering while they roll out the device in more languages and territories. Our hands-on video is en route, until then, feel free to peruse the gallery below.

Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 full details leaked, 720p camera and new flight modes?

Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 full details leaked, 720p camera and new flight modes?
It was hard to miss the "2.0" branding over at Parrot's little aerodrome here at CES, but with nary a detail we were left speculation what the new major version number means. Now, though, we have some more details. A lot more details, actually. Over at AR Drone Flyers we've spotted what looks to be an official press release detailing everything about the new UAV, most notable being an improved 720p camera. You can apparently use this to record footage from the drone and even program it to fly in any direction automatically. In other words, this could be the low-cost aerial camera DIY extreme sports filmmakers have waited for. And, at $299 when it ships in Q2, it'll be quite close to affordable. You can check out a picture of the new drone above and read the full details in the seemingly official press release below.

[Thanks, Symon Davis]

Summary Box: Alcoa posts net loss on weak demand (AP)

BY THE NUMBERS: Alcoa Inc. reported a fourth-quarter loss of $191 million, or 18 cents a share. Revenue rose to $6 billion from $5.65 billion.

ECONOMIC WOES: Alcoa's revenue fell across a range of businesses because of a sluggish global economy. That led to a global surplus in aluminum and caused prices to fall more than 27 percent since their 2011 peak in April.

WHAT'S NEXT: Alcoa believes most of its customers' businesses will grow in 2012; including aircraft, automobiles and construction. It has forecast a 7 percent increase in global aluminum demand this year.

Japan to release 3 activists who boarded whaler (AP)

CANBERRA, Australia ? Japan has agreed to release without charge three Australian activists who boarded a Japanese vessel off southwest Australia as part of a campaign to stop whale hunting in Antarctic waters, Australia's attorney-general said Tuesday.

The three men boarded the security ship Shonan Maru No. 2 on Sunday as it tailed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's flagship the Steve Irwin.

Attorney-General Nicola Roxon the two governments were negotiating details for safely offloading the three men: Geoffrey Owen Tuxworth, 47, Simon Peterffy, 44, and Glen Pendlebury, 27. They are all from Western Australia state.

"We are pleased that the Japanese government has made a decision that these three men won't be charged and will be released," Roxon told Nine Network television on Tuesday.

"But we can't be confident that that will happen next time if people take action ? take the law into their own hands," she added.

Australian officials had spoken to the men and all were well, she said. Retrieving them posed challenges.

"Obviously the logistics are difficult when you are in open seas," Roxon said.

The three activists, who are members of an environmental group, said they were helping Sea Shepherd "end illegal whale poaching."

The whale hunts, which Japan says are for scientific purposes, are allowed by the International Whaling Commission as an exception to the 1986 ban on whaling. But opponents say they are a cover for commercial whaling because whale meat not used for study is sold for consumption in Japan.

Pete Bethune, a Sea Shepherd activist, boarded the same Japanese ship in 2010. Bethune, a New Zealander, spent five months in a Japanese jail before being convicted of an array of offenses and deported.

Sea Shepherd said the three activists reached the Japanese vessel ? a former harpoon boat that now performs a security role for the whaling fleet ? in two small boats and climbed over its rails.

They came with the message, "Return us to shore in Australia and then remove yourself from our waters," Sea Shepherd said.

The three activists are members of the environmental group Forest Rescue.

The Shonan Maru No. 2, which collided with the Sea Shepherd speed boat the Ady Gil in 2010, tailed the Steve Irwin as it escorted the anti-whaling vessel Brigitte Bardot to the Australian port of Fremantle last week for repairs. The Brigitte Bardot had been damaged by a rogue wave.

Japanese surveillance of Sea Shepherd vessels helps the fleet avoid the protesters as the whalers go about their annual hunt.

Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson, captain of the Steve Irwin, said the three activists had hoped to divert the Shonan Maru No. 2 off the Steve Irwin's tail as it searched for the whalers.

Space.com: Primordial Galaxy Cluster is Farthest Ever Seen

Hubble Spies Building Blocks of Most Distant Galaxy Cluster

Astronomers have discovered the most distant developing galaxy cluster known to date, shedding light on the formation of large-scale structure in the early universe, a new study reports.

Researchers used NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to find five tiny but bright galaxies clustered together 13.1 billion light-years from Earth. That means Hubble is observing them as they existed just 600 million years after the Big Bang, the dramatic event that brought our universe into existence.

"These galaxies formed during the earliest stages of galaxy assembly, when galaxies had just started to cluster together," Michele Trenti, of the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, said in a statement. "The result confirms our theoretical understanding of the buildup of galaxy clusters. And, Hubble is just powerful enough to find the first examples of them at this distance."

Trenti presented the results today (Jan. 10) at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Austin, Texas, the same day a different research team announced the discovery of "El Gordo," the largest galaxy cluster in the early universe. [See Hubble's photo of the faraway protocluster]

The study will also be published in an upcoming issue of The Astrophysical Journal.

A rare find

Hubble spotted the five galaxies while performing a random sky survey in near-infrared light.

The newfound galaxies are small, ranging from 10 percent to 50 percent the size of our own Milky Way. But they're about as bright as the Milky Way, because they're feasting on huge amounts of gas via mergers with other galaxies, researchers said.

Most galaxies reside in clusters or groups. Galaxy clusters are the largest structures in the universe, comprising hundreds or thousands of individual galaxies bound together by gravity. Hubble is seeing the five-galaxy protocluster as it existed 13.1 billion years ago; since then, it's probably grown to a size typical of its gigantic brethren, researchers said.

Hubble's new discovery offers a rare chance to observe ancient protoclusters, which are dim and widely scattered across the sky.

"We need to look in many different areas because the odds of finding something this rare are very small," said Trenti, who used Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) to pinpoint the protocluster. "The search is hit and miss. Typically, a region has nothing, but if we hit the right spot, we can find multiple galaxies."

Galactic buildup

The new find helps demonstrate that galaxies build up progressively over time, researchers said. It also provides further evidence for the hierarchical model of galaxy assembly, which posits that small objects merge to form bigger ones in a steady process of collision and accretion.

The fledgling cluster may consist of more than just the five bright galaxies Hubble spotted. The team suspects that many fainter galaxies may inhabit the same cosmic neighborhood, researchers said.

The scientists estimated the distance to the newfound protocluster based on their colors, but they plan to follow up with spectroscopic observations, which measure the expansion of space. Those measurements will help pin down the cluster's precise distance, researchers said.

Spectroscopic observations will also allow researchers to determine the galaxies' velocities, which should show whether they are gravitationally bound to each other.

Strong storms spin tornado, flood streets

Strong storms pounded the Houston area on Monday, flooding streets, spawning a tornado and dropping hail. Severe thunderstorm warnings, flash flood warnings and flood advisories remain issued for southeast Texas counties.Weather Alerts IssuedRadars | Radar Loop | Lightning Tracker "Whenever a thunderstorm is strong enough to produce hail, it's strong enough to produce a tornado. They almost go hand-in-hand" KPRC chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley said. "These heavy rains continue to push across Houston and into the east at 25 mph. Four inches of rain has been common south of Interstate 10. Although there's not much behind this system, we're going to continue to deal with this until 2 o'clock." By 1:30 p.m., the coastal areas and Galveston County began feeling the brunt of the storm. Fort Bend County was hit the hardest. Sugar Land recorded the most rain with 6.20 inches as of noon. Katy had 4.36 inches. Pearland logged 3.88 inches and Houston had 4.20 inches of rain. "We've got a lot of lightning with this system and that's also a big danger," KPRC meteorologist Anthony Yanez said. "There's a lot of heavy rain." A tornado touched down in Fort Bend County along FM 1093 and FM 723 shortly after 9:30 a.m. The Sheriff's Office said power lines and trees were down in the area. Beverly Moore heard the tornado approach her house on FM 723. "All the doors in the house were trying to open and shut. It sounded like a train going through, so we hid in the closet," she said. "It was definitely a tornado. We hid for about 15 minutes." "We've heard of roof damage in a neighborhood," said a spokesman with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office. "There's been quite a bit of flooding. There's been some hail but we haven't heard anything about injuries." Several homes in the Kingsbridge Place neighborhood in Fort Bend County were severely damaged by the storms. Bricks, wood and shingles were torn off houses and garage doors were twisted and bent. "I was actually sleeping when it all happened," one of the residents said. "All you hear is it starts raining harder and you can feel the wind pushing inside the house. Then the door flies open and the ceiling starts leaking." A neighbor said they did not know what was happening. "We thought it was like an earthquake or tornado," he said. "At my house, a piece of wood came through the wall. The wall didn't collapse, but a piece of wood came right through it. We're lucky to be alive." The Richmond Fire Department helped residents evacuate around Third Street as water crept into houses. "We've had reports of water in homes," said Alan Spears with the Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management. "We had some boat evacuations going on. A funnel cloud was spotted on Highway 99 shortly after 9 a.m., but there were no reports of it touching down. Afternoon pre-kindergarten classes were canceled for the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District. The floodwaters were receding in the area of Highway 6 and Bissonnet about 11 a.m., but it was still knee-high in the middle of some area streets. High water was reported on freeways across the city. There were at least 15 locations where water impeded freeway traffic at midday. The main lanes of state Highway 288 near Holly Hall were impassible and drivers tried to turn around in the median, but they did not get very far because the other side of the road was also flooded. Officials recommend drivers stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. "It only takes about 6 inches (of water) to knock a person over," said Michael Walter of the Houston Office of Emergency Management. "It only takes about 2 feet of water to wash away an SUV." Firefighters have had to rescue several people from flooded vehicles. "If you see water in front of you, just avoid it," Walter said. "Go a different way. The big thing is turn around, don't drown." CenterPoint Energy said approximately 16,000 customers were without power at noon due to the storm, mainly on the southwest and west-side. An upper-level low will move through the Houston-area the rest of the day. "We've got a stalled front and a lot of moisture coming in from the sub-tropical jet-stream. A pattern like this brings in a good amount of rain," Yanez said. Houston drivers dealt with slick streets for their early morning commute. "We had a wave of rain move through at about 1 to 2 a.m.," Yanez said. "It's going to be wet all day long, at least off and on. We're going to get a lot of rain out of this today, up to 5 inches in spots." Monday's high is forecast to be 68 degrees from noon until 3 p.m. Morning showers are also possible on Tuesday and Houstonians have a chilly week ahead. "Our next freeze could come in on Friday," Yanez said.
