Obama Applauds Bailout ???Success??? at Washington Auto Show (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Gracing the Washington Auto Show with his presence Tuesday, President Barack Obama hailed his administration's efforts in reigniting the U.S. auto industry, while at the same time railing against his political adversaries who were "willing to let the industry die." As the U.S. auto manufacturing industry continues to heal, Obama is employing the government bailout of General Motors and Chrysler as a campaigning tool to court the American electorate.

During his surprise visit to Washington's annual 2012 auto show, the President ooh'd and ah'd over several new electric and hybrid vehicles placed on display by Dodge, GM, and Ford. "Let me just say, when you look at all these cars, it is testimony to the outstanding work that's been done by workers -- American workers, American designers," Obama applauded. "The U.S. auto industry is back."

Naturally, for Obama, such praise does not go without criticism, as the President castigated his Republican foes for championing the death of America's auto industry. "It's good to remember the fact that there were some folks who were willing to let this industry die. Because of folks coming together, we are now back in a place where we can compete with any car company in the world," he affirmed. "And these are not only selling here in the United States, they also serve as a platform for us to sell product all around the world."

Both the Bush administration and the Obama administration faced an uncharted roadblock in fall of 2008 and early 2009, as the Big Three automakers lurched on the edge of fiscal collapse. In response, Bush forked out $17.4 billion in government loans, while enforcing government-mandated restructuring plans for GM and Chrysler.

President Obama echoed these efforts with billions of dollars more in taxpayer dollars, requiring concessions from stakeholders and enabling the companies to move forward with swift bankruptcies. White House advisers swayed the public that the federal aid, which totaled about $85 billion, was a critical strategy because absent government assistance GM and Chrysler would have been forced to liquidate.

In effect, the Obama campaign seeks to hawk the so-called "government rescue" of the U.S. auto industry as a victory for jobs and manufacturing, as White House spokespersons interminably tout job growth and economic rebirth. Of course, what the President and his army of staffers neglect to note is that American taxpayers still hold a multibillion-dollar bailout bill - and considering the government's lousy track record in public-to-private sector engineering, taxpayers ought to be very wary.

Reference Software Programs, The Answer To Nearly Any And ...

Reference software programs are programs that provide helpful information regarding a stated subject. There are numerous products in existence today, all designed by qualified companies looking to secure their share of the market through the quality of the product they sell.

The most suitable goods are ongoing works in progress, which on regular basis are kept current to keep up to speed with the quickly changing world in which we live. There are several products available from dictionaries to thesauruses, and from tax data to travel information. Something for every need.

One of the best-known and most respected online encyclopedias is Encarta, a product of Microsoft corp. Since it is updated on an annual basis, and for some users, these updates are available free of charge, it qualifies simply as a genius creation.

Considering Microsoft designed it, it works perfectly hand in glove with almost all of the other Microsoft applications such as Microsoft Office Word and PowerPoint. You may also use it on the Web for augmented information on any topic contained within the Encarta encyclopedia.

One of the most relevant markets for reference software programs is the foreign language arena. With our world getting more and more cosmopolitan day after day, and the global village expanding so quickly, the need to learn to speak several different languages has increased dramatically.

One of the most well known online language learning courses within the reference programme umbrella is the Rosetta Stone language learning program. It covers as many as 30 different world tongues from German to Japanese.

Another crucial niche within the reference programs coverage, is education. As well as getting help with things like arithmetic and physics, you may also fetch help with simpler education skills like computer training courses.

One particular software reference program called Learn2, which can be found at tutorials.com, has assorted courses on offer to help with an entire range of different programs including the Microsoft Office suite of programs and Lotus spreadsheets. There is a beginner?s course too for folk that have never employed a PC before in their lives.

The sector of travel doesn?t get overlooked either. It is easy to get help with route maps that explain and visualise any journey from A to B, virtually anywhere in the world. You may even access information on the hostels along the route if you'd like somewhere to stay overnight to wreck the journey; or how about if you want to stop to take in some famous sites on route. You can request this info in your travel plan too.

One of the most important software reference programs in this market is Microsoft?s Streets and Tips. Again, it?s a programme that is updated frequently so it carries the most recent traffic info, and news about road works.

Finally, there are the programs that may help with our good old buddies the IRS. Doing your own tax assessment is always a nightmare. The rules and allowances seem to change every year. With all this going on it just makes getting it right that much more comlex. Many people now have chosen to buy themselves reference software programs that encapsulate these changes and help with their calculations. It makes the whole process so easier.

Two of the best tax oriented reference programs are TurboTax, and TaxCut. Both aren?t only kept up to date with any changes in the guidelines, regulations, and allowances, but also guide you through the process of completing your yearly tax return step by step. Not only is it able to help you to get your tax code right, it saves you having to spend out your hard-earned income on employing a tax consultant

These are merely a few of the leading reference software programs that are generally available. From dictionaries, through to encyclopedias and particular learning programs, these new software programs provide essential help where and when we need it. So don?t struggle any more. If you need help with anything, there will be a programme just right for you. Seek and ye shall find.

Hot start: Dow and S&P have best January since '97 (AP)

NEW YORK ? It's the best start for stocks in 15 years.

In what was mostly a slow and steady climb, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 3.4 percent in January and the Standard & Poor's 500 gained 4.4 percent, the best performances for both indexes to open a year since 1997.

Investors were encouraged by modest but welcome improvement in the U.S. economy, including an 8.5 percent unemployment rate, the lowest in almost three years. Corporate profits didn't wow anyone ? except Apple's ? but they were good enough.

"I don't see anything really glamorous or tremendous about the economy or earnings," said Jerry Harris, chief investment strategist at the brokerage Sterne Agee. "But I think they're very acceptable, and things are grinding along."

An unexpected drop in consumer confidence dragged stocks down on the final day of the month. The Dow Jones industrial average finished down 20.81 points, or 0.2 percent, at 12,632.91.

The broader market fared better. The S&P barely finished in the red, declining 0.60 point to 1,312.41. The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.90 points to close at 2,813.84. The Nasdaq gained 8 percent for the month, its best January since 2001.

In January 1997, the last time stocks had such a fast start, the S&P gained 6.1 percent. Bill Clinton was inaugurated for his second term. An Asian financial crisis and "Titanic" lay ahead. Later that year, the Dow crossed 7,000 and 8,000 for the first time.

This January, analysts said, investors had such low expectations for the economy that it was easy for things to turn out better than expected.

"There are no big surprises," said Kim Caughey Forrest, a senior equity analyst at money manager Fort Capital Group. "That's the kind of ho-hum economy that we are in right now."

The Dow closed at 12,217.56 at the end of last year, then started this year with a pop ? a gain of 179.82 points on opening day. It was the kind of big swing investors became accustomed to in 2011.

Since then, it's been a quiet ascent: 19 days in a row of moves of less than 100 points. The last time the Dow had such a placid stretch was a 34-day run that started Dec. 3, 2010.

Scottrade, the online brokerage, said stock buyers outpaced sellers among its clients for the first 14 trading days of the year, Jan. 3 to Jan. 23. It also said volume was 16 percent higher than December's average.

For the month, the Dow added 415.35 points, its fourth straight month of gains and its largest January point gain.

On Tuesday, the Dow started up 66 points after encouraging signs from Europe that Greece might finally complete a deal to cut its crushing debt, a step toward securing a critical euro130 billion bailout payment.

Greece is negotiating with investors who bought its government bonds. They are expected to swap their bonds for new ones with half the face value, plus a lower interest rate and longer term of maturity.

Investors are increasingly worried that Portugal may need a similar deal with its private creditors. European leaders insist the Greek reduction is a one-time event. Portugal's borrowing costs have risen to record highs.

The Dow lost its gains after consumer confidence fell to 61.1 in January, down from 64.8 in December. Economists had expected 68. The Conference Board said Americans are more worried about their incomes, gas prices and business conditions.

There were also signs that the housing market continues to struggle. Home prices fell in November for a third straight month in in 19 of the 20 cities tracked by the S&P/Case-Shiller index. The biggest declines were in Atlanta, Chicago and Detroit.

In the commodities market, investors worried that the confidence figure was a sign of weaker demand to come, and they sold industrial metals that have prices closely tied to the economy.

Copper for March delivery dropped 3.65 cents to $3.79 per pound, and March palladium ended down $2.15 at $686.35 per ounce. April platinum fell $28.20 to $1,588.10 an ounce.

The metals ended the day down after wild swings. Traders bid up prices in morning trading, encouraged by news that European officials were making progress to contain the financial crisis there, then sold hard on the confidence number.

"This is a day that every trader takes Tums," said George Gero, vice president at RBC Global Futures.

Precious metal prices ended the day mixed. The price of gold rose, as it often does when it looks like the economy might shrink or the dollar might lose its value. Gold for April delivery gained $6 to finish at $1,740.40 an ounce.

In the bond market, the weak U.S. economic data and uncertainty about Greece lit up demand for safe investments. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield dipped to 1.795 percent, its lowest close in almost four months.

The yield on the five-year Treasury note hit a record low for the second straight day, falling to 0.70 percent.

Treasury yields have been falling since last week, when the Federal Reserve said it expected to hold interest rates near zero into late 2014, more than a year longer than its last estimate, because the economic recovery will need help.

In corporate news:

? RadioShack Corp. stock plummeted 30 percent after the company said its profit fell sharply ? 11 cents to 13 cents per share for the quarter that ended in December, down from 51 cents a year earlier and less than half what Wall Street was expecting.

? Best Buy Co. Inc., one of RadioShack's competitors, responded by falling 5.6 percent, worst in the S&P. Both companies sell and service cellphones, but demand has softened at their stores.

? Avery Dennison Corp., which makes labels and packaging materials, fell 5.6 percent after it said earnings plunged 81 percent on nearly flat sales. Its 2012 outlook was well below Wall Street expectations.

? Mattel Inc. soared 5 percent because of strong demand for Barbie and Monster High dolls during the holidays. That boosted Mattel's fourth-quarter profit by a better-than-expected 14 percent. The company also raised its dividend.

? U.S. Steel Corp. gained 5 percent after it reported strong demand for pipes from the oil industry from October through December. The company was also optimistic about this quarter.

? Agriculture conglomerate Archer Daniels Midland declined 3.6 percent after it reported an 89 percent drop in quarterly net income. The company said its results were weighed down by weakness in oilseeds, corn processing and agricultural services.

?We?re like wildebeests down here?: A Q&A with Miami Herald political reporter Marc Caputo (The Ticket)

Romney campaigning in Jacksonville, Fla., on Jan. 26, 2012. (Charles Dharapak/AP)

After enduring months of campaign speeches, debates and Herman Cain, voters in Florida finally get to cast their ballots in the Republican primary on Tuesday. With all eyes on the Sunshine State, Yahoo News spoke with Miami Herald political reporter Marc Caputo on the eve of the primary about the intensity of this election cycle, Newt Gingrich's startling comfort with the media, Mitt Romney's lack thereof, and what local political reporters like him do when the circus leaves town.

Yahoo News: What's different about covering the 2012 race than 2008 or previous races you've covered?

Caputo: What's different about the 2012 campaign compared to 2008 and 2004 is that it is much more volatile. Very much so. You're seeing that in the debates. In 2008, Mitt Romney, John McCain and [former New York Mayor Rudy] Giuliani came down here. Fla. Gov. Charlie Crist backed McCain the weekend before the primary, and Giuliani watched his campaign implode. Let's just say Herman Cain is no Charlie Crist--he'd probably take that as a compliment at this point.

In 2004, the race was far less contested. You had a popular president in George W. Bush, and Jeb Bush was the governor. There's no way he wasn't going to win here.

In Miami, do you get more access to the candidates that do show up there than reporters do in, say, Tampa or Orlando or other parts of the state?

It depends. When a candidate comes here, sure, they'll do the de rigueur visit to Cafe Versailles. But that doesn't necessarily mean you'll have access to them. The thing about Miami press corps is, they're incredibly aggressive. They'll knock you over. We're like wildebeests down here.

I was going to ask you, 'What does the national media not know about the Florida media?' Is that it?

That's probably it. I overheard an AP reporter covering the Romney campaign discussing that with someone this morning. They said, "in Miami they're crazy." I think that's probably something the national media covering the campaigns are discovering. On the whole, we do a lot more reporting on issues that transcend local, such as immigration. But the national media can get that just by reading us. I know that sounds like a shameless plug, but it's true.

Of all the candidates, who is the most comfortable with the media attention? The least?

Oh Newt Gingrich, no question. He's very comfortable in his own skin. He'd probably be just as comfortable with the media if you hit him with an axe. It's just something that he's become very good at. He'll answer any question you ask him. With Mitt Romney, it's very limited. He's just not that comfortable without a net.

If you had the opportunity to moderate one of the GOP debates, what would be the first question you'd ask?

"All of you have bashed ObamaCare's $500 billion in Medicare cuts, yet you support Republican plans that could cut or reduce the same amount from Medicare. Can you explain the apparent discrepancy and also describe how, as politicians, you allowed Medicare and Medicaid to grow--yet you're highly concerned about government intrusion in healthcare now?"

Of course, the debates have shown that, due to the strictures of TV and the influence of the crowd on some reporters, it's tough to ask follow-ups/interrupt talking points to get an answer.

In hindsight, did the media--local and national--spend too much time/pay too much attention to Herman Cain?

No. Herman Cain won the Republican Party of Florida's straw poll and became an instant frontrunner. His folks wanted and needed the attention. He apparently had skeletons in his closet, a poor campaign team and a penchant for shifting his story. All inevitably led to mega-media attention and, ultimately, his downfall.

What's the biggest mistake national reporters make when they cover Florida? Hit the beach too long?

I think they misunderstand Florida's Hispanic vote. It's not as Mexican as it is in, say, California or Texas. It's not as Puerto Rican as, say, New York. Still, Puerto Ricans are the second largest Latino group here behind Cubans. And, unlike most Hispanic groups, Cuban voters are overwhelmingly Republican. Because our largest Hispanic voting groups don't have the same immigration problems facing other Latinos--Cubans get asylum, Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens--the immigration debate can be more conservative with them. There are many, many other nuances in Florida many don't understand as well. Still, Florida reflects the nation, so it's not hard to report on for outsiders who can easily find parallels with the rest of the country.

What happens after the Florida primary for you, personally? Do you have a letdown? It would be natural.

I get to sleep. I've been living out of a suitcase for weeks. Looks like it's going to be a blowout, which isn't a great story, the long race the national media might've been hoping for. But for me, it means I get to take a few days off. I'll probably go down to Key West, which is where I'm from, visit some friends and do some fishing.
