Music School, White Plains. Exposing Kids to the Arts

Certainly, in many respects it's a better environment than many other local counties and towns, but there are drawbacks.

Of course, White Plains has an excellent cultural life, but it just doesn't compare with Manhattan, a mecca on Earth for all things creative. Music lessons for kids can help balance their lives. Music school isn't for every child, but if yours has expressed an interest in learning to play an instrument or sing, it's time you thought about music lessons.

That may be all your child knows - that he's bored by video games and the Internet - and he loves listening to music. You may have to take the initiative. Other kids know, from an early age, that they are interested in music. Even in places known for the arts, providing kids with music lessons can be one of the best ways of opening them up to a new world of musical genres, and a new feeling of achievement and mastery as they learn music.

What's involved? Learning music means learning a whole new notation system, sort of like a new alphabet. It involves keeping time. If it's a wind instrument or a vocalist, it involves using the lungs. Holding the instrument requires good posture, as does singing. Music lessons teach kids this, and a lot more. Kids learn to keep time and appreciate different rhythms.

They have the chance to learn how to produce a great, unique tone, a voice all their own. They get the freedom to express themselves, while learning one of the most difficult disciplines there is, involving many different simultaneous skills. There really aren't many other activities in a kid's suburban life that can challenge, exhilarate, and excite like learning music can.

Compared to everything else a kid can do in the suburbs, music lessons have a lot to offer. Even if you haven't had lessons yourself, that shouldn't stop you from considering taking your child to music school. Music schools in White Plains and other comparably sized cities and towns usually have experienced musicians teaching, and a child with aptitude, who practices, can excel and become a master.

And who knows, it may become a lucrative profession, providing enough for your son to work himself through college, or even become a professional in the music industry or pursue such a course of study at university. But the point is, without providing your child with the chance to learn music, you're really not giving him something that he may treasure for the rest of his life, whether he plays for fun, for profit, or not at all. He'll come away with a greater understanding of music, and as music is such a significant part of our popular culture, that can't be a bad thing.

U.S. to move Marines to Guam despite Futenma delay (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan and the United States said on Wednesday they have started talks to transfer U.S. Marines to Guam from the southern Japan island of Okinawa despite little progress being made on the planned relocation of a U.S. airbase on Okinawa, a step forward in an issue that has long been an irritant in bilateral ties.

A shift of U.S. Marines to the Pacific island of Guam had been dependent on progress in the relocation of the Futenma airbase within Okinawa. But Tokyo has struggled to win local consent to the relocation plan, threatening to stall the Marines' move out of Okinawa.

Japan and the United States agreed in 2006 to move 8,000 Marines to Guam and relocate the Futenma airbase in Ginowan city to a less populous area of Okinawa to ease the burden on local residents, who associate U.S. bases with noise, pollution and crime.

The two security allies said they are reviewing the number of U.S. troops moving to Guam, but the Marines' presence on Okinawa after the planned realignment would not change from what was planned in the 2006 agreement.

Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said last week that Okinawa will still host about 10,000 Marines after the planned transfer, compared with 18,000 Marines currently based on the island, strategically located near China, which has rapidly expanded and modernized its armed forces.

The move to expedite the transfer of U.S. forces in Okinawa comes at a time when the Pentagon is under pressure to cut spending, including costs associated with the Marines' move to Guam, and the United States is putting its security focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

Japanese newspapers said on Sunday that the United States was considering transferring 4,700 U.S. troops instead of 8,000, to Guam, and a smaller number of Marines to U.S. bases in countries such as the Philippines and Australia.

The two allies said on Wednesday they remain committed to the existing plan to relocate the Futenma facility from Ginowan to the Henoko area in central Okinawa's Nago city.

VatorNews - Looking for love through the tangled interwebs

?

Modern-day matchmaking involves a lot more personality algorithms and pithy profile answers than little black dresses and pick-up lines.

With more than 100 million singles floating around the U.S. looking for someone to share Valentine's Day with, there is a huge market for helping people find their match.

Online dating sites have been around, in some capacity, since the early 90s but the field has taken off as a lucrative way to build an online community that logs in often. While it is nearly impossible to determine how many dating sites there are on the Internet, especially since so many pop up over night and close shop when they realize how few people want to pay for additional services, analysts average that 25 million to 30 million people use some form of online dating in the U.S.

And dating services are estimated as a market worth $2.14 billion in 2011 that forecasted to grow 4.7% per year to $2.54 billion by 2015, according to a study released this week by Marketdata Enterprises.

That's a big market, all taking what individual friends and matchmakers were doing on a local level and putting it online with the help of personality-matching formulas and the virtual shopping experience. I mean who wouldn't want to fill their basket with prospects as long as the return shipping isn't going to bankrupt you.

Last year, Match.com banked $480 million, eHarmony brought in $270 million, and FriendFinder Networks made $233 million from advertising, fees and other services.

For many year there had been a strong stigma surrounding online dating -- equating it to a seedier version of Penny Saver personals -- but now that everyone communicates, shops and learns from the Internet, the stigma has lessened greatly.

In fact, estimates show that in the next three years, a majority of people will have met a mate for an online forum such as a dating site.

Matchmakers a-plenty

But when it comes to finding an online dating site that works for you, there are so many options to sift through. You have the big recognizable brands such as Harmony, Match.com and Chemistry.com that have grown over the years to become the names in cyber connections -- but now there are so many niche sites that capitalize on a common interest that means a lot to the people involved.

From boating or guns to horseback riding or travel, these specific sites have popped up to help organize people by a major passion in their lives. Now, you may have heard about dating sites for aging baby boomers such as Boomer Cupid, Baby Boomer Passions, and Senior Match or sites for people looking for a mate that shares their religious beliefs such as J-Date, Christian Mingle or Salaam Love, but there are some sites that lean toward micro-niche specifics.

Have you heard about a dating sites that cater only to iPhone users, virgins, Harvard grads, sugar daddies or World of Warcraft fans? In fact, I challenge you to think of a common interest that doesn't at least have a forum for dating on the Web.?

So in the spirit of preparing for Valentine's Day I thought I would introduce those singles out there to what a wide world of dating communities are waiting for them. In the very least, the stuff you find is great fodder for a Tumblr -- I recommend checking out one of my favorite dating blogs: It's Not OK, OkCupid where Esquire editors include little gems found on and messaged to people using dating sites.

?

10 sites you should know exist:

DateCraft: Gamers are a fun, passionate group and some of the most dedicated are the World of Warcraft players. Datecraft is a way for those that proudly where the title "gamer" to meet others that share the very same interest.? The site's mission is to create a simple, fun, and engaging site which assists a relationships between gamers and video game enthusiasts. You don't have to be a World of Warcraft fans, specifically, but I'm sure you can find plenty of playmates on this site, whatever your game.

SugarDaddie: For younger women looking for successful men that like buying gifts and taking their mates on trips, SugarDaddie has built a site where the common interest is a luxurious lifestyle. Founded in 2002 by Steve Pasternack, SugarDaddie strays away from the freemium model and charges $29.99 per month for males and $24.99 for females and has more than 10,000 users.?

Pasternack told me that the world of niche and micro-niche sites helps people filter the expanses of the Internet to get some of the must-have elements in a mate right off the bat.

"When people turn to the Internet for finding a mate, they really want to be totally honest about what they want and there shouldn't be any problem with that," Pasternack told me. Pasternack is also starting a few other dating sites such as Meetattheairport.com and 7orbetter.com.

Geek2Geek: The time has passed that geek is a bad label -- we are all putting geeks in commercials and watching them bank billions on dorm-room creations so why not organize a dating forum to connect those brains. Geek2Geek has reorganized its personality algorithms to specifically cater to the geek ideals so that people can choose the top three criteria that matters to them in a partner. So whether you are online chatting in your favorite forum or coding your next project, why not meet someone else to head off to the next be conference or convention with.

Surf Date: The outlook on life for surfers is just different. I mean what other sport could you enjoy so much just by scoping out the playing field -- I've never enjoyed looking at a tennis court the way I have checking out the wave conditions. Surf date helps connect surfers that want a dawn patrol paddling buddy or someone to take a surfing trip to Bali with. The site has 447,000+ members and has hundreds of new people joining daily.

Cupidtino: We all have a friend (or many) that are very passionate about their iPhones. It seems to be as much of a characteristic of a person as leisure activities or the school they went to and now there is a dating site for iPhone and Apple product lovers. Available only on the web or iPhone application, Cupidtino is focused on helping people with iPhones meet one another wherever they are.

Kintan Brahmbhatt, advisor to the young company, spoke to me about how the phone a person uses really says more about their personality.

"People that don't just own but are passionate about their iPhone and Apple products usually ascribe to a particular aesthetic," Brahmbhatt told me. "They tend to be in a younger age bracket with creative tendencies and have a higher level of tech interests than the general public."The service is free but fees are attached to sending messages in the application ($4.79 per month -- the same price as a vent latte). The service now has more than 32,000 users and with more than 110 million iPhones circulating out there, the market growth could be substantial if enough people think their choice of phone is a factor in who they want to date.?

StachePassions: This social networking and online dating site specifically for singles with a passion for the mustached (men, I am assuming). From the Dali to the Walrus or even the Pencil, people can group the style of stache that they prefer. Hilariously enough, the site also organizes the users by their experience in mustache culture (who knew) from Newbie to Expert or Stache Groupie. Hey, the hairy need love too.

Yoga Passions: Yoga Passions is a free social networking site of the namaste variety. Whether you are are a beginner or a trained yogi, this platform offers a place to have Yoga chats, read personals and share expertise.?

Alikewise: You can always tell a lot about a person by just sneaking a peek at their bookshelf. But now that many people are meeting online and converting to virtual bookshelves, finding a partner based on their reading list might be a logical next step. Alikewise allows you to find people based on their book tastes, either specifically based on book titles or on subject matter.

DateHarvardSq.com: While some people are interested in meeting college-educated partner, others are more specific in the type of education they want in a mate. DateHarvardSq connects users with Harvard University educated doctors, lawyers, businesspeople, academics and professionals. Founded in 2010, DateHarvardSq is owned and operated by a team of dedicated Harvard University graduates. Interested singles are asked to pay a subscription fee only after they choose to contact a match that they are interested in.

EntrepreneurDate.com: Starting your own company can be extremely time consuming and, from my experience is fairly homogenous, so finding a date can be a challenge. EntrepreneurDate is a member of a larger dating brand called TangoWire, which has more than 50 online dating communities. This site helps to connect different innovators and inventors with its free service.? Maybe even sparking some relationship and business partnerships.

?

?FYI: I did find one interest with no such dating site dedicated: taxidermy enthusiasts. Now that I've put that factoid out there, its your move Internet.

Judge dismisses suit accusing SeaWorld of enslaving whales (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? A federal judge on Wednesday threw out an animal rights group's lawsuit accusing SeaWorld of enslaving captive killer whales, ruling that orcas had no standing to seek the same constitutional rights as people.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, had accused the chain of aquatic theme parks of violating the rights of whales under the 13th Amendent of the U.S. Constitution, which abolished slavery in the United States.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in San Diego, listed five performing orcas at SeaWorld's parks in California and Florida - Tilikum, Katina, Corky, Kasatka and Ulises - as plaintiffs in the complaint.

"The only reasonable interpretation of the 13th Amendment's plain language is that it applies to persons, and not to non-persons such as orcas," U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller wrote in his ruling.

"Both historic and contemporary sources reveal that the term 'slavery' and 'involuntary servitude' refer only to persons," the judge added.

The 13th Amendment was enacted in 1865, the year the U.S. Civil War ended.

Legal experts previously denounced as frivolous the PETA lawsuit, which had sought a court order requiring SeaWorld to release the five killer whales to a "suitable habitat."

David Steinberg, a professor at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, told Reuters when the lawsuit was filed in October that it was "demeaning (to) the integrity and humanity of people who were owned as slaves."

Virginia-based PETA has staked out a number of controversial positions in the past, in seeking to advance the cause of animal rights.

In 2003, the Anti-Defamation League accused PETA of trivializing the deaths of Jews in World War Two with a campaign that compared the meat industry to the Holocaust.

Colleen O'Brien, a spokeswoman for PETA, said in a statement that her organization would regroup as a result of the dismissal of what it called "this historic first case" on behalf of orcas.

"Today's decision does not change the fact that the orcas who once lived naturally wild and free, are today kept as slaves by SeaWorld," O'Brien said.

Miller said in his ruling that animals did have legal rights under state and federal statutes, including criminal laws.

He added the "goal" of PETA attorneys who brought the lawsuit "to protect the welfare of orcas is laudable," even if the 13th Amendment was not the correct way to approach the case.

Cardinal Edward Egan Just Withdrew His ... - Business Insider

?

AP

St. John Chrysostom, once said?"The road to hell is paved with the skulls of bishops."

Here's proof that he was right.?

In an interview this week with Connecticut Magazine, Cardinal Edward Egan, withdrew his 2002 apology for the Church's handling of the sex-abuse scandal, which was once read in all New York parishes.?

A decade after that letter, the former archbishop of New York, and former bishop of Bridgeport, now describes the handling of the priest-abuse crisis under his watch as??incredibly good.? He said of the letter, "I never should have said that,??and added, ?I don?t think we did anything wrong.?

?I never had one of these sex abuse cases.? he said, before adding pompously, ?If you have another bishop in the United States who has the record I have, I?d be happy to know who he is.? He also claimed that the Church had no obligation to report abuse to the civil authorities.?

These are lies, strutting around with pride.?

The Church is required to report abuse, according to laws on the books since the 1970s.?

Bishop Egan ran a diocese that was notoriously dangerous for children. Contrary to his claim, during his twelve-year enthronement at Bridgeport, Egan repeatedly failed to investigate priests where there were obvious signs of abuse, according to The Hartford Courant. His diocese had to settle the cases and awarded victims some $12-15 million in damages.?

Here is just one incredible case of negligence. According to the Hartford Courant,?in 1990, Egan received a memo about?"a developing pattern of accusations? that Rev. Charles Carr of Norwalk had fondled young boys. Egan kept Carr working for another five years, only suspending him after a lawsuit was filed, and then in 1999 making him a chaplain at Danbury's hospital.?

How about another? The Connecticut Post?also reported that early in his reign,?dozens of people came forward to accuse Rev. Raymond Pcolka of Greenwich of sexual abuse and violence against children. Egan claimed that the accusers were never "proved" to be telling the truth. Well, Egan never even bothered to interview them and kept Pcolka in ministry.?

And, speaking as a Catholic, who lived in the New York Archdiocese under Cardinal Egan's reign, I can say Egan did punish some priests. But not child-abusers. He swiftly punished and evicted those Catholic priests that said the Traditional Latin Mass (later liberalized by Pope Benedict XVI), if he thought they didn't pay him sufficient deference.?

In short: Egan coddled child-abusers, and persecuted decent priests during his ignominious reign as a Prince of the Church. His entire interview reeks of a narcissism and self-regard that is so palpable it makes your eyes water.?

Again, speaking as a Catholic, God is merciful with those who repent and do penance.?

It is time for Egan to repent before his victims and before God.

Otherwise, he'll end up as pavement.?

C.H. Tong, President of VTech Telecommunications Ltd, commented: ?Communications are increasingly done over IP, and our goal is to exceed user expectations with our VoIP telephony products, providing clear and reliable communications solutions. White House Defends Contraception Rules as Criticism Mounts ...

Catholic Obama

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Obama administration is willing to work with Catholic universities, hospitals and other church-affiliated employers to implement a new policy that requires health insurers to offer birth control coverage, a top adviser to the president?s re-election campaign said on Tuesday.

David Axelrod, a senior campaign adviser to President Barack Obama, said the administration had heard the Roman Catholic Church?s concerns and never intended to ?abridge anyone?s religious freedom.?

But he gave no sign that the administration would reverse course under intensifying pressure from church leaders and political heat from Republican presidential candidates.

?This is an important issue. It?s important for millions of women across this country. We want to resolve it in an appropriate way, and we?re going to do that,? Axelrod said in remarks on MSNBC?s ?Morning Joe? program.

White House spokesman Jay Carney also sought to diffuse criticism from church leaders, telling reporters later on Tuesday the administration would work with religious organizations ?to see if the implementation of the policy can be done in a way that allays some of those concerns.?

U.S. Catholic bishops have slammed the Obama administration for a regulation finalized on January 20 that would require health insurance to include birth control and other preventative health services for women. The leaders contend the policy infringes on religious liberty because the church does not condone birth control of any kind.

Over the weekend, Catholic clergy across the country called for congregations to pressure Obama to back down.

?To force American citizens to choose between violating their consciences and forgoing their healthcare is literally unconscionable,? said Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, in a statement last month.

Jim Towey, president of Ave Maria University in Florida, who also served in the administration of President George W. Bush, said on Tuesday he would fight the provision using ?all lawful means at our disposal.?

?Our non-Catholic employees and students understand fully that the University must adhere to Catholic teaching and they do not expect us to provide such services,? he said in a statement.
