Santorum's embarrassing 'Google problem' no longer No. 1

19 hrs.

Rick Santorum's infamous?"Google problem," which began eight years ago after the-then Pennsylvania senator angered equal rights activists by equating gay marriage to the legal union between a man and a dog, may be subsiding.?

Spreading Santorum -- the website that redefines "santorum" as the very graphic byproduct of a specific sex act, is no longer the No. 1 result for Google searches on Santorum's name,?reports Danny Sullivan, SearchEngineLand's longtime chronicler of all things Santorum.

In fact, the original Spreading Santorum website isn't even in Google's first page of results -- though you will find a link to the less graphic blog that uses the same name.

Launched by Dan Savage following?Santorum's offending interview with the Associated Press, Spreading Santorum quickly became the top search return via savvy search engine optimization (SEO) techniques and a network of links created by like-minded protesters of the politician. Eventually, SpreadingSantorum.com became the top search result on Bing, Yahoo and Chinese search engine Baidu.

In the past, Google refused appeals from Santorum's representatives to remove SpreadingSantorum.com from the top search result for his name. Unlike pranks such as Google bombs (where jokesters create a large number of fatuous links to return an unrelated result) which Google will actively thwart, the site features content about Santorum (including the new definition of his last name), and as such does not qualify as Google bomb.?

(You may remember the "George Bush" Google bomb that returned "Miserable failure" as the top result -- Google eventually tweaked its algorithm to return more relevant results ? eventually, anyway.)

As SearchEngineLand cites, here's how Matt Cutts ? a Google software engineer who was involved with the change ? explained the difference awhile back:

?santorum? isn?t a Google bomb, it?s straight SEO. Here?s the difference. With a Googlebomb, you?re causing someone else?s site to rank. With SEO, you?re promoting your own site. So spreadingsantorum.com is promoting themselves for ?santorum,? which is SEO?.

So why is Spreading Santorum no longer No. 1? Sullivan provides Google's (apparently ongoing) statement on the topic,?which he does his best to decode here:?

Postscript: Google has sent this statement:

"We make more than 500 changes to our algorithms in a typical year, and with each of those changes sites will shuffle to different positions in our search results. We have not manually taken action to change the ranking of the site."

Postscript 2: Google tells me this is related to its improved SafeSearch algorithm, one of the other changes that was just announced. There?s no explanation yet about about why Spreading Santorum got hit while the Urban Dictionary page did not.

Postscript 3: Google says that the change even impacts results if you have SafeSearch set to off. In other words, even if you turn SafeSearch off ? and should get no adult content filtered out ? adult content may still be filtered out. That?s pretty weird.

Meanwhile, as Sullivan points out, the NSFW definition for "santorum" remains No. 1 at Bing, Yahoo and Baidu ? but for how long? How long?!?

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about the Internet. Tell her to get a real job on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.?Because that's how she rolls.

Channel 36's owner plans to lay off 63 - Toledo Blade

The parent company of WUPW-TV, Channel 36 intends to lay off 63 employees as part of the station's pending $22 million sale. LIN Media, the owner of WUPW, filed a layoff notice Tuesday with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The company was required to do so under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The layoffs are slated for sometime between April 24 and May 8, according to the notice. The layoffs will become official if and when the Federal Communications Commission approves the sale of WUPW to American Spirit Media and the sale is completed. The paperwork doesn't say how many people are employed at WUPW or if everyone at the station could lose their jobs. Employment information isn't included in station reports to the FCC. FCC Deals a Blow to Dish Network's Network Plans (Phone Scoop)

The Federal Communications Commission denied to grant Dish Network a preliminary waiver which would have allowed it to move forward with plans to build its own wireless network. Instead, the FCC decided to conduct a formal investigation into Dish's request, a process which could take until the end of the year. Dish wants to do something similar to what LightSquared tried to do: Use traditional satellite spectrum to create a terrestrial wireless broadband network. The FCC granted Dish approval to purchase $3 billion worth of spectrum, but said that a "rulemaking process will best serve the public interest and maximize the long-term value of the spectrum for the American economy." Dish is still hopeful that it will eventually win FCC approval, though the delay is a significant one.

Have the FCC Remove Rush Limbaugh From the Radio

I just signed a petition to : Petition the FCC the remove Mr. Limbaugh from the radio as he has violated FCC rules and regulations countless times. The most recent incident being his assault on women and his degradation of Susan Fluke. At best it can be said that he has used hateful, negative, and even racist and sexist remarks toward people that do not stand with his views or with him on issues of any sort, social or political. This is the following definition of Obscenity, Indecency and Profanity and is on the FCC website. It is clear the Mr. Limbaugh has before, and currently is violating these rules and regulations. Let's get him removed form the radio! It?s Against the Law It is a violation of federal law to air obscene programming at any time. It is also a violation of federal law to air indecent programming or profane language during certain hours. Congress has given the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the responsibility for administratively enforcing these laws. The FCC

FCC mulls whether police should be able to black out cellphones - The Hill's Hillicon Valley

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a request on Friday for public comment on whether government agencies should be allowed to block access to cellphone networks. The request stems from an incident last summer when a San Francisco transit agency shut off the transmitters that allow for cellphone reception in four underground subway stations to disrupt a planned protest over a police shooting.

Kids flex cultural muscles

Preschoolers demonstrate humankind?s social-learning prowess

Web edition : 2:53 pm

Preschool kids angling for a reward display social skills that may, on a grander scale, turn human cultures into cauldrons of change and innovation.

Groups of 3- to 4-year-olds, but not clusters of chimpanzees or capuchin monkeys, solved progressively more complex tasks in a puzzle box by employing three key social strategies, say zoologist Rachel Kendal of Durham University in England and her colleagues. First, children who solved a task taught struggling peers what to do. Second, kids often copied what others did. And finally, task solvers frequently shared stickers they received as rewards with kids who hadn?t yet earned stickers.?

This package of social behaviors characterized four- or five-person groups in which at least two kids solved a three-stage puzzle and most of the rest reached stage two, Kendal?s team reports in the March 2 Science. Chimps and capuchins in groups of eight to 32 rarely got beyond stage one of the same puzzle, the researchers say. No evidence of teaching or sharing of food rewards appeared in these primates. Chimps copied others at the first stage but not at higher stages.

?The stark contrast in skills supporting cultural ability between children and both chimps and capuchins was surprising,? Kendal says. Her study is the first to use the same task to explore social learning in different species.

Previous studies of children?s problem-solving in groups have similarly focused on teaching, imitation and sharing, remarks anthropologist Joseph Henrich of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. These behaviors critically enable human cultures to make rapid advances in knowledge and technology, he says. Further research needs to untangle precisely how this process works, Henrich adds.

Children?s puzzle-box successes may reflect other human mental specialties, such as reasoning with language and inferring others? intentions, suggest psychologist Robert Kurzban of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and anthropologist H. Clark Barrett of the University of California, Los Angeles, in a commentary published in the same issue of Science.

In Kendal?s study, participants reached chutes containing stickers or food first by moving a sliding door to the left or right, then by pushing either of two buttons to move the door further in the same direction, and finally by turning a dial using one of two colored holes, releasing the door to slide still further.

After 30 hours, only one chimp mastered the puzzle box, but the strategies didn?t spread. After 53 hours, no capuchins cracked all three tasks, and only two solved two tasks.

After 2.5 hours, five of eight kids? groups contained at least two individuals who had conquered the puzzle box, with most remaining kids in those groups solving two tasks.

Filing for Bankruptcy ? Tips and Advice | solutionfinder.org.uk

A person who has overwhelming debts should try debt consolidation before filing for bankruptcy. Consolidating bad debts with the help of a debt consolidation company will alleviate one from having to deal with debt collection agencies and create a plan whereby one can pay back a portion of what is owed. Typically, a person only has to pay back between 15% and 25% of the original debt; the rest is written off by the creditors under the debt consolidation agreement. However, debt consolidation is not always feasible and in such an instance, declaring bankruptcy is the best option.

While a person filing bankruptcy can do so without professional legal help, hiring a bankruptcy attorney is always a good idea. The attorney does not need to be the most expensive attorney in town, but he or she should be competent and experienced. If the reason for declaring bankruptcy stems from the fact that alimony has not been paid, then consulting a divorce lawyer may also be a good idea.

The first thing that a bankruptcy attorney will do is determine whether one should file for Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy. The attorney will then help one to fill out the necessary legal paperwork; a good attorney will also help a client to prepare for the court mediated meeting that will inevitably follow. This meeting is important, as a persons creditors and their lawyers will also be present. The court appointed mediator will ask one questions regarding his or her assets and will determine which ones can be kept and which ones must be sold to repay creditors.

Bankruptcy proceedings are relatively straightforward is creditors do not make formal objections. On the other hand, one or more creditors can request that a person declaring bankruptcy still be required to pay off some or all bad debts. In such an instance, the case will go to court and a judge will determine if a person should be released from the debts under bankruptcy or not.

A person declaring bankruptcy should realise that some debts will never be discharged under any form of bankruptcy. A person will need to pay any back taxes or legal fines that he or she owes, even if bankruptcy has been declared. A person who uses his or her credit card irresponsibly right before or right after declaring bankruptcy may still be required to pay the money that he or she owes. Student loans are very difficult to discharge under bankruptcy, although it can be done.

Bankruptcy is not the only way to deal with financial insolvency, but it is a good option and one that should be seriously considered. Debt consolidation is often the best initial option, but not always. In many cases, declaring personal bankruptcy is the best course of action. Anyone declaring personal bankruptcy should start by finding and retaining a good bankruptcy lawyer to help him or her successfully declare bankruptcy and discharge all debts under these proceedings.

New indicator diseases reveal hidden HIV

Today, heterosexuals in Europe are at particular risk of carrying HIV for so long that they remain undiagnosed until their immune system starts to fail and they become ill. An international study under the leadership of the HIV in Europe initiative has now revealed that a number of diseases, including herpes zoster and certain forms of cancer, should be on the list of indicators for having HIV - and thus serve to prompt health care professionals to suggest an HIV-test to their patients. The new results and guidelines are to be debated at a major international HIV conference in Copenhagen on 19th-20th March.

"At the HIV in Europe conference we will be discussing how to disseminate knowledge of the new HIV indicator diseases to non-HIV doctors and health care professionals across Europe," says Jens Lundgren, Co-chair of the HIV in Europe initiative.

He's also a Professor of Viral Diseases at Rigshospitalet and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, where he heads the Copenhagen HIV Programme, one of the leading HIV/AIDS centres in the world.

Too many HIV-infected individuals are remain undiagnosed

Half of all people living with HIV are diagnosed very late in the course of their chronic HIV infection. People infected through heterosexual transmission now comprise 42 per cent of these late presenters, as a study of 90,000 Europeans tested HIV positive since 2.000 shows.

UNAIDS has estimated that 2,5 million Europeans carry an HIV infection, and as many as 900 000 of these, are still unaware of this. Inside EU the numbers are 800.000 infected with 250.000 undiagnosed.

Ton Coenen, co-chair of the HIV in Europe initiative, Director of Aids Funds and Soa AIDS Nederland suggests that since the HIV/AIDS issue is no longer high on the agenda in many European countries, and since people have to actively choose to be HIV-tested, many perhaps no longer consider going for a test if they have had unsafe sex.

However, the sooner HIV-infected individuals receive a diagnosis and start therapy, the greater are their chances of survival and their quality of life. And new research also shows therapy lowers the risk of passing the infection on to someone else.

"The currently situation shows that we need more effective testing strategies and guidelines," Ton Coenen continues. "More than 300 doctors, health care professionals, NGOs and health politicians from 40 European countries will be discussing this need at the conference on 19th and 20th of March, so we have the ideal forum for it."

Eight new HIV-defining diseases should warrant and HIV-test

"We already have a list of Aids defining diseases, the vast majority of which indicate a weak immune system. This is a symptom of HIV and should lead to an immediate HIV test," Professor Lundgren explains. "We nned to find people living with HIV sooner than is currently the case, but to do so requires that doctors and other health care professionals offer tests to people presenting with diseases indicative of a hidden and undiagnosed HIV infection earlier in the course of the disease."

The HIV in Europe initiative took up this challenge in 2009 and started the HIDES study (HIV Indicator Diseases Across Europe), which investigated eight new diseases and how often they proved to be signs of an undiagnosed HIV infection among the 3588 patients in the study.

"We could see that if an adult had a sexually transmitted infection, malignant lymphoma, cervical or anal cancer/dysplasia, herpes zoster, hepatitis B or C, ongoing mononucleosis-like illness, inexplicable, persistent decline in the number of circulating white blood cells, or seborrheic dermatitis/exanthema, the risk of HIV infection was so high that it would be cost-effectiveness for society to routinely offer them a test," Professor Lundgren says. He also emphasises that the new indicator diseases do not necessarily mean that the patient has HIV.

"But the incidence of HIV is greater for these eight indicator diseases and they should encourage health care professionals to offer the patient an HIV test. Draft guidelines on how to ensure this throughout Europe are one of the topics we need to debate and decide on, before they can be implemented."

Corporate Censorship Reborn: PayPal Bans Erotic Fiction

sexyboxThe independent book world has been beset on all sides recently. When the first e-publishers began to go to bat for independent and self-published authors, the writing world rejoiced. For too long the rapacious vanity press had taken their money and offered little in return. There is very little up-front investment for self-published authors except for a good story and a little HTML gumption and Amazon, PayPal, and Barnes & Noble (and Apple) made it easy to publish anything, any time. The market was the critic and the writer reveled in the spoils. Then things changed. Most recently Seth Godin bumped up against Apple's publishing guidelines when he added links to Amazon books that Apple does not sell inside his self-published e-book. There can be arguments on either side for Godin's position that the contents of his books are his and his alone to control. However, another brewing scandal points to outright censorship.
