College Textbook Prices Increasing Faster Than Tuition And Inflation

College textbook prices have increased faster than tuition, health care costs and housing prices, all of which have risen faster than inflation.

College textbook prices are 812 percent higher than they were a little more than three decades ago, the American Enterprise Institute, a think tank, reports. Textbook costs have well outpaced the 559 percent increase in tuition and fees over roughly the same period.

college textbooks prices

"The 812 percent increase in the price of college textbooks since 1978 makes the run-up in house prices and housing bubble (and subsequent crash) in the 2000s seem rather inconsequential," writes University of Michigan economics professor Mark J. Perry at the AEIdeas blog, "and the nine-fold increase in textbook prices also dwarfs the increase in the cost of medical services over the last three decades."

The National Association of College Stores (NACS) says the average college student will spend $655 on textbooks each year, but with a single textbook easily costing as much as $300, that total can easily be much higher. In fact, the College Board puts the annual cost of books and materials at $1,168. Students at for-profit colleges tend to spend even more.

Roughly one-fifth of a textbook's price goes to the store where it is sold to cover personnel and operating costs, while more than three-quarters goes straight to the publisher, according to a recent article from U.S. News & World Report. The magazine broke down textbok publishing costs:

NACS no longer receives information from publishers about where textbook money goes, but as recently as 2008, they provided that cost breakdown. At that time, around 15.4 cents of every dollar went toward marketing the textbooks, 11.7 cents went to the authors, and the largest chunk?32.2 cents?went to the basics: paper, printing, and paying publishers' employees.

According to the Government Accountability Office, publishers often include supplemental materials such as CD-ROMs and access to websites, which drive up the sticker price for textbooks.

Other moves by the textbook industry, such as issuing new editions, also drive up the cost according to a 2011 survey from the U.S. Public Interest Research Group. New editions are released on average every 3.9 years, but a 2008 report from the California state auditor found many college deans, department chairs and faculty members admitted revisions to textbooks are often minimal and not always warranted.

U.S. PIRG found a majority of students admit to not purchasing at least one textbook required for their classes because the price is too high.

All is not lost, though, AEI's Perry notes. New, cheaper ways to deliver materials may crush the textbook industry the same way Wikipedia killed the encyclopedia, he writes:

Just like the ongoing home price increases and housing bubble of the last decade were unsustainable, there is now growing evidence that rising college textbook prices and the ?college textbook bubble? are also unsustainable, especially because of the growing number of low-priced and even free alternatives to over-priced $200-300 college textbooks. The textbook alternatives are part of the growing ?open educational resources? movement, which is ?terrifying? the college textbook cartel.

Lynchburg, Va. (PRWEB) December 21, 2012

With the absence of more than 12,000 residential students for winter break, much of Liberty Universitys dining and recreational offerings will be closed for the holidays, but there are still opportunities to get a taste of excitement or enjoy family fun on campus.

Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, the only year-round snowless ski slope of its kind in North America, will continue to offer skiing, snowboarding, and tubing during holiday hours: Monday through Friday noon to 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-10 p.m., and Sunday 2 p.m.10 p.m., with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For those who prefer to get extreme indoors, the Liberty Mountain Skate Park located in the Candlers Station shopping center, will have the same hours.

The LaHaye Ice Center will be open for ice skating Dec. 26 from noon-5 p.m.; Dec. 27, noon-3:30 p.m.; Dec. 28-29, noon-3 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m.; and Dec. 30, 1-3 p.m.

Sports fans are able to catch the Flames mens basketball team in action at home Dec. 21 and 28. Liberty hosts the Milligan Buffaloes in the first matchup and Union College to close out 2012 play in the Vines Center. Both games tipoff at 7 p.m.

Campus will look as alive and energetic as ever Dec. 30-31 as students are invited to ring in the New Year at Winterfest. Participants can jam to live tunes from some of todays hottest Christian artists, including TobyMac, Red, and Casting Crowns. The event also features dynamic Christian speakers to challenge students in their faith. Winterfest exposes guests to all that campus has to offer, including its exciting recreational activities like indoor soccer, rock climbing, ice skating, and extreme winter sports at the Snowflex Centre.

CES 2013 Preview: Less Electronics, More Cars | MIT Technology ...

The annual Consumer Electronics Show, known as CES, begins in Las Vegas next week. As usual, it promises to be an orgy of crowded conference centers and frenzied PR activity combined with some interesting new technology announcements. MIT Technology Review will be posting news from Vegas next week, but we can also make some predictions now about we?re likely to see.

My guess is that next week will yield many new TVs and laptops but none of the biggest new tech releases of 2013. This is largely because some of the largest players in computing and mobile have largely?withdrawn from the show.

Microsoft walked away from the headline keynote of CES in 2012, after 15 years of anchoring the show (see ?Three Gems Hidden in Microsoft?s Boring Keynote?). Apple hasn?t had a presence on the show floor for years, and Amazon and Google have never had much of one. Part of the reason is that these influential companies want more control. Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, and Google are all large enough to stage their own events. At the same time, gadget and computer releases have crept up the news bulletins to become mainstream headlines. (It?s worth noting, however, that senior figures from all those companies still attend CES, to take the opportunity to meet face to face with others from the industry.)

One company bucking this trend is Samsung, the world?s largest mobile-phone manufacturer, which will have a major presence at CES. Last year, the company used the show to launch its Galaxy Note ?phablet? (see ?Review: Galaxy Note?).

Although some have predicted that CES could soon disappear altogether, plenty of technology companies still need the show, and it?s not just the small companies pushing curiosities such as window-cleaning robots or a computer mouse in the shape of a car (see ?The Other Side of CES?).

Car companies have been increasing their presence at CES for several years as they seek to integrate more computing into their vehicles to better tempt a new generation of consumers (see ?At Gadget Show, Mercedes Announces Plans to Pursue Generation Y?). This year, Lexus has taken one of the few slots on the press preview day, promising updates on Toyota?s research on autonomous cars. Ford and Audi, meanwhile, are also holding press events, and I wouldn?t be surprised for an automaker to be giving next year?s headline keynote.

There should also be some interesting hints of the future in Las Vegas next week.?One of the most interesting things about attending CES is taking a chance to roam the exhibition floor to get an impression of what novel ideas are being made possible by smaller companies that typically sell or license their technology to larger ones. Last year I found a crop of practical-looking wearable displays (see ?A Preview of Tomorrow?s Wearable Computers?)?technology that is likely to be adopted by companies trying to compete with Google Glass in coming years (see ?You Will Want Google Goggles?). I?m expecting more wearable computing technology this year, as well as other ideas that hint at what?s coming next.

TMobile Monthly4G plans poised to get unlimited data tier on January 9th

The perpetual gotcha for T-Mobile's Monthly4G prepaid service has been the absence of truly unlimited data -- you could have one advantage or the other, but not both. TmoNews understands that this either/or choice is fading away after spotting what looks to be leaked promo material. Come January 9th, the carrier is reportedly replacing its 5GB Monthly4G tier with an unlimited alternative. The same $70 should net the previous unlimited talk and text, but skip the pesky throttling for very frequent users. As long as customers have good coverage, it's hard to see a downside for them if this proves real; next week can't come soon enough.

U.S. troops arrive in Turkey to man Patriot missiles

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? U.S. troops have started to arrive in Turkey to man Patriot missiles meant to protect the NATO ally from potential Syrian warheads, the U.S. military said Friday.

The United States, Germany and the Netherlands are each deploying two batteries of the U.S.-built defense system to boost ally Turkey's air defenses against any spillover from Syria's nearly 2-year civil war. The Patriot systems are expected to become operational later this month.

The Stuttgart, Germany-based U.S. European Command said in a statement that U.S. personnel and equipment had started arriving at Turkey's southern Incirlik Air Base. Some 400 personnel and equipment from the U.S. military's Fort Sill, Oklahoma-based 3rd Battalion were to be airlifted to Turkey over the coming days, while additional equipment was expected to reach Turkey by sea later in January, the Command said.

NATO endorsed Turkey's request for the Patriots on Nov. 30 after several Syrian shells landed on Turkish territory.

Last month, NATO said the Syrian military has continued to fire Scud-type missiles, although none had hit Turkish territory, and said the alliance was justified in deploying the anti-missile systems in Turkey. Ankara is supporting the Syrian opposition and rebels and is providing shelter to Syrian refugees.

More than 1,000 American, German and Dutch troops are to be based in Turkey to operate the batteries. NATO said the Americans will be based at Gaziantep, 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Syria. The Germans will be based at Kahramanmaras, located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of the Syrian border; the Dutch at Adana, about 100 kilometers (66 miles) west of the border.

Navy Vice Adm. Charles Martoglio, the Command's deputy chief, reiterated that the Patriots' deployment is for defensive purposes only and would not support a no-fly zone "or any offensive operation," in Syria, according to the Command's statement.

"Turkey is an important NATO ally and we welcome the opportunity to support the Turkish government's request in accordance with the NATO standing defense plan," it quoted Martoglio as saying.

Syria is reported to have an array of artillery rockets, as well as medium-range missiles ? some capable of carrying chemical warheads. These include Soviet-built SS-21 Scarabs and Scud-B missiles, originally designed to deliver nuclear warheads.

Last month, a top military commander from Iran ? a key Syrian ally ? warned Turkey against stationing the NATO systems on its territory, saying such a move risks conflict with Syria.

Pakistani girl shot by Taliban leaves UK hospital

LONDON (AP) ? Three months after she was shot in the head for daring to say girls should be able to get an education, a 15-year-old Pakistani hugged her nurses and smiled as she walked out of a Birmingham hospital.

Malala Yousufzai waved to a guard and smiled shyly as she cautiously strode down the hospital corridor talking to nurses in images released Friday by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

"She is quite well and happy on returning home ? as we all are," Malala's father, Ziauddin, told The Associated Press.

Malala, who was released Thursday, will live with her parents and two brothers in Britain while she continues to receive treatment. She will be admitted again in the next month for another round of surgery to rebuild her skull.

Experts have been optimistic that Malala, who was airlifted from Pakistan in October to receive specialized medical care, has a good chance of recovery because the brains of teenagers are still growing and can better adapt to trauma.

"Malala is a strong young woman and has worked hard with the people caring for her to make excellent progress in her recovery," said Dr. Dave Rosser, the medical director for University Hospitals Birmingham. "Following discussions with Malala and her medical team, we decided that she would benefit from being at home with her parents and two brothers."

The Taliban targeted Malala because of her relentless objection to the group's regressive interpretation of Islam that limits girls' access to education. She was shot while returning home from school in Pakistan's scenic Swat Valley on Oct. 9.

Her case won worldwide recognition, and the teen became a symbol for the struggle for women's rights in Pakistan. In an indication of her reach, she made the shortlist for Time magazine's "Person of the Year" for 2012.

The militants have threatened to target Malala again because they say she promotes "Western thinking," but a security assessment in Britain concluded the risk was low in releasing her to her family. British police have provided security for her at the hospital, but West Midlands Police refused to comment on any security precautions for Malala or her family going forward.

Pakistani doctors removed a bullet that entered her head and traveled toward her spine before Malala's family decided to send her to Britain for specialized treatment. Pakistan is paying.

Pakistan also appointed Malala's father as its education attache in Birmingham for at least three years, meaning Malala is likely to remain in Britain for some time.

Hospital authorities say Malala can read and speak, but cited patient confidentiality when asked whether she is well enough to continue her education in Britain.

While little has been made public about Malala's medical condition, younger brains recover more fully from trauma because they are still growing. Dr. Anders Cohen, chief of neurosurgery at the Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York, estimated she might recover up to 85 percent of the cognitive ability she had before ? more than enough to be functional.

"She'd be able to move on with life, maybe even become an activist again," said Cohen, who is not involved in Malala's treatment.

In the Swat Valley, people reacted with joy at the news of her release. Family and friends handed out sweets to neighbors in Malala's hometown of Mingora.

"Obviously we all are jubilant over her rapid recovery, and we hope that she will soon fully recover and would return back to her home town at an appropriate time," said Mahmoodul Hasan, Malala's 35-year-old cousin. Like Malala's father, he runs a private school in Mingora.

But the Swat Valley remains a tense place. Only last month, several hundred students in Mingora protested plans to have their school named after Malala, saying it would make the institution a target for the Taliban.

Malala's father vowed to return to Pakistan with his family once Malala is fully recovered.

"I thank the whole of Pakistan and all other well-wishers for praying for her and our family," he said. "What I am doing here is all temporary, and God willing we all will return to our homeland."

___

Zada reported from Mingora, Pakistan. Associated Press writers Rebecca Santana in Islamabad and Sylvia Hui in London also contributed to this story.
